This Mortal Coil was a dream pop supergroup led by Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of the British record label 4AD. Although Watts-Russell and John Fryer were technically the only two official members, the band's recorded output featured a large rotating cast of supporting artists, many who were signed to, or otherwise associated with, 4AD. About half of the songs released were cover songs, often of 1960s and 1970s psychedelic and folk acts, which displayed those two genres' place in the history and formation of dream pop.

Turtle Island String Quartet introduced the eclectic approach to repertoire that would become the group’s trademark. On Metropolis, its second CD, released in 1989, the quartet explored that repertoire further, presenting arrangements of pop-jazz works by Pat Methany, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, and John Coltrane alongside its own, original compositions. The album also gave the Turtle Islanders the opportunity to demonstrate their well-honed improvisational skills. Indeed, Metropolis’s rise to the Top 20 on the jazz charts is a tribute to the group’s musical prowess.

The Turtle Island String Quartet was born in 1985 and derived its name from creation mythology found in Native American Folklore. The quartet fuses the classical quartet aesthetic with contemporary American musical styles, which include folk, bluegrass, swing, be-bop, funk, R&B, rock, hip-hop, as well as music of Latin America and India. They have appeared on a dozen recordings on labels such as Windham Hill, Chandos, Koch and Telarc, soundtracks for major motion pictures, TV and radio credits, and collaborations with famed artists such as clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera, Manhattan Transfer, The, pianists Billy Taylor and Kenny Barron, the Ying Quartet and the Parsons Dance Company. This is its first CD.

This isn’t crossover; it’s meeting in the middle. The Turtle Island String Quartet has long specialized in not specializing; the group plays (mostly) original or new music inspired by a variety of non-classical American traditions, particularly jazz. The Ying Quartet, on the other hand, is a strictly classical group, although it’s well known for its innovative outreach programs.

A wonderfully moody album from Abbey Lincoln -one that's a bit more laidback than some of her other efforts, but no less soulful! There's kind of a broken, jagged sound to the record, a late nite vibe that's blue and melancholy, and which gets some great support from the tenor sax of Archie Shepp -which often gets a chance to solo on most tracks! The rhythms are gentle, often a bit spare, and handled by Hilton Ruiz on piano, Jack Gregg on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums -and the set also features work from trumpeter Roy Burroughs.

Tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp was an essential voice in the revolutionary jazz of the 1960s, creating a music that insistently linked art and social issues. He was also a musician who fused the past and present in jazz, leapfrogging over bebop to develop a sound that combined the expressive breathiness of Ben Webster with the new vocabulary of free jazz. Those qualities are much in evidence in these 1965 sessions.

Larry Coryell - Monk, Trane, Miles & Me
MP3 | 320Kbps | 117 Mb | 1999 | Covers | RS
Jazz, Instrumental

Larry Coryell was one of the first and, depending on your point of view, one of the best/worst fusion guitarists in jazz history. He's done some truly exciting, breakthrough work with Gary Burton, Philip Catherine, Carla Bley and John McLaughlin, and some then-trendy stabs at funk that are best forgotten. With this CD, Coryell gets back to his jazz roots. By covering tunes by the greats (many of which have become jazz standards) Coryell pays homage to the jazz legends that helped shape his musical conception.
