Daniel Roth - Louis Vierne: Complete Organ Symphonies Vol.1
2005 | Classical, Instumental | eac wv cue log covers | 368MB
Aeolus / SACD AE-10451

Louis Vierne was the last of the great romantic organist-composers which flourished in France in the late 19th/ early 20th Century. In 1894 and Widor named him as his assistant at the church of Saint-Sulpice. On 21st May 1900, Vierne won the competition for organist of Notre-Dame in Paris in front of an eminent jury. He held the post until his death some thirty seven years later. The organ symphony can be traced back to both Franck and Widor who themselves, as well as Vierne, were inspired by the infinite possibilities afforded by the symphonic instruments that Aristide Cavaillй-Coll had built in the second half of the 19th Century in the Trocadйro Hall and the great churches of Paris...

The Idea
Drummer Ian Wallace conceived the idea for the CJ3 while on tour with the 21st Century Schizoid Band. “I had so much fun playing these songs again, especially live where there was much improvisation. I thought it might be a cool idea to rearrange some of Crimson material in a jazz format.”
In early 2004, while living in Nashville, Ian met Jody Nardone on a gig with jazz singer Annie Sellick. After the show, he discovered that Jody was huge King Crimson fan. They discussed Ian’s idea and later got together to work on arrangements.
Later that year, Ian moved back to Los Angeles to work on “The Ten Commandments” musical. Tim Landers, also a big King Crimson fan, was the bass player on the show. They discussed the idea and Tim signed on to record the project and play bass. ....

Johannes Brahms: Organ Works - Anne Horsch
2008 | Classical, Instumental | eac wv cue log covers | 275MB
CPO / SACD 777 384-2

Anne Horsch plays the complete Brahms organ works on a Maerz instrument from 1887, quite a rare German late Romantic organ which began life in Munich's Odeon, a concert hall where Brahms, Schumann, Mahler and Rheinberger performed. It was moved to St Rupert's Catholic Church in the city during 1905, and later received some extra ranks. After a period of neglect it was restored at the end of the C20th to its 1907 condition.
Brahms, as part of his life-long scholarship in the field of music history, became very familiar with the organ in the early stages of his career when playing his beloved JS Bach. At the same time he met the Schumanns. In 1885 he also engaged in counterpoint studies with the great teacher and violinist Joseph Joachim. During this period a number of organ works were composed, of which only a small group have survived to be published posthumously (Chorale Prelude & Fugue on "O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid" WoO. 7, Prelude & Fugue WoO. 9 & 10, Fugue WoO. 8). Robert Schumann died in 1856, and Brahms wrote "O Traurigkeit" for his funeral....

Snowy White - Goldtop - Groups & Sessions '74-'94
1995 | Prog/Blues/Rock | eac wv cue log covers | 525MB

...British-born blues/rock guitarist Snowy White first became interested in music at age 11, when he heard urban blues performers like B.B. King, Otis Rush, and Buddy Guy, and was inspired to create his own clean, hard-edged style of British blues.
After moving to London in the early '70s, White spent the decade forging his sound and playing with like-minded artists such as Pink Floyd, Peter Green, and Thin Lizzy. In 1979 Thin Lizzy asked White to join them as a full-time band member; he did, touring and recording Chinatown and The Renegade with them.
In pursuit of different musical directions, White left Thin Lizzy in 1982. Joined by drummer Richard Bailey, bassist Kuma Harada, and keyboardist Godfrey Wang, he recorded his solo debut White Flames. Its single "Bird of Paradise" became an international hit, reaching number three on the U.K. charts.
Not content to be known as a singles artist, White rethought his approach to music. After deciding to focus on his guitar playing, he formed a touring blues band in 1986 with Harada, drummer Jeff Allen, and vocalist/guitarist Graham Bell. For three years the band toured and recorded, releasing Change My Life and Open for Business.
In 1990, however, White's old friend Roger Waters offered him a supporting slot in his epic Berlin performance of The Wall. White performed a memorable solo during "Comfortably Numb" atop the 80-foot high Berlin Wall, alongside other guest artists like Van Morrison and Bryan Adams. Waters also called on White the following year to play with him at the Guitar Legends concert in Seville.
At this point, White decided to re-enter the music mainstream, and recorded songs he had collected over the past few years. The result was 1993's Highway to the Sun, his second solo album, featuring guests like David Gilmour, Chris Rea, and Gary Moore. His next album, Goldtop, was a retrospective piece, covering White's work from the early '70s to the '90s....

R. Wagner - Der Ring - An Organ Transcription - Hansjorg Albrecht
2006 | Classical, Instumental | eac wv cue log covers | 280MB
OEHMS / SACD OC 612

These are not the first Wagner transcriptions for pipe organ, but the disc has several exclusive points in its favor: The organ is the largest French symphonic organ in Germany, and can be played simultaneously with a choir organ in the same space. The St. Nikolai space has excellent acoustics, and this is the first recording of such music in 5.1 multichannel. It is also the first such recording in which overdubbing was used to get an even more full orchestral effect that would have been possible in one pass. A number of separate recordings of sections using various registrations and voicings were placed on top of one another in the computer in a technique similar to that often used in pop music production but not normally used in classical. The production's engineer compares the extreme density of the score thus achieved to equal five organists at five consoles playing ten pipe organs...

J. Rheinberger: Music For Violin & Organ - Elena Denisova - Szygmunt Strzep
1998 | Classical, Instumental | eac wv cue log covers | 310MB
Arte Nova / 74321 58965

The name of Joseph Rheinberger (1839-1901) is well known to all classical organists, but outside of that his fame drops off sharply. Music trivia addicts love to point him out as "the greatest composer of Liechtenstein" – which he was. More importantly, he was one of the most revered music pedagogues of his time (Furtwängler and Humperdinck were among his pupils). His own music was highly acknowledged by his contemporaries, and this disc represents a real rediscovery of some rarely performed works. Elena Denisova counts among the most prominent personalities of the Russian violin elite today. The press and public confirm her high musical maturity, absolutely individual interpretation, and a superior virtuosity. Szygmunt W. Strzep, who was born in 1962, is representative of the young Polish generation of organists..

Olivier Messiaen
Jennifer Bate
Organ of St. Pierre de Beauvais Cathedral

Jennifer enjoys the unique reputation as a world authority on the French composer, Olivier Messiaen, and was his organist of choice. In 1975, upon hearing Jennifer Bate perform a program of his works, Olivier Messiaen wrote the following recommendation about Jennifer Bate. "...is an excellent organist,
not only for her virtuosity, but also for her musicianship and sensitivity in choosing her timbres. She is a really accomplished musician who loves what she plays and knows how to make others love it too!" This marked the beginning of a close artistic association and friendship between the two.

Stockmeier Wolfgang

At first, I regarded Stockmeier's recordings as pedestrian, but altered my opinion after listening to some of the works. Some of the music is so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. Definitely a creditable performance. My only criticism is that the music notes are in German only.

Editorial Reviews
2 CD edition. History rocked and rock made history during a sold-out three-gig stand at Madison Square Garden in late February 2008 when icons Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood performed a concert together for the first time since their all-too-brief days in the legendary Blind Faith in 1969. Whether they will ever team again is unknown. But with Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood Live From Madison Square Garden, fans everywhere are able to experience the sound and the glory of a performance on that famous stage by two of rock's greatest artists.

ARTS' celebrated "Organ History" offers in the sixt volume of the series an exciting journey through the music for organ composed by russian musicians during nineteenth and twentieth century. Most part of these compositions have never been recorded, as usual in this series, showing unknown aspects of well known musicians such as Glinka, Taneyev, Khachaturian, Shostakovich and others. Following the success of the latest volume dedicated to America (47272) and the next volume that will be dedicated to England, this is an exciting issue, not to be missed by every lover of organ music.
Arturo Sacchetti is the offical organist of Vatican City.
- unexpected and quite unknown russian repertoire
- mostly never recorded before
- sixth volume of a long term recording project dedicated to organ music

Wolfgang Baumgratz on the Schnitger Organ in Grasberg
J. Caspar Ferdinand Fischer: Ariadne Musica

...There are two main reasons for buying this disc. One is the music itself, which, although not particularly well-known, is, in fact, one of the milestones of early 18th century organ music: its 20 preludes and fugues and 5 ricercars (which are basically also fugues) were written using the "new-fangled" system of unequal temperament as theoretically supported by Werckmeister and others, enabling Fischer to work through no less than 20 keys (missing five of our modern keys, but adding Phrygian E). The work is generally accepted as being the inspiration behind Bach's "Das wohltemperierte Clavier", and in the notes, some parallels are pointed out.
The second reason for wanting to hear this is its capturing of the sound of an Arp Schnitger organ - one which has been badly ravaged by history, it must be admitted, but which, at the time of the recording, had just been newly restored according to Arp Schnitger's original plans. (Arp Schnitger was North Germany's most famous 17th century organ builder; this organ was originally built for the Hamburg orphanage, but was moved to the village of Grasberg near Bremen at the beginning of the 19th century).
The analogue sound is good without being spectacular. The playing time of a mere 41 minutes leaves a little to be desired. The booklet contains copious notes including a specification of the organ, but no list of the registers used by Wolfgang Baumgratz.

Organ Music - Vierne - Mulet - Reubke: Anne Horsch
2002 | Classical, Instumental | eac wv cue log covers | 315MB
Arte Nova / 74321-91430

Louis Vierne (1870-1937)
Henri Mulet (1878-1967)
Julius Reubke (1834-1867)
Anne Horsch on the Van Den Heuvel Organ of St Eustache, Paris
