Labour and the Challenges of Globalization

Andreas Bieler, Ingemar Lindberg, Devan Pillay, «Labour and the Challenges of Globalization»
Pluto Press | ISBN: 0745327575 | 2008 | PDF | 352 pages | 1.5 MB

This book critically examines the responses of the working classes of the world to the challenges posed by the neoliberal restructuring of the global economy. Neoliberal globalisation, the book argues, has created new forms of polarisation in the world. A renewal of working class internationalism must address the situation of both the more privileged segments of the working class and the more impoverished ones. The study identifies new or renewed labour responses among formalised core workers as well as those on the periphery, including street-traders, homeworkers and other 'informal sector' workers. The book contains ten country studies, including India, China, South Korea, Japan, Germany, Sweden, Canada, South Africa, Argentina and Brazil. It argues that workers and trade unions, through intensive collaboration with other social forces across the world, can challenge the logic of neoliberal globalization.

Global Expansion: Britain and its Empire, 1870-1914

Willie Thompson, «Global Expansion: Britain and its Empire, 1870-1914»
Pluto Press | ISBN: 0745312403 | 2000 | PDF | 160 pages | 1.33 MB

In this clear and concise reassessment of British imperialism, Willie Thompson examines the underlying social, economic and political forces that facilitated expansion during the key period of 1870–1914. Relating colonial expansion to both domestic politics and international relations, Professor Thompson identifies the shifts in world economic and political relationships, especially the challenge from an emergent German Reich, as the driving forces behind the fresh burst of expansionist energy during the period. He considers in detail the relations with the British state and various types of colony, from the semi-autonomous settlement colonies to wholly subordinated African territories and semi-colonies such as China and the Ottoman Empire. The impact of imperial ideology on British society and culture, both official and popular, and on political perceptions is explored, as is the structure of international relations and tensions generated by this phase of imperialism. This is the first short text to bring together the various dimensions of late–nineteenth-century imperialism – not just colonial expansion – and view them within the context of a broader post–seventeenth-century imperial development.

The Recurrent Crisis in Corporate Governance

Paul MacAvoy, Ira Millstein, «The Recurrent Crisis in Corporate Governance»
Palgrave Macmillan | ISBN: 1403916667 | 2004 | PDF | 160 pages | 2.46 MB

In the late 1990s the American corporation forged ahead in gains in efficiency and earnings performance with strong reflections in stock price appreciation. However, the events of Enron and the bursting of the bubble of unlimited increases in the price of Internet, telecom and energy company shares have caused the authors of this book to take another look at American corporate governance. The authors use a scholar-practitioner approach to show what is missing in today's corporate governance and to support a case for activating the board of directors, with leadership from an independent chair, to put new controls on management and take responsibility for the result.

Global Intellectual Property Rights

Peter Drahos, Ruth Mayne, «Global Intellectual Property Rights: Knowledge, Access and Development»
Palgrave Macmillan | ISBN: 0333990277 | 2002 | PDF | 288 pages | 1.3 MB

Intellectual property rights such as patents can reduce access to knowledge in genetics, health, agriculture, education, and information technology, particularly for people in developing countries. Global Intellectual Property Rights shows how the new global rules of intellectual property have been the product of the strategic behavior of multinationals, rather than democratic dialogue. The final section of the book suggests strategies aimed at developing more flexible standard for poor countries, and for keeping knowledge in the intellectual commons.

Freedom Fighters

Prima Temp, «Freedom Fighters»
Prima Games | ISBN: 0761542884 | 2003 | PDF | 96 pages | 8.75 MB

Freedom Fighters is a game of tactical combat, or what some like to refer as a thinking shooter. Unlike most shooter games, which send a player through an essentially linear course, killing everything in sight, or others that require the player to find special keys or cards to get through a locked door, Freedom Fighters lets the player concentrate on tactics as well as strategy. For nearly every mission, there is more than one way of completing the objectives.

Computational Physics: Fortran Version

Dawn C. Meredith, «Computational Physics: Fortran Version»
Perseus Books | ISBN: 0201127792 | 1990 | PDF | 651 pages | 43.16 MB

Computational Physics is designed to provide direct experience in the computer modeling of physical systems. Its scope includes the essential numerical techniques needed to "do physics" on a computer. Each of these is developed heuristically in the text, with the aid of simple mathematical illustrations. However, the real value of the book is in the eight Examples and Projects, where the reader is guided in applying these techniques to substantial problems in classical, quantum, or statistical mechanics. These problems have been chosen to enrich the standard physics curriculum at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level. The book will also be useful to physicists, engineers, and chemists interested in computer modeling and numerical techniques. Although the user-friendly and fully documented programs are written in FORTRAN, a casual familiarity with any other high-level language, such as BASIC, PASCAL, or C, is sufficient. The codes in BASIC and FORTRAN are available on the web at http://www.computationalphysics.info (Please follow the link at the bottom of the page). They are available in zip format, which can be expanded on UNIX, Window, and Mac systems with the proper software. The codes are suitable for use (with minor changes) on any machine with a FORTRAN-77 compatible compiler or BASIC compiler. The FORTRAN graphics codes are available as well. However, as they were originally written to run on the VAX, major modifications must be made to make them run on other machines.
