Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, como oficial de la RFA, fue instructor de radar en la aviación británica y tuvo a su cargo el primer equipo de radar talk-down, the Ground Controlled Approach, durante las pruebas experimentales. Su única novela que no es de ciencia ficción, Glide Path, se basa en este trabajo.
