Nineteen ninety-four marks forty years for Jimmy Smith on the Hammond organ. Although he made the switch from the piano in 1953, Jimmy did not really find his voice on the organ until the following year. Woodshedding took place in the warehouse where he and his father worked as plasterers. Jimmy recalls: “I got my organ from a loan shark had it shipped to the warehouse. I stayed in that warehouse, I would say, six months to a year. I would do just like the guys do – take my lunch, then I'd go and set down at this beast. Nobody showed my anything, man, so I had to fiddle around with my stops”.

This release is in memory of an outstanding musician who passed away too soon. Victor Assis Brasil, the legendary young Brazilian saxophonist. Born in 1945 and brother of classical pianist João Carlos Assis Brasil, he conquered the world in Brazil, Europe and the USA with his unique talent on the saxophone. He studied at Berklee and when back in Brazil he recorded albums, participated on various projects, and taught improvisation at the Conservatório Brasileiro de Música in Rio de Janeiro. He passed away at age 35 in 1981. More here.

Jean-Baptiste "Django" Reinhardt (1910 - 1953), who was born the town of Liberchies near Charleroi in Belgium on January 23,1910, was truly a 'self-taught' musician. He started out on the violin and guitar playing gypsy music and at an early age performed in dance halls as part of the gypsy troupe. More here.

A unique record congregating 2 great names of Brazilian popular music: Gilberto Gil & Jorge Ben
Gilberto Gil & Jorge Ben - Ogum Xango
"Recorded with little rehearsal and only two acoustic guitars (plus a percussionist) for accompaniment, Gil e Jorge focuses squarely on the individual talents of Gilberto Gil and Jorge Ben as musicians, vocalists, performers, and improvisers. Of course, they prove up to the task. The nine lengthy tracks on the album (it was originally configured as a double LP) feature Gil and Ben interacting to a high degree, trading lines and often repeating them several times. The best tracks here -- "Nega," "Taj Mahal," and "Meu Glorioso Sao Cristovao" -- are highly rhythmic and have the heft of ancient Brazilian folksongs. Unfortunately, there isn't another record in Gil's discography even remotely close to it" - John Bush, All Music Guide
