Shem tov levy ensemble new release "Stations" is a sequell to "Circle of dreams" soundtrack" released in 2001. This Ethnic-Jazz-Prog album is at least as charming, melodic and musical as it's predecessor. Very good players, smart arrangements, Great performances.

The saturday night concert in the Theatre Antique featured a fantastic double bill of Avishai Cohen playing unusually for him in a duet with pianist Shai Maestro.

The theatre was unsurprisingly sold out (7,500+) and the atmosphere was electric. Cohen and Maestro played a beautiful set taken from Cohen's latest album 'Gently Disturbed' and the often boisterous crowd were completely drawn into this compelling haunting music. Cohen showed flashes of his more lively playing techniques but this set was all about melody, content and the superb understanding that Cohen and Maestro have.

International collective Third World Love drops its fourth release in the form of New Blues, and it's a refreshing take on the trend of incorporating a global outlook into the stream of African-American music. The band members—featuring 3 Israeli expatriates and a bona-fide New Yorker—have all absorbed the blues language and applied it to various planet-spanning ethnic styles, referencing swing, Dixieland and post-bop as well as flamenco, salsa, samba, klezmer and various Middle Eastern strains. The album is truly a collaborative band effort, as each member contributes compositions and co-production credits, with tasteful instrumental chops to match.

A celebration of life flows through Sketch of Tel Aviv. Third World Love, based in New York, is a quartet of three Israeli-born players (trumpeter Avishai Cohen, bassist Omer Avital, pianist Yonatan Avishai) and a New York native, drummer Daniel Freedman. Since their debut, Third World Love Songs (Fresh Sound World Jazz, 2002), their music has been labeled world fusion, embracing ideas from the Middle East, Africa and American jazz. Each musician is active as either a leader of his own band or a sideman in various music endeavors. But together as Third World Love, they have created something special.

Wordless jazz with a message? Actually, yes. Avishai Cohen, an Israeli bassist and bandleader, has the kind of chops that have allowed him to play with the likes of Roy Hargrove, Leon Parker, Joshua Redman and Wynton Marsalis before being snagged as a permanent member of Chick Corea's band. Just one of the fascinating things about this album is the fact that Cohen isn't playing bass. He leaves that in the capable hands of Yagil Baras. For Unity, Cohen returns to his first instrument, the piano, which he learned to play as a teenager in Israel. Perhaps four years of watching Corea at work has had an effect on Cohen, or maybe he was extremely good on piano to begin with. Either way, he performs with the wisdom of an old piano vet, caressing the keys when subtlety is in order, riding them furiously when need be. A lot of understanding developed quite quickly when you consider that Cohen is just 31 years old and has spent most of his time and energy on the bass.

The first time I saw a CD on the "Fresh Sound – New Talent" label, I couldn’t help but wonder if the music made by this new talent was indeed fresh sounding. So far, so good: I have 5 CDs on FSNT (including the two reviewed here – and check the archive for my review of the Jimmy Weinstein – Matt Renzi trio’s Lines and Ballads disc) and each has either introduced me to (at least!) one very fine musician whom I was hitherto unaware of. Better yet, each of these releases has quite a bit to offer musically. It seems that the young artists on FSNT are dedicated to forging their own sound, instead of winning easy acclaim by appropriating classic jazz styles of the '50s and '60s.

Avishai Cohen first came to the public eye as a member of Chick Corea's band, where he soon established himself as one of the most dynamic and technically gifted double bassists around.

His interest in rock, ethnic and dance musics has worked against him slightly in the past, resulting in a string of albums that were impressive if a little unfocussed; a little bit too 'kitchen sink' in their approach.
Continuo bucks that trend. Working with usual cohorts Sam Barsh and Mark Guiliana (piano and drums respectively), Cohen keeps things simple, only embelleshing the basic trio with Amos Hoffman's fleet-fingered oud. This adds a touch of exotica to what otherwise sounds remarkably like EST on steroids.

That is why Danilo Perez was able to bring the music of Thelonious Monk into his own world and create a very personal testament to the ongoing mixtures of rhythm and feeling that define the story of jazz.

Blue Note does it again. Another superb release that is jazz, but also much, much more. It’s jazz re-defined in a unique context, venturing into unknown realms. Thanks to Blue Note, the very term “jazz” has been stretched further than we used to yank the arms of Elastic Man, allowing for a borderless definition. Now that the human soul has become so much more multi-faceted, so shouldn’t the music reflect this evolution?

Avishai Cohen, born into a family of Israeli musicians, wound up choosing the bass as his means of expressing what is in his heart. Having established himself as a prolific bass player and composer in New York over the last several years - primarily under the influence and tutelage of legend Chick Corea - he extends himself on Aurora, with varying degrees of success, with his never before heard vocals stylings.
