Robert L. Solso, «The Psychology of Art and the Evolution of the Conscious Brain»
The MIT Press | ISBN: 0262693321 | September 1, 2005 | 294 pages | PDF | 5.2 Mb

How did the human brain evolve so that consciousness of art could develop? In The Psychology of Art and the Evolution of the Conscious Brain, Robert Solso describes how a consciousness that evolved for other purposes perceives and creates art. Drawing on his earlier book Cognition and the Visual Arts and ten years of new findings in cognitive research (as well as new ideas in anthropology and art history), Solso shows that consciousness developed gradually, with distinct components that evolved over time. One of these components is an adaptive consciousness that includes the ability to imagine objects that are not present--an ability that allows us to create (and perceive) visual art. Solso describes the neurological, perceptual, and cognitive sequence that occurs when we view art, and the often inexpressible effect that a work of art has on us. He shows that there are two aspects to viewing art: nativistic perception--the synchronicity of eye and brain that transforms electromagnetic energy into neuro-chemical codes--which is "hard-wired" into the sensory-cognitive system; and directed perception, which incorporates personal history and knowledge--the entire set of our expectations and past experiences.

Duncan Richards / Jeffrey Aronson, «Oxford Handbook of Practical Drug Therapy»
Oxford University Press | ISBN: 0198530072 | 2005-06-02 | 720 pages | CHM | 23.6 Mb

Safe and effective prescribing is a cornerstone of proper patient care. There has recently been a significant increase in the numbers of healthcare professionals able to prescribe; however, sources of drug information tend to focus on only one area of prescribing. This book links practical information about how to use medicines with concise details about the pharmacology of a drug and the principles of clinical pharmacology that govern its action. The overall structure of this handbook is similar to that of the British National Formulary, with monographs on each drug arranged broadly by therapeutic category. When a drug has several different uses, these are brought together in a single monograph, allowing the reader to appreciate its full range of actions, whether therapeutic or adverse. Each drugs monograph provides the following information in a clearly laid out and standardised form: DT A graphical representation of the pharmacological actions of the drug, with its potential uses DT Practical advice on usage for a drug's major indications DT A list of the most common and serious adverse effects, with incidence figures and action to take DT Major drug-drug interactions DT Practical advice on monitoring for therapeutic and adverse effects DT Patient information - what you should tell your patients

Wiktor Stoczkowski, «Explaining Human Origins: Myth, Imagination and Conjecture»
Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 052165730X | 2002-07-22 | 244 pages | PDF | 1.2 Mb

The author argues that theories of human origins developed by archaeologists and physical anthropologists from the early nineteenth century to the present day are structurally similar to Western folk theories, and to the speculations of earlier philosophers. Reviewing a remarkable range of thinkers writing in a variety of European languages, he criticizes the lack of development in theories of human origins, but concludes optimistically that the power of the scientific approach will deliver more reliable theories--only if it is conscious of the baggage it carries over from popular discourse.

Laurence Tancredi, «Hardwired Behavior: What Neuroscience Reveals about Morality»
Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521860016 | 2005-09-19 | 240 pages | PDF | 1 Mb

In many areas of modern life rapid developments in science are overwhelming established norms. Brain biology, through DNA testing and advanced brain imaging techniques, has given medical scientists new insights into the functioning of the human mind. This erosion of long-standing beliefs has many implications for understanding and treating what society considers to be aberrant or immoral behavior. What medical science is indicating is that the focus of our emphasis on mental processes--particularly free will and intentionality--is shifting to recognition of the important role the physical brain plays on human thought and behavior. In Hardwired Behavior the author argues that social morality begins in the brain, for without the brain there would be no concept of morality.

Patricia Wolfe, «Brain Matters: Translating Research into Classroom Practice»
Association for Supervision & Curriculum Dev. | ISBN: 0871205173 | 2001-07 | 207 pages | PDF | 1.8 Mb

Everyone agrees that what we do in schools should be based on what we know about how our brain learns. Until recently, however, we have had few clues to unlock the secrets of the brain. Now, research from the neurosciences has greatly improved our understanding of the learning process, and we have a much more solid foundation on which to base educational decisions. In this book, Patricia Wolfe makes it clear that before we can effectively match teaching practice to brain functioning, we must first understand how the brain functions.
