Blur - Think Tank [2003]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE | 362 MB | Covers, Booklet | TIFF (LWZ) 300ppi | 30 MB
Pop/Rock | May 6, 2003 | Label: Virgin | RAR 10% Rec. | RS.com; Filesonic.com

Brit-poppers Blur have lost their guitarist, and they're all the better for it. Former axman Graham Coxon plays only on the album's closing track, "Battery in Your Leg," one of several yearning, sorrowful songs on Think Tank, an album so disjointed that it seems to artfully fall apart as it plays. Taking Coxon's place is just space, and experimentation -- Blur use their bass guitar as a lead instrument, employ simple but odd bits of guitar from frontman (and erstwhile Gorillaz voice) Damon Albarn and toss in delicate or brash keyboards. Their penchant for pillaging rock's past has vanished with Coxon, but their melodic faculties remain, and crafty tunes complement the sonic decay. There are flashes of punk and fresh hints of world music, as Andalusian string players adorn the gorgeously mournful single "Out of Time." The old Blur have died, but the new, more open Blur come startlingly alive.

The Flying Pickets - Lost Boys [Virgin, 1984]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | 304 MB
Pop | 1984 | Label: Virgin | Catalog Number: DIXCD 4 | RAR 3% Rec. | Filesonic

"Lost Boys" is the second recording by England's Flying Pickets (their first, "Live At The Albany Empire"). They emerged from the 'eighties new wave craze with their number one U.K. hit, "Only You," (included on this recording). The Pickets have an honest and soulful sound; their material is always strong - "The Tears Of A Clown," "Who's That Girl" and Dylan's "Masters Of War" are representative - and their arrangements convey the power of the song itself, without any extraneous frippery. Given this discernment, when the sextet does unite and deliver a surging stacked chord, as they do frequently on "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," they really command attention.

Telecats - Telecats 1 [in-akustik, 1998]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | 283 MB | Covers, Booklet | TIFF (LWZ) 300ppi | 19 MB
Jazz | Aug 4, 1998 | Label: in-akustik | Catalog Number: INAK 9049 | RAR 10% Rec. | Rapidshare, Filesonic

Two Germans, an Austrian and an American united in their love of Telecasters, produce some smoky, mostly instrumental, blues ideal for late-night snuggling. Recording in Bavaria, the quartet tips the hat to George Benson at one point and includes the Peter Green instrumental "Albatross." "Nelly," a slow, dramatic blues, conjures the spirit of the late Roy Buchanan and is the album's standout. The singing, in English, is passable and the band shows a sense of humor by finishing with the rollicking "I Want a Fraulein."

Jacques Loussier Trio - Ravel Bolero Loussier Nympheas [Telarc, 1999]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | 285 MB | Covers, Booklet | TIFF (LWZ) 300ppi | 10 MB
Jazz | May 25, 1999 | Label: Telarc | Catalog Number: CD 83466 | RAR 10% Rec. | Rapidshare, Filesonic

Although pianist/composer Jacques Loussier is best known for his groundbreaking J.S. Bach albums, his ability to reinvent the work of other composers is equally amazing. Ravel’s Boléro covers two very different aspects of impressionism: a new interpretation of "Boléro" by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) and seven short compositions by Loussier that were inspired by Claude Monet’s paintings of waterlilies or "Nymphéas." While his emotions are wrapped up in the music and time of Ravel, it is Loussier’s resourceful ability to dance between the borders of jazz and classical music that is most likely to give his latest Telarc release its enduring appeal.

Jon Faddis - Into The Faddisphere [1991]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | 289 MB | Covers, Booklet | TIFF (LWZ) 300ppi | 12 MB
Jazz | 1991 | Label: EPIC | Catalog Number: EK 45266 | RAR 10% Rec. | RS.com

At the age of 36, after many years in the shadow of his idol Dizzy Gillespie, trumpeter Jon Faddis was consciously going after developing his own voice. His rhythm section, led by pianist Renee Rosnes (who displays a style influenced by McCoy Tyner), is modern and Faddis plays six of his own compositions (in addition to Donald Brown's "The Early Bird" and "Ciribiribin"). But the trumpeter's seeming inability during this era to stay out of his upper register for more than a minute straight is often quite annoying, completely ruining the modal arrangement of "Ciribiribin." The title cut, a showcase for Faddis' high-note heroics, is also difficult to sit through. A disappointing mixed bag.

The Flying Pickets - The Original Flying Pickets [1994]

Pop | Dec 5, 1994 | Label: East West Records (WMG) | Catalog Number: 4509-98245-2 | RAR 10% Rec. | RS.com

A super collection of popular songs sung by England's premier acapella vocal group. The only instruments they use are their voices...and some very extremely clever and inventive studio wizardry! Includes their chart topping version of Yazoo's "Only You" as well as "When You're Young And In Love" and pop chestnuts as diverse as "Here There & Everywhere" to "Smells Like Teen Spirit". A sonic marvel!
