Terry Goodkind "The Law of Nines"
Publisher: Putnam Adult (August 18, 2009) | 512 Pages | ISBN: 0399156046 | PDF | 1 MB

Bestseller Goodkind (Confessor) ventures into thriller territory with results sure to please fans of his fantasy fiction. In the opening pages, Alex Rahl, the book's unwitting hero, saves the beautiful Jax from being run down on the street in Orden, Neb., by a plumbing truck flying a pirate flag. Jax, who turns out to be from an alternate reality where evildoers are attempting to seize control of her civilization, has traveled to Nebraska to seek Alex's help in saving her people. In Jax's world, magic takes the place of technology, but on earth she's stripped of her powers and forced to fight armed with only her trusty dagger. The author takes his time setting all this up, but once the story gets rolling, it's a gripping ride as the bad guys whoosh in between their world, which remains unseen, and ours. Fantasy and thriller readers alike will find themselves swept along to the final confrontation and looking forward to the next installment.

M. Akerman, H. A. Domanski, K. Jonsson "Fine Needle Aspiration of Bone Tumours: The Clinical, Radiological, Cytological Approach"
Publisher: S Karger Pub 2009 | 92 Pages | ISBN: 3805592140 | PDF | 11 MB

In recent years, fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has become a widely accepted procedure in the diagnosis of bone lesions. Rapid progress in immunocytochemistry and molecular genetics has increased the role of FNAC in the investigation of primary bone lesions. The purpose of this book is to facilitate the cytological evaluation of FNA smears from skeletal lesions and to provide diagnostic criteria based on the combined evaluation ofclinical data and radiographic and cytological features. The major aim is to thoroughly describe and illustrate the most common entities as well as the diagnostic use of ancillary techniques. A number of rare primary bone tumours/lesions are also illustrated.
The selection of entities illustrated in this comprehensive manual is based mainly on experience with patients referred to the Musculoskeletal Centre in Lund, Sweden, which now comprises smear data from approximately 1000 skeletal tumours/lesions collected between 1966 and 2006.
This publication will be a valuable resource for pathologists, cytopathologists, radiologists, oncologists and orthopaedic surgeons involved in the work-up and management of patients with bone lesions.

Menashe Bar-Eli "Regulation of Gene Expression in the Tumor Environment: Regulation of melanoma progression by the microenvironment: the roles of PAR-1 and PAFR"
Publisher: Springer 2008 | 150 Pages | ISBN: 1402083408 | PDF | 7.7 MB

It is now becoming very clear that the development and progression of tumor towards the malignant (metastatic) phenotype depends tightly on the interaction between the tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment. Tumor cells respond to stimuli generated within the tumor microenvironment for their growth advantage while the tumor cell themselves reshape and remodel the architecture and function of their extracellular matrices. The term tumor microenvironment is a wide umbrella consisting of stromal cells such as fibroblasts and endothelial cells and infiltration immune cells including T and B cells, macrophages, and other inflammatory cells (PMNs). These different components of thetumor microenvironment could have stimulatory and inhibitory effects on tumor progression by regulating the gene expression repertoire within the tumor cells on one hand and the stroma cells on the other. In this volume we have seven contributors who will discuss several different aspects on the cross talk within thetumor microenvironment components leading to the acquisition of the metastatic phenotype. It is our hope that these state-of-the-art studies will shed further light on our understanding of these complicated processes.

Novartis Foundation "Novartis Foundation Symposium 289: Growth Factors and Psychiatric Disorders"
Publisher: Wiley 2008 | 258 Pages | ISBN: 0470516046 | PDF | 2 MB

The recent identification of susceptibility genes for schizophrenia, depression and learning and memory dysfunction suggest thatpsychiatric disorders may be influenced by a small number of genes with multiple actions. This is the first book to investigate the role of growth factors in these disorders, which should provide clues to the underlying biochemical mechanisms. For example, recent studies have substantiated the provocative finding that neuregulin 1 (NRG1)is a candidate gene for schizophrenia. Neuregulin and its receptors, the ErbB tyrosine kinases, are essential for development of the cardiovascular and nervous systems. Lack of NRG1 function may be involved in dysregulation of synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity in the adult mediated through glutamate receptor function. Polymorphisms for BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) have also been implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. BDNF is a prevalent neurotrophic factor that plays an important role in the pathophysiology of depression, bipolar disease and other psychiatric disorders. Other topics addressed in this book include neuroplasticity and neurotrophic factors, signal transduction by neurotrophins, intracellular trafficking ofgrowth factors, trophic factors and cognitive functions, neurotrophins and depression, and pharmacological treatments of schizophrenia.
