Kabalevsky - Complete Piano Sonatas
Classical | Easy CD-DA, APE, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, LQ | 255 MB
CD Date: April 28, 2009 | NAXOS

Performed on this recording by Alexandre Dossin, First Prize and Special Prize winner at the 2003 Martha Argerich International Piano Competition, Kabalevsky’s highly virtuoso Piano Sonata No. 2 represents the peak of the composer’s writing for solo piano. It is coupled with the early Sonata No. 1, in which the influence of Prokofiev is seldom far away, the bitter-sweet Sonata No. 3 and the two crisply neo-classical Sonatinas. Kabalevsky’s Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 (8.557683) and No. 3 (8.557794)

Suzie Le Blanc Performs Sacred Works by Vivaldi
Classical | Easy CD-DA, FLAC tracks, No CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, LQ | 252 MB
CD Date: February 5, 2002 | Challenge

The marvellous Acadian soprano Suzie LeBlanc's four-work survey of Antonio Vivaldi's sacred music for solo voice represents an astute commingling of artist and repertoire. LeBlanc's is a pure, clear vocal instrument, but used with an expressive delicacy that redeems it from being the overly chaste, even sterile timbre affected by the descendents of the Emma Kirkby school of singing.

Schubert: Symphonie No 9 / Bernstein
Classical | Easy CD-DA, APE tracks, No CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, HQ | 224 MB
CD Date: September 10, 1990 | Deutsche Grammophon

This recording of Schubert's Symphony 9 in C Major, "The Great" is actually the Deutsche Grammophon (DG) recording by the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam (Netherlands), NOT the New York Philharmonic recording, available from Sony Classical, an earlier recording. Bernstein's Concertgebouw recording was made in 1987, and is in digital sound. It is very fine digital sound: warm, atmospheric, and rich in every register.

Schubert: Symphonien nos 5 & 8 "Unfinished" / Bernstein
Classical | Easy CD-DA, APE tracks, No CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, HQ | 233 MB
CD Date: Aug 1989 | Deutsche Grammophon

Bernstein would often simply sit back and listen to the orchestra make music, giving a small cue now and then, but otherwise letting the musicians take center stage. That is exactly what happens in these beautiful, flowing performances whose outstanding quality is their utter naturalness.

Richard Strauss: An Alpine Symphony
Classical | Easy CD-DA, APE, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, HQ | 246 MB
CD Date: June 20, 2006 | NAXOS

Written between 1911 and 1915, the Alpine Symphony was Strauss's last tone poem. Originally inspired by his participation in a real mountaineering expedition in his youth, during which the party lost its way on the ascent and was overtaken by a thunderstorm on the descent, it is perhaps the ultimate example of musical tone-painting.

Stravinsky - Jeu des Cartes, Orpheus - Neeme Jarvi
Classical | Easy CD-DA, FLAC, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, HQ | 294 MB
CD Date: May 2004 | Chandos

"Jarvi's 1992 coupling of Stravinsky's Jeu de Cartes and Orpheus was welcomed 'with open arms'... when it first appeared; he has an orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw, capable of lightness of touch and tone without sounding undernourished and a recording balance that manages intimacy, transparency and depth... Highly recommended." - Gramophone

Gliere: Symphony No. 3, Op. 42 "Ilya Murometz"
Classical | Easy CD-DA, FLAC tracks, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Covers, LQ | 302 MB
CD Date: January 28, 2003 | Telarc

Leon Botstein's swift and seamless pacing of Glière's Il'ya Murometz gives this exceptionally long symphony a much needed momentum while advancing the story's dramatic narrative. With each episode flowing easily and naturally into the next, Botstein avoids the ponderous plodding of Harold Farberman's gargantuan (and still record 93-minute) account on Unicorn. He also displays more vitality than Edward Downes in his generally fine, if rather tame rendition on Chandos. Still, Donald Johanos, who employs tempos similar to Botstein's and who has at his disposal the distinctly less-polished Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony, nonetheless gives the most exciting and action-packed performance of all.

Classical | Easy CD-DA, APE, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, HQ | 228 MB

The Trio Fontenay was formed in Hamburg in 1980. The original members of the trio were Wolf Harden, pianist; Michael Mücke, violinist; and Niklas Schmidt, cellist. The name "Fontenay" is old French for "source" and "fantasy", and is also the name of the street near the Hamburg Conservatory where the ensemble first met to practice. An important early influence on the group's interpretations came from classes they attended in Cologne which were taught by the Amadeus Quartet.

Hasse: Salve Regina / Goebel, Musica Antiqua Köln
Classical | Easy CD-DA, APE, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, HQ | 391 MB
CD Date: July 15, 1997 | Polygram Records

“During this visit, these young ladies were so obliging as to sing me a Salve regina, lately set by their father, in duo. It is an exquisite composition, full of grace, taste and propriety.” What more could one ask of an antiphon than that which Charles Burney found in an impromptu performance by Hasse’s daughters during a visit to their father in Vienna in 1772? Hasse composed several settings of the Salve regina of which Reinhard Goebel has chosen two for his interesting programme of vocal and instrumental pieces by the composer. ....

Grechaninov: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2
Classical | Easy CD-DA, APE, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, HQ | 295 MB
CD Date: July 17, 2001 | Naxos

Grechaninov's music is unrepentantly conservative and harks back to the compositions of previous generations, especially that of his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov. Their musical language is that of Borodin, Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, with plentiful melodies, colorful and virtuoso orchestration, and vigorous rhythms inspired by Russian folk music and dances. They reveal Grechaninov as a distinctive minor master of Russian late romanticism.
