Vivica Genaux - Bel Canto Arias
Classical | Easy CD-DA, FLAC tracks, No CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, LQ | 280 MB
CD Date: September 16, 2003 | EMI Classics

Vivica Genaux's voice is not the grand, cushioned instrument Marilyn Horne's was; neither does she have the girlish allure of Teresa Berganza. Her sound is not booming--rather, it is somewhat opaque, definitely appealing, and androgynous. She uses it skillfully: her coloratura is clean and accurate; her use of dark chest voice is limited to correct dramatic moments; the top (to a B-natural) is clear and bright (but still mezzo-like); and her upward and downward scales never miss a note.

Ernst Boehe - Symphonic Poems Vol. 2: Aus Odysseus' Fahrten
Classical | Easy CD-DA, FLAC, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, HQ | 350 MB
CD Date: April 19, 2005 | CPO

Ernst Boehe's late-romantic, post-Wagnerian symphonic poems abound in rich harmonies and lush orchestral textures, with much declamatory and heroic writing for the brass. Part Four of From Odysseus' Voyages completes the cycle begun in a previous CPO release. Richard Strauss, a friend of the composer, has strong influence, though Wagner's presence is unmistakable, with some passages bearing a striking resemblance to Götterdämmrung. Taormina, with its epic sweep and grand gestures, employs a less overtly chromatic language. Indeed, the modal structure of some of the Nordic-accented melodies (particularly the imposing main theme) suggests Grieg.

Ernst Boehe - Symphonic Poems Vol. 1: Aus Odysseus' Fahrten
Classical | Easy CD-DA, FLAC, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, HQ | 338 MB
CD Date: 2 Dec 2002 | CPO

German composers seem duty-bound to write "Tragic Overtures" and "Tragic Symphonies", and so far only Brahms and Mahler (in their very different ways) have succeeded in living up to the term's potential. Ernst Boehe (1880-1938) comes awfully close as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if posterity ultimately vindicates his effort. Written in an idiom somewhere between Brahms and Strauss, Boehe for the most part sounds refreshingly free of the usual problems that beset conservative German, British, and American music from the turn of the last century: a fear of exploiting orchestral color to its fullest, a pedantic approach to form, and an emotionally inhibited expressive range.

André Isoir - L'Art de la Fugue - BW1080
Classical | Easy CD-DA, FLAC tracks, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, HQ | 354 MB
CD Date: August 10, 2004 | Calliope France

André Isoir combines technical perfection and profound reflection to give each work the right movement and colour, and hence just the right mood of spirituality to suit its liturgical function. Isoir reflects a certain image of the constant solitude and wisdom of Bach. A wisdom that is as cheerful as it is 'mystical' and which is also capable of expressing triumpant, explosive joy.' Elgar: Piano Music / Ashley Wass
Classical | Easy CD-DA, APE tracks, No CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover, LQ | 170 MB
CD Date: September 26, 2006 | NAXOS

In days of yore, when the piano served as ye olde home entertainment center, a great demand existed for small pieces that were easy on the ear and required from the pianist just enough ability to get around the keyboard. Like many composers, Elgar was not averse to earning a quick buck, and he happily churned out such keyboard fluff or revamped pre-existing compositions when he was not writing symphonies, oratorios, and other serious fare.
Yet even the slightest piano trifles can sound like mini-masterpieces when the performer takes the trouble to play them artistically. And that's precisely what Ashley Wass does. His instinctive, natural sounding rubato and gift for lyrical inflection ennoble pieces such as Une idylle (originally for violin and piano) and Carissima. The Sonatina's brisk second movement is imaginatively pointed, and seems to dance off of the page.

Beethoven: Complete Works for Cello and Piano
Classical | Easy CD-DA, FLAC tracks, CUE, No Log | 2 CD, Cover, HQ | 507 MB
CD Date: September 1, 2009 | Brilliant Classics

Beethoven’s works for cello and piano span his creative life from the Op.5 sonatas of 1796 through to the late Op.102 pair from 1815. However, unlike the symphonies, piano sonatas or string quartets there is nounbroken thread in their composition. For example, the Op.5 sonatas are followed by the Op.69 some 12 years later, and the last two followed after a gap of seven years. From the beginning, Beethoven set out to test the cello to its limits. The Op.69 calls for the widest possible range of notes available on a six-octaveinstrument.

Virtuoso Lute Music From Italy and England - Jakob Lindberg
Classical | Easy CD-DA | APE, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Covers HQ | 317 Mb
Date CD: September 22, 1994 | Bis

The lute, the whole lute, and nothing but the lute: that's what you get on this excellently performed and recorded program from one of today's finest lutenists, Jakob Lindberg. The Swedish Lindberg demonstrates a special feel for these works from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. His articulation is more firm and accented than on some of his other recordings--those of Dowland's music, for instance--and the result is a clear, detailed, and confidently expressive performance. Unless you're a lute fan, you probably won't recognize most of the composers' names--Molinaro, Kapsperger, Piccinini, and Cutting, to name a few- -but you will appreciate the meaning of the word "virtuoso" in the disc's title. The sound places the lute right out in front and allows it a big, powerful presence

Corrette - Six Symphonies de Noë
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Covers HQ | 353 Mb
Date CD: 20 Jul 2009 | BRILLIANT CLASSICS

Michel Corrette (1709--1795) was born in Rouen, where his father Gaspard was an organist. Sadly, little is known about his early life, but we know he held positions as organist in several churches in Paris. For many years his reputation rested on his teaching methods and educational works, and he can claim to have written and published more teaching methods than any other composer. These include works on the mandolin, guitar, violin, cello, viola da gamba, organ, harpsichord, double bass and harp.

Bach - Cantatas BWV 36, 61, 62 - Gardiner
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC, CUE, No Log | 1 CDs, Cover LQ | 279 Mb
Date CD: July 13, 1993 | Polygram Records

Perhaps the finest exemplar of the baroque era (and for many music lovers, of the art of composition, period), J.S. Bach (1685-1750) composed major, complex works in every contemporary genre of music except opera. Both his sacred and secular compositions are among the finest ever penned. Their brilliant constructions synthesize the various national styles practiced by Bach's peers - though in terms of stature he had few of those.
