"Le royaume oublie: La tragedie Caathare" - Jordi Savall, Hesperion XXI
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC, CUE, No Log | 3 CDs, Cover LQ PDF | 1.12 Gb
Date CD: 1 décembre 2009 | Alia Vox

Catharism was a name given to a Christian religious sect that appeared in the Languedoc region of Southern France and flourished in the 12th and 13th centuries. Catharism had its roots in the Paulician movement in Armenia and the Bogomils of Bulgaria with whom the Paulicians merged. The Cathars saw matter as intrinsically evil, they denied that Jesus could become incarnate and still be the son of God.

This is an excellent sampling of some of Jessye's great works. She is so clear and vibrant. You will want to listen to this over and over again. I even bought some of the full length recordings of her music that was sampled here.

Pleyel - Wind Serenades
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, No CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Covers HQ | 253 Mb
Date CD: 11 Feb 2008 | Mdg

Ignaz Joseph Pleyel, known mostly as an early piano manufacturer, was also Haydn's student, and briefly his rival in a musical competition trumped up during Haydn's visit to London in 1792. Most of the recordings of Pleyel's music that have appeared thus far merely confirm why the Londoners continued to play Haydn and forgot Pleyel, but these wind pieces, counterparts to Mozart's large wind serenades, are different. The parallel is indeed to Mozart rather than to Pleyel's teacher: the works are four-movement pieces with the dimensions and movement sequences (the slow movements tend to be Romances or romance-like) of string quartets, not true divertimenti or serenades.

Clara Schumann - Complete Songs
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, No CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Covers HQ | 253 Mb
Date CD: 5 Jan 2009 | NAXOS

Clara Schumann the composer often worked in her husband's shadow, many of her songs being mistaken for his although those best loved by the public flowed from her pen. Some were composed and performed before their marriage, others set texts which he had suggested. ''There is really nothing better than composing for oneself,'' Clara noted in her diary in 1853, yet after Robert's death three year later she composed no more, making these the fruits of mutual love all the more precious.

In honour of Haydn's bicentenary CPO are delighted to present a rarely recorded work; Haydn's two act singspiel Die Feuersbrunst oder das abgebrannte Haus (The Conflagration or The Burned House). Between the years of 1773 and 1779 Haydn was musical director at the court of Nikolaus Esterházy. In the summer months the Prince moved to his palace in Esterházy (now in Hungary) and commissioned Haydn to write puppet operas to entertain himself, his family and his servants.

Mieczyslaw Karlowicz: Symphonic Poems, Vol. 2
Classical | Easy CD-DA | APE, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Covers HQ | 262 Mb
Date CD: October 28, 2008 | Naxos

Mieczyslaw Karlowicz was a significant talent, and his early death in 1909 (at age 33) was a serious loss to 20th century Polish music. His symphonic poems are typically refulgent late-Romantic works, full of ambition and, to be frank, pretension. Consider the three parts of Op. 10 (Eternal Songs): Song of Everlasting Yearning; Song of Love and Death; Song of Eternal Being. Heavy-duty stuff, and there's no point in pretending that Karlowicz, talented as he was, did full justice to the program, but the point is that he tried, tried hard, and produced gobs of richly entertaining music in the process.

Thomas Campion: Elizabethan Songs
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, No CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Covers HQ | 264 Mb
Date CD: Jan 30 2001 | Classical Express

Thomas Campion (1567-1620) was a poet as well as a musician, and his songs definitely reflect this ability, for they could just as well be read as sung. Philip Rosseter ( his friend) states that his 118 songs were "superfluous blossomes of his deeper Studies," no doubt referring to his Latin poetry , or perhaps medicine, which was his profession.

Antonio Lotti: Kyrie; Gloria; Missa del Sesto Tuono
Classical | Easy CD-DA | APE, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Covers HQ | 269 Mb
Date CD: March 26, 2002 | Hungaroton

Here are three of this early 18thC composers masses of the Venice school, which have also received praise from Pope Pius X. It has constant harmonic tension with flowing melody and fine instrumental orchestration soaring around, above and inbetween.
This is fine performance by Camerata Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra and Lotti Chamber Choir all conducted by Ferenc Rozsa. Especially captivated by the Gloria in D Major, which is particularly glorious with its fine solo vocalists framed by baroque instrument flourishes! Magnificent!

Giovanni Bottesini - Tre Grande Duetti
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Covers HQ | 327 Mb
Date CD: January, 2008 | Zuk 329

Both musicians are members of the Radio-Sinfonie-Orchester Frankfurt, and they teamed up for another Bottesini disc (an earlier one had been published by CPO, iirc). I was most amazed when I first listened to a concerto for double bass and orchestra by Bottesini, performed in a small castle chapel some years ago. The sound was so unusual. Now comes the added joy of two double basses playing together. Hopefully, you like it as much as I do.
