Couperin: Concerts Royaux, Les Goûts-réünis / Cuiller, Stradivaria
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Covers HQ | 315 Mb
Date CD: 01/10/2006 | Mirare

For more than thirty years, François Couperin was one of the great musical figures at court. But despite this prestigious status, few primary sources concerning him have come down to us. No autograph manuscript has ever been found. If the art of François Couperin has finally survived for posterity, it is entirely thanks to the editions published in his lifetime under a succession of royal privileges. The 'Concerts Royaux' and 'Les Goûts Réunis' form a homogeneous corpus of fourteen groups, very likely composed at the same period, in 1714 and 1715. The title of the second publication is quite explicit; as a great admirer of the Italian masters, and of Corelli in particular, Couperin here displays his resolve to work towards a synthesis of the French and Italian styles, thus combating those supporters of French music who still refused to countenance art from beyond the Alps. With their great melodic inventiveness, the 'Concerts Royaux' and 'Les Goûts Réunis' offer a body of chamber music full of variety and contrast; they combine elements of French grace, restraint and intimacy with Italianate energy, brilliance and vitality.

Telemann: Complete Trio Sonatas for Violin, Flute & B.C
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, CUE, No Log | 2 CDs, Covers HQ | 655 Mb
Date CD: February 10, 2009 | Brilliant Classics

There is a biblical injunction that when one gives, the left hand should not know what the right hand is doing. Brilliant seems to have taken this advice to heart. The front and back of this release, as well as the cover of the CD booklet, promise us the “Trio Sonatas for Violin, Flute & B.C. (complete).” What the discs contain, as the CD booklet discusses, are the complete sonatas for violin, recorder, and continuo. Compounding its mistake, Brilliant identifies Trio Sonata TWV 42: F8 as 42:f8. Taking things a step further, Brilliant identifies the last sonata on Disc 1 as TWV 42:f1, which the Telemann catalog identifies as being for two violins or two recorders, though it was apparently played in other combinations. But to add to the difficulty of identification, the first movement is listed as Triste, while the Telemann catalog gives Adagio. Brilliant does seem to have got things right regarding the sonatas for oboe, recorder, and continuo on disc 2.

Bernstein: Kaddish Symphony, Chichester Psalms / Sado, Menuhin
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Covers HQ | 246 Mb
Date CD: April 2008 | Warner Classics

Leonard Bernstein's <Symphony No. 3:Kaddish> and <Chichester Psalms> are very powerful works, but in them are obvious echoes of Mahler, Carl Orff, and even Respighi. That "but" is not pejorative since no work can be utterly original; still I have always found this composer to be a bit of poseur. In the "Kaddish," which is the Hebrew Prayer for the Dead, Yehudi Menuhin is assigned the role of Speaker, while soloists Karita Mattila and others sing in Hebrew with the Chorus, Children's Chorus and Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France under Yutaka Sado. The anger and bewilderment against a God who can allow such evil to exist is dramatically portrayed more in the music than in the words; while the companion pieces, the "Chichester Psalms," use the device of juxtaposing lines from the Psalms to form equally dramatic contrasts. All in all, this is a very worthwhile set to have and enjoy-although I do wish there were a way of blocking out the spoken parts on subsequent hearings.

J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach: Magnificat
Classical | Easy CD-DA | APE, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover hQ | 333 Mb
Date CD: August 10, 1995 | Deutsche Harm Mundi

This recording is something of a throwback to earlier days of the original instrument movement. The Collegium Aureum was an early exponent of this, and the 1966 recording of the JS Bach shows how this movement has evolved. Wonderful trumpets, struggling with the tessitura and tuning, and the (probably) part-time early music oboists, point up the most obvious difference. Early music was a labor of love in the 1960's, not a full time job. Which make me wonder if today's "authentic" performances aren't too clean, and too polished. How much rehearsal time did the "old wig" get, anyway, especially with works that were being given their premiere performances? Charles Rosen said that a truly authentic performance is impossible, you're either too early or too late.

Handel: Theodora / Christie, Les Arts Florissants
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, No CUE, No Log | 3 CDs, Covers HQ | 858 Mb
Date CD: September 23, 2003 | Erato

Theodora was Handel's next-to-last oratorio, and though it was a failure at its premiere, Handel preferred it above all his others. It tells of the martyrdom of the Christian Theodora (soprano) and her beloved Didymus (countertenor) at the hands of the Romans, with the villainous Valens (bass) in charge. Septimius (tenor) is a sympathetic Roman soldier and Irene (soprano) is Theodora's pious friend. This new recording presents the 3-hour work complete and is simply beautiful: Sophie Daneman sings Theodora's heart-felt arias expressively and with great innocence and lovely tone; Daniel Taylor's slim-voiced but sincere Didymus is effective; Valens's arias are spiteful and aggressive, and Nathan Berg makes a superb heavy; Richard Croft is magnificent in the complex role of Septimius, making his fast, coloratura-filled music sound easy, and Juliette Galstian is suitably devout and attractive of tone for Irene. As usual, William Christie and his Les Arts Florissants are right on the money, playing and singing with verve and commitment. Every so often the chorus (and Galstian) give away the fact that they aren't native English-speakers, but it hardly matters. Those who love Messiah and want to get to know some more Handel will be happy to encounter Theodora. Recommended.

Bach: Concertos For Solo Harpsichord - 1, 4, 5, 6
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover LQ | 443 Mb
Date CD: May 2009 | Regis

"crisp, clear-sighted approach to the music, all of which proceeds at a proper tempo and, where appropriate, with a spring in its heels. The slow movements are sensitively expressive ... this is basically how such works would have been heard in their own time, you may feel this is the way it should be ... The strings are 'authentic' and respectful of every element of style ... I thoroughly enjoyed this disc and ... the superb recording"

RAMEAU: La naissance d'Osiris / Abaris ou les Boreades
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover hQ | 263 Mb
Date CD: 1 Dec 1996 | Naxos

Jean-Philippe Rameau was born in Dijon in 1683, in a house which still stands at 5-7 Rue Vaillant. The seventh of eleven children, he was sent to study law, but spent so much time composing and singing that he was expelled from school! That was to prove a very shrewd move for the world of music, as he became one of the finest organists, harpsichordists and conductors of his time. His compositions were vast in numbers, spreading from keyboard music through to ballet and opera.
The two works on this disc are orchestral suites drawn from dramatic works written towards the end of his life, La Naissance dating from 1754, with Abaris composed in the last year or his life, and was never performed in the composers lifetime.

Monteverdi: Scherzi Musicali A Tre Voci
Classical | Easy CD-DA | APE, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover hQ | 357 Gb
Date CD: August 25, 1998 | Naxos

This is apparently the only complete recording of the Scherzi musicali in print. How odd: these straightforward settings of Italian verse, scored for two sopranos and bass, are among Monteverdi's most accessible works: each stanza of a poem is set to the same music, with a ritornello (repeated instrumental interlude, in this case for two violins and continuo) separating the verses. Performers can avoid the potential repetitiveness by doing some verses as solos and adding embellishments to each verse. The instrumentalists do this quite nicely (the harpsichordist throws in a little flourish at the end of every piece); the singers don't do it enough. In addition, Vartolo takes most of these pieces at the same moderate tempo: it all begins to blur into Monteverdi-in-the-Morning.

Bach - Wedding Cantatas - Emma Kirkby
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover HQ | 277 Mb
Date CD: March 8, 1999 | DECA

Beautiful singing by the ever-delightful Emma Kirkby backed by some excellent playing by Hogwood's Academy of Ancient Music. Kirkby has impeccable phrasing and a light touch with Bach and there is an undeniably English sound to this CD, in places almost a hint of Purcell sung in German. This is Bach with a smile.
