Sibelius - Complete Symphonies - Bernstein
Classical | Easy CD-DA | APE, CUE, No Log | 4 CD, Cover hQ | 1.2 Gb
Date CD: June 2003 | Sony

Finland's Jean Sibelius is perhaps the most important composer associated with nationalism in music and one of the most influential in the development of the symphony and symphonic poem. Sibelius was born in southern Finland, the second of three children. His physician father left the family bankrupt, owing to his financial extravagance, a trait that, along with heavy drinking, he would pass on to Jean. Jean showed talent on the violin and at age nine composed his first work for it, Rain Drops. In 1885 Sibelius entered the University of Helsinki to study law, but after only a year found himself drawn back to music. He took up composition studies with Martin Wegelius and violin with Mitrofan Wasiliev, then Hermann Csillag. During this time he also became a close friend of Busoni. Though Sibelius auditioned for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, he would come to realize he was not suited to a career as a violinist.

Veracini: 5 Ouvertures / Goebel, Musica Antiqua Köln
Classical | Easy CD-DA | APE tracks, No CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover LQ | 412 Mb
Date CD: June 13, 1995 | Polygram Records

Veracini's music is little known, but the neglect is as unjustified as the traditional unfavourable comparison with Vivaldi. Something of the particularity of his performing manner was noticed during Veracini's lifetime by the English historian Charles Burney, who once remarked that ''by travelling all over Europe he formed a style of playing peculiar to himself''. The same might be said of his composing, which far from being simply an assimilation of contemporary modes speaks with a sharply individual voice that constantly surprises with its freshness and originality.

The disc starts off with the admirable Adagio con variazioni by Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936). The work expresses warmth, great beauty and a dignified maturation of the classical bequest of Italian composers of the late nineteenth century. The music was composed after an original theme by Antonio Certani, one of Respighi's friends.

'...the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performs magnificetly from beginning to end, coupling elegance, eloquence, passion, and poser with Hyperion's fastidious sound in a way that compels admiration from the listener for conductor, ensemble and composer alike. Handley's is the definitive version of the Hebridean Symphony, outstripping that available on Naxos in every regard, and with the other works on this disc to further commend it, this release sails effortlessly into port as the newest inductee into Fanfare's Classical Hall of Fame. (Fanfare, USA) 'The best Bantock record I have ever heard' (CDReview) 'Magnificently recorded and performed. When audiences are crying out for 'melodious music' how can such music as this have been ignored for so long?' (Gramophone) 'Ce disque superbe ravira les mélomanes romantiques curieux' (Répertoire, France) 'A towering classic, as important as a landmark in the rediscovery of British music as it is a monument to the technique of orchestral recording. Music, performance, recorded sound and notes are all superb'

Biber Harmonia Artificioso - Goebel
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC, CUE, No Log | 2 CD, Cover LQ | 586 Mb
Date CD: May 11, 2004 | Archiv Produktion

This album was nominated for a 2005 Grammy Award for "Best Small Ensemble Performance
Reinhard Goebel and his ensemble, Musica Antiqua Koln, have been pioneer advocates for Biber's music for almost 20 years. MAK's recording of Mensa Sonora set high standards for this composer at a time when few ensembles would take the risk. Now, widely accepted as important to the baroque repertory as Corelli, taken up by a range of esteemed performers such as John Holloway and Andrew Manze, Biber is commonly represented in the CD catalog and heard often on classical radio.

Mozart: Clarinet Quintet, "kegelstatt" Trio
Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, No CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover LQ | 233 Mb
Date CD: August 29, 2006 | Naive

Mozart's Kegelstatt* Trio for clarinet, viola and piano (and sometimes played by clarinet, violin and piano, or even violin, viola and piano) was one of the earliest true masterpieces featuring a clarinet. The instrument itself had been invented about eighty years earlier and as late as 1750 was described in an encyclopedia as 'a kind of oboe'! Although there had been some earlier pieces featuring clarinet, none came anywhere near the two pieces featured here. And here we have marvelous performances by one of my favorite string quartets, Quatuor Mosaïques, an original instruments group who are the crème de la crème of such groups. And the clarinetist with them is Wolfgang Meyer who plays a basset clarinet, that instrument that allows the clarinetist to play a third lower than the usual instrument; Mozart made use of this range in both these works as well as in his Clarinet Concerto.

Max Bruch & Hugo Wolf - Weihnachtskantaten
Classical | Easy CD-DA | APE, CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover HQ | 216 Mb
Date CD: Jan 1989 | Koch/Schwann

Bruch was born in Cologne, Rhine Province, where he received his early musical training under the composer and pianist Ferdinand Hiller, to whom Robert Schumann dedicated his piano concerto. Ignaz Moscheles recognized his aptitude. He had a long career as a teacher, conductor and composer, moving among musical posts in Germany: Mannheim (1862-1864), Koblenz (1865-1867), Sondershausen, (1867-1870) Berlin (1870-1872), and Bonn, where he spent 1873-78 working privately. At the height of his reputation he spent three seasons as conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society (1880-83). He taught composition at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik from 1890 until his retirement in 1910. Bruch died in his house in Berlin-Friedenau.
Hugo Wolf (March 13, 1860 – February 22, 1903) was an Austrian composer of Slovene origin, particularly noted for his art songs, or Lieder. He brought to this form a concentrated expressive intensity which was unique in late Romantic music, somewhat related to that of the Second Viennese School in concision but utterly unrelated in technique.

Classical | Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks, No CUE, No Log | 1 CD, Cover LQ | 250 Mb
Date CD: November 15, 1993 | Hyperion UK

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi achieved only modest success during his short lifetime, but the twenty years following his death(at the age of 26) in 1736,saw an extraordinary change, turning him into one of the most-published composers of the 18th century. An Eighteenth Century French writer described the 'Stabat Mater', completed as the composer lay dying, as the 'masterwork' of Latin music'.
'This is so greatly superior to all previous recordings of Pergolesi's deathbed Stabat Mater as to put the others completely out of the running' (Gramophone)
