His Sonata is absolutely loaded with beautiful material and, as far as cello writing goes, Pierné knew no limits. The fast middle section starts out strict, however hinting desire. Build-up upon build-up become frustrating, and yet, sensual. The more he wants the thicker the chords, the bigger the shifts. It's all terribly exciting, but the expression is serious.

Giovanni Battista Fontana (c. 1571, Brescia, Italy – c. 1630, Padova, Italy) was an Italian Baroque composer and violinist.
He worked in Brescia, Rome, Padova. He died in 1630 during a plague.
Nearly all information preserved about him comes from the preface of his posthumously published 18 (sometimes incorrectly stated 12) sonatas (Sonate a 1.2.3. per il violino, o cornetto, fagotto, chitarone, violoncino o simile altro istromento, Venice, 1641). They are among the earliest sonatas of this form, consisting of 6 sonatas for solo violin/cornetto with continuo and 12 sonatas for various instruments.

The music of Ennio Morricone is, of course, cinematic in sweep and its gradations of nuance and emotion. The Vienna-based string trio Triology does an excellent job here massaging these 12 Morricone film pieces for all their cinematic dynamism, but they go further. They transform "Gabriel's Oboe" (from The Mission) into a brief, mournful Baroque-ish piece and elevate "The Man with the Harmonica" (from Once upon a Time in the West) into a howling, bent-note, shuffling delight. Pitching the violins of Daisy Jopling and Aleksey Igudesman together with the cello of Tristan Schulze, Triology utilize their lower-key ranges for deft rhythmic effect, giving Morricone's music a strong swing. With the Morricone Fistful of Film Music anthology and the John Zorn tribute, The Big Gundown, Triology's nod to the master of film music is graceful and talented and full of adventurous fun.

Penderecki's early avant-garde works are presumably the place to start if you want to get skeptics interested - indeed, one characteristic feature of the music on this disc is that in addition to the uncompromised artistic content, there is also surface excitement; figures, tensions and dynamics that will appeal to even those not used to concentrated listening to this kind of music. And this places Penderecki in a quite special position among the vanguards of the 60s avant-garde. It should be added that the music has lost none of the urgency, intensity, originality or power, even though the shock effect of the new might be gone - these works are, as opposed to many works of the period (or any period) works that has withstood the test of time, and they must, I think, sound as absorbingly, penetratingly raw and extraordinary now as I imagine they did back then.

Once virtually forgotten, Antonio Vivaldi now enjoys a reputation that equals the international fame he enjoyed in his heyday. Born in Venice in 1678, the son of a barber who was himself to win distinction as a violinist in the service of the great basilica of San Marco, where the Gabrielis and Monteverdi had once worked, he studied for the priesthood and was ordained in 1703. At the same time he established himself as a violinist of remarkable ability. A later visitor to Venice described his playing in the opera-house in 1715, his use of high positions so that his fingers almost touched the bridge of the violin, leaving little room for the bow, and his contrapuntal cadenza, a fugue played at great speed. The experience, the observer added, was too artificial to be enjoyable.
