Isabel (Betsy Blair) is a good-natured and sensible spinster who lives in a small town with her widowed mother. She is losing all her hopes of getting married and having babies. A bunch of bored middle-aged friends decide to play a trick on Isabel: Juan (José Suárez), the youngest and best-looking of them all, will pretend to fall in love with her. As Isabel lives the courtship full of hopes and joy, Juan realizes too late the cruelty of the situation; and, still pushed by his buddies, doesn't dare tell Isabel the truth. When the day of the gala dance in the town's Club comes, Isabel is still living her dream of love. She expects her engagement to be publicy announced from the stage, but Juan, desperate, tries to do anything to shy away from the muddle.

The coward of the film’s title is Amitabha Roy, a screenwriter on his way to Hashimara to stay with his brother while he soaks up the local colour of the region for a film he is currently writing. When his car breaks down miles from anywhere and he is unable to get a replacement part for the car, Roy has no option but to take up the offer of hospitality from Bimal Gupta, a tea-planter that he meets at the garage. Arriving at Gupta’s home however, he finds that he recognises the man’s wife Karuna, a woman he gave up while a college student in Calcutta, unwilling to oppose the plans that her uncle had for the young woman. Still single and seeing her married to a man he feels is beneath her, living in a remote region far from civilised society, Roy recognises the error he made in the past as an act of cowardice. But is it too late now to make amends?

Olivier - meticulous, careful, even-handed - teaches carpentry at a vocational school in Liège. He's asked to take on Francis, 16, a new student. He declines the request then begins to watch, even spy on, the new lad. Olivier knows something. Victor Banev, a Russian writer now living in America, is seeking his daughter, Ira, in the expanse of his former homeland. Banev's ultimate destination is a remote Siberian town of Tashlinsk, where military forces are now in control after some sort of unexplained catastrophe. In the city of Tashlinsk, mysterious circumstances have led to non-stop rainfall and the appearance of eerie characters called 'mokretsy' (the Wet Ones, or “Aquatters”), who are either aliens or mutants, and who generate a special energy barrier to protect themselves from or to prevent communication with undesirable human specimens.
The mokretsy appeal to gifted children who in the past had been in a special boarding school in Tashlinsk. And amongst them is Victor Banev’s daughter. Under the keen supervision of the mokretsy, the gifted kids are gradually transformed into a cadre of twisted mental geniuses with seemingly no humanity, no attachments or sentimentalities.

Filmed over five nights in New York, Lou Reed's Berlin shows Reed with a lively backup band—including horns, strings, a gospel choir, and Sharon Jones and Antony as background singers—performing Berlin from start to finish, then running through a short encore of "Candy Says," "Rock Minuet," and "Sweet Jane." Berlin's relatively hooky first half is rendered ferociously, with nearly every song ending in extended dual-guitar jams. Then the quieter, sadder second half takes on a mesmerizing spiritual quality, as all the musicians onstage support Reed's endearingly awkward descriptions of demimonde degradation.

An automobile is blown up as it crosses the Mexican border into the United States. Mike Vargas, a high ranking Mexican narcotics official on honeymoon with his bride Susie is drawn into the investigation because a Mexican national has been accused of the crime. The figurative and physical presence of Hank Quinlan as the 330 pound sheriff looms all over. Quinlan is a fanatic where "justice" is concerned, even if obtaining it involves planting evidence. Quinlan's reputation for law and order enables him to bend the law without question until Vargas confronts him. From that point on, it's a battle of wits between the two that, with an accelerating pace, rushes to a climax.

Mathias is professor of linguistics at a Belgian university. Although middle-aged, he is unmarried, but has a mistress, Anne. Their relationship looks as if it may be coming to an end, but Mathias tries to rekindle the flame. After a passionless dinner together, Mathias leaves to catch a train to a town where he is to give a lecture. On the train, Mathias is delighted to see Anne enter his compartment. The couple are unable to talk with one another and Mathias falls asleep. Having dreamt about a train accident, Mathias awakes to find his train has stopped and Anne has vanished. When he leaves the train to investigate, the train continues on its way, leaving Mathias and two other men stranded in open countryside. Under nightfall, the three men make their way to a nearby village which is strangely silent. When they finally meet the locals, Mathias is surprised that he cannot recognise their language. Where is he, and what has happened to his beloved Anne?

Although in their early twenties, Colin (Tim Roth) and his sarcastic manipulative brother Mark (Phil Daniels) still live with their parents Mavis and Frank Pollack in a housing project in the East End. With Colin and Mark endlessly harassing each other like teenagers, the family endures unemployment, poverty and the hardship of life in early 1980s Britain. Enter Coxy (Gary Oldman), a violent local skinhead who befriends Colin, and add a job offer for Colin from a rich aunt and family tensions eventually erupt into jealousy and conflict. First shown on television, it is a memorable and closely observed account of life in Thatcher's Britain.

This East German film about corruption in high places, and self-serving party officials, and abuse of power, was withheld from release from its completion in 1965 until 1990, shortly before the Berlin wall went down and the reunification process began. In the story, a self-important and self-involved judge abuses power readily. He begins an explicitly sexual affair with a sixteen-year old waitress, who at first thinks there may be some romantic bond between them, but who later sees things as they are, and goes off on her own.

Set in 18th-century South America, The Golden Coach (Le Carrosse D'Or) stars Anna Magnani as an earthy Commedia Del Arte performer. Magnani is lusted after by diplomat Duncan Lamont, who leaves both his job and his mistress to pursue the sexy actress. Also vying for Magnani's favors are a bullfighter and a nobleman. Magnani tries to avert bloodshed by giving away the Golden Coach that had been bestowed upon her by the expansive Lamont...

Two partisans resisting German incursions into Belorussia during World War II are separated from their fleeing comrades and are captured by the Germans. Along with a number of local villagers, they are sentenced to die. One of them dies with such overwhelming dignity, such grace, that no one present is unmoved, and the flame of resistance is successfully transferred to several of those who observe his death. This spiritual giant of a man also outfaces a despicable Russian schoolteacher from the area, who is an active collaborator with the Germans.

Big Louis Costillo, last of the old-style gang leaders is slain, and his former bodyguard Tony Camonte is taken into custody. Since Costillo's body has never been found, the police have to release him, though they strongly suspect Johnny Lovo paid Tony to remove Big Louis. Tony begins taking over the rackets in town with violent enforcement, and he becomes a threat to Johnny and the other bosses unless they work for Tony. Meanwhile, Tony's sister wants to be more independent, but finds it difficult to escape from her brother's overprotective grasp. The dissatisfaction of the other bosses and the relentless pursuit of the police push Tony towards a major confrontation.

After the death of his father, Siddhartha Chowhury (Dhritiman Chatterjee) is forced to drop out of medical school to support his family. He goes on a series of meaningless job interviews, growing increasingly alienated and angry. A comrade of his communist younger brother offers to help, but he rebuffs him. His beautiful sister Sutapa (Krishna Bose) easily finds work, but her relationship with the boss brings scandal to the family. His poorer friends have turned to petty theft, while richer ones indulge in prostitutes. The only ray of hope in his life is the innocent Keya (Joysree Roy) who has troubles of her own.

A hangdog, middle-aged painter falls in love with a tender young college student after he leaves his philandering wife and his children in this romantic French drama. To console himself, the fundamentally bohemian Phillippe finds comfort in the arms of various prostitutes, especially Valeria. It is while searching for her that he meets lovely Justine, the student. Sparks fly and they move into together. Things go well until Phillippe begins pining for his children. This makes insecure Justine terribly jealous and tumult erupts until the aging artist is able to discover the true source of his anxieties.
