Giovanni Pierluigi da PALESTRINA (1525-1594) Missa Papae Marcelli - Odhecaton - Paolo da Col
APE (EAC Rip) + CUE + LOG files | scans HQ (complete booklet + covers) | DDD | TT: 65:12 | 276 MB + 159 MB (scans)
Release Date: November 9, 2010 | Recorded in the parochial Church of S. Rocco in Miasino (Novara), Italy, September 13-16, 2009

The Missa Papae Marcelli by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina is a crossroads of historical and musical doubts and paradoxes. After all, legends such as these are always nourished first in the shadows of history, in the ambiguous folds of testimonies; enigma is the birthplace of creative fantasy, spurring the collective imagination in its constant aspiration to embody mythical forms. Palestrina himself was probably the first to consciously set the stage for the creation of the myth which would surround him and his work.

Release Date: 4 Nov 2010 | Recorded in the Eglise de Notre-Dame du Liban, Paris in February 2010

The richness and splendour of French Baroque sacred music, by turns gravely sombre and spectacularly exuberant, have already been amply demonstrated by Hervé Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel through their series of recordings on Glossa of music by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. But it was not just in Paris or in the country’s religious foundations that such involved music-making was called upon, but also in cities such as Troyes and Châlons-sur-Marne where Pierre Bouteiller, maître de musique in cathedrals there during the reign of Louis XIV, composed his Missa pro defunctis, a beautiful setting scored for five voice parts with instrumental accompaniment.

Why not imagine that today is December 5, 1830, rather than December 5, 2003? And that you are a Parisian concertgoer, more or less knowledgeable about the music of the time, including that of Ludwig van Beethoven, whose symphonies were just in the process of "being discovered" by Parisians of the time? Place yourself, if you will, in the concert hall of the Paris Conservatoire on this date, to hear the first public performance of any work by a young French composer – still six days shy of his 27th birthday – who, in the previous two years, had been dramatically affected by hearing Beethoven's symphonies.

Peter PHILIPS (1560 - 1628) Cantiones Sacrae - Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge - Richard Marlow

Release Date: 01-Jun-2010 | Recording venue Chapel of Trinity College, Cambridge; 11-13 January 2002

Peter Philips was, after William Byrd, the most published English composer of the Elizabethan-Jacobean Age. He was also, in his day, the best-known English composer on the European mainland but his absence from his homeland after the age of about twenty-one means that he remains relatively neglected at home. Born in 1560 or 1561, he trained as a choirboy at St Paul’s Cathedral in London and may have studied keyboard playing with Byrd. In 1582 he fled England to avoid persecution as a Roman Catholic, making his way to Rome. In 1585 he joined the entourage of another Roman Catholic refugee, Sir Thomas Paget, travelling with him through Northern Europe for the next five years, eventually settling in Antwerp in 1591. In 1593 he was accused of plotting against Elizabeth I and arrested, but was eventually exonerated. He joined the court chapel of Archduke Albert, Viceroy of The Netherlands, as organist in 1597 and remained there until his death in 1628.

Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Die Zauberflöte - The Magic Flute - René Jacobs
APE (EAC Rip) + CUE + LOG files | scans HQ (covers) | 3 CD set | DDD | TT: 2h47' | 327 MB + 194 MB + 207 MB + 46 MB (scans)
Release Date: 09/14/2010 | Recorded at Teldex Studio Berlin, in November 2009

This recording represents the peak of René Jacobs's Mozartian enterprise: after showing us an alternative way of looking at the Da Ponte trilogy and taking a profoundly innovative approach to the two great opere serie (Idomeneo and La clemenza di Tito), he has now sets out to harmonise and clarify the myriad viewpoints exposed in Die Zauberflöte, ranging far beyond its Masonic rituals and mixture of dramatic genres. As a result, Mozart's most 'nocturnal' work is illuminated as if by . . . magic.

The mass is interspersed with William Byrd's exquisite propers for the fourth Sunday of Advent, and framed by responsories by Taverner and Sheppard, Robert White's exuberant setting of the Magnificat, and Tallis' own sublime Videte miraculum.

Norbert BURGMÜLLER (1810-1836) Sinfonien Nr. 1 & 2 - Hofkapelle Stuttgart - Frieder Bernius
DDD | TT: 64:53 | APE (EAC Rip) + CUE + LOG files | scans HQ (booklet +covers) | 263 MB + 48 MB (scans)
Release Date: 10 May 2010 | Recorded at the Studio Karlsruhe, Sendesaal, 1 May 2006 and 2 Februar 2007

In February 2010 Norbert Burgmüller would be 200 years old. The legacy of this composer from Düsseldorf includes, in addition to the two symphonies recorded on the present CD, a piano sonata, 22 Lieder, and several smaller works. Robert Schumann described Burgmüller’s first symphony as “the most significant, noble work written in recent times.” Whereas in this symphony the models of the composer – Beethoven, Weber and Spohr – are clearly recognizable, the second, unfinished symphony (or at least it has been handed down unfinished), on the other hand, is a very original work. The recording by the Hofkapelle Stuttgart under Frieder Bernius is an impressive homage in honor of the 200th birthday of the composer.

William HAYES - The Passions - An Ode for Music (Oxford, 1750) - Anthony Rooley
DDD | TT: 75:43 | APE (EAC Rip) + CUE + LOG files | scans HQ (booklet +covers) | 346 MB + 115 MB (scans)
Release Date: 24 May 2010 | Recorded in the Volkshaus Basel (Switzerland) in October 2008

During the course of the Age of Enlightenment a rather special, indeed unique, occasion took place (on July 6, 1750, to be exact) with the first performance – in Oxford as part of a University celebration there – of a composition by William Hayes to a well-known humanist text: The Passions, An Ode for Music (written in 1746 by William Collins). In those days the detailed study of human passions and feelings was an omnipresent theme in the worlds of science and art. With such a backdrop, the poetry of Collins and the music of Hayes join together to create a captivating work which manifests a deep understanding of human nature, is packed tight with philosophical references and which enjoys a subtly sharp dry sense of humour, known beyond the Isles’ shores as British... The result is a ‘dramatic oratorio’ of the greatest musical quality, which combines the language of the late Baroque with elements of the style galante and which even allows one a glimpse of the arrival of Classicism. In a series of consistently original and surprising mini-scenes, ten ‘passions’ become involved in theatrical disputes (among them Fear, Revenge, Melancholy, Hope and Cheerfulness). Anthony Rooley is responsible for the rediscovery of this significant work and here leads a performance with soloists and ensembles closely linked with the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, in the first release of a new collection directed by Glossa and the Swiss establishment, the leading educational and research centre in the field of early music.

Discover a world full of harmony and musical delicacy, in superb accounts by Rinaldo Alessandrini, who has consistently championed baroque Roman composers. The sacred output of Alessandro Melani is today almost totally unknown both to musicologists and to the public. There are no scholarly monographs on this repertory, still less recordings or performing editions. Alessandrini conducted the first modern performance of the oratorio Il sacrificio di Abel at the Semana de Musica Religiosa in Cuenca (Spain) in 2003, and has given several performances of the Litany of the Blessed Virgin and some of the motets.

Pierre MOULU (1484-1550) Messes Alma redemptoris Mater & Missus est Gabriel Angelus - The Brabant Ensemble - Stephen Rice
DDD | TT: 74:38 | APE (EAC Rip) + CUE + LOG files | scans HQ (booklet +covers) | 266 MB + 54 MB (scans)
Release Date: 05/2010 | Recorded in the Chapel of Harcourt Hill campus, Oxford Brookes University, on 4-6 September 2009

The Brabant Ensemble and Stephen Rice bring another forgotten Renaissance master to the ear of the listening public. Little is known about the life of the composer Pierre Moulu—he joins the long lists of Renaissance musicians whose lives are all but entirely masked in shadow. Fortunately a number of his works found favour with his contemporaries to the extent that they appear in numerous early manuscripts and prints, and they have attracted the attention of music historians since the earliest days of the discipline in the late nineteenth century. Like much of the large repertory of sixteenth-century polyphony, however, his works have rarely been performed in modern times, and this is the first recording devoted to his music.

After a much acclaimed exploration of the rarely frequented world of isorhythm (Dufay Motets), the Belgian musicologist and conductor now offers us the world premiere recording of this extraordinary mass for 24 voices by Padovano - a composer underestimated today but who was considered in 16th century Italy as "one of the founders of modern music"(Galilei)

Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809) Cello concertos - Jean-Guihen Queyras - Petra Müllejans
DDD | TT: 68:42 | APE (EAC Rip) + CUE + LOG files | scans HQ (covers) | 310 MB
Release Date: 2004 | Recorded March 2003 Berlin

On the plus side, Jean-Guihen Queyras is an exceptional soloist: just listening to him blast his way through the finale of the Haydn's C Major Concerto is a thrill in and of itself. Whether at high speed or in the same work's adagio, his contribution is, by any standard, first-rate. The coupling of the Monn concerto also makes sense, these being basically the only late-Baroque to mid-Classical period cello concertos that anyone cares about, and they are indeed fine works generally. If we could stop here then all would be well, but unfortunately life isn't always so simple because the success or failure of any concerto performance does not rest in the hands of the soloist alone.
