John Powell is the UK born film score composer, best known for his work on Shrek, Mr & Mrs Smith and the Bourne series of films.
Novelist Robert Ludlum's amnesia-plagued, tough-as-nails spy/assassin Jason Bourne again proves that success begats sequels, be they literary or cinematic. As he did for the saga's initial big screen installment, composer John Powell concocts an electro-orchestral fusion score that seasons its tense, bristling rhythms with dollops of melodicism, synth-atmospherics and staccato string figures. Those welcome touches hearken back to composer's similar work on the '03 action-thriller The Italian Job, with Powell initially evoking the film's exotic locales by employing a savory synth pop-meets-Eastern European palate. The tension-building rhythms and percussion flourishes familiar from Powell's other action-centric scores are the score's musical pulse - even if they eventually upset the finely honed balancing act by boiling over into the familiar explosive cliches of all too many thriller scores.

The highly anticipated second Shulman album, “In search of a Meaningful Moment” arrives. This album follows the worldwide success of the first album, “Soundscapes and Modern Tales, which was hailed as “the Israeli answer to Shpongle”. In making the new album, Shulman used many ground-breaking sounds and effects, hypnotic beats, and acoustical instruments, all combined brilliantly to create beautiful harmonies, interesting sonic structures, and deep emotional moments. This album aims at creating a new dimension of daydreaming, allowing the listener to experience the wild rose of winds that connect the mystical east and the modern west. Using sounds, Shulman softly paints the infinite deserts, seas, landscapes, temples and cities that surround us on our greatest life adventure - the search for a meaningful moment.

Magic Pie - Circus of Life (2007)
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMAGE+CUE+LOG | Full scans included | 445 MB
Progressive Rock | Publisher: Progress Records | Catalog Number: PRCD024

This is one of those rare albums that grabs you by the ears on first listen then improves with every playing. A stunningly eclectic song cycle, Circus of Life has so much going on that it's likely to appeal equally to fans of 70's melodic prog, British folkrock, ambient space music, fusion and symphonic rock.
The album, the second by this tight Norwegian sextet, comprises three epic pieces - the 46-minute, five-part title suite and two shorter tracks, "Pointless Masquerade" and "Watching the Waters". Each is packed with so many melodic hooks you can almost hum along with some passages on first listen. The centerpiece, "Circus of Life", is a wildly diverse romp that melds Gentle Giant-ish chorale figures, flamenco guitar breaks, Brahmsian symphonic passages, heavy prog workouts and Beatles-esque harmonies. Unpredictable and endlessly creative, Magic Pie simoultaneously embraces the conventions of classic prog, while also expandning the genre's boundaries. Highest recommendation.

With his breakthrough American hit "Save Tonight," alternative singer/songwriter Eagle-Eye Cherry became the latest member of his family to stir the music world: his father was avant-garde jazz trumpeter Don Cherry, and his sister was alternative rap pioneer Neneh Cherry.
Cherry offers up a low-key, melodic diary of tales of his misspent youth in New York. And despite the music's soft-focus part-Cat Stevens, part-Ben Harper leanings, occasionally you realize that Eagle-Eye must have pasted posters of Ozzy Osbourne and Jimi Hendrix on his bedroom wall. "Indecision" (supposedly a rejoinder to Stockholm neo-Nazi "White Noise" bands like Swastika) rides on a searing Richie Blackmore lick. "Save Tonight" is a bittersweet reworking of Peter, Paul and Mary's "Leaving on a Jet Plane" theme. The title song updates his late father's "Desireless," which is revitalized via sparse piano, a haunting trumpet, and Cherry's hypnotic, repetitive vocals. Here it's clear that, even though he is dabbling in the shoals of alt-folk-rock, Eagle-Eye can claim a limb on the family tree anytime he wants.

VA - Fusion For Miles:A Guitar Tribute (2005)
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMAGE+CUE+LOG | Full scans included | 391 MB
Jazz, Fusion | Publisher: Mascot | Catalog Number: 4041

Titled Fusion for Miles: A Guitar Tribute, this set is a bit unusual. A five-piece band that includes Dave Liebman on soprano sets up grooves and backgrounds that sound like Miles Davis' bands of 1969-1971. A different guitarist is featured on each of the ten selections, with the biggest names being Mike Stern, Bill Frisell, Bill Connors, and Pat Martino. Ironically, those four are each featured on pre-fusion Davis-associated songs ("So What," "Nefertiti," "Eighty-One," and "Serpent's Tooth") that are performed with funk rhythms and as if Davis had revived them in 1970. In addition to having a string of guitars in the foreground, it is unusual to hear this music without any trumpeters. But overall, the project is successful with plenty of fireworks and creative playing along the way, reviving music from 35 years earlier that still manages to sound fresh and slightly menacing.

This CD, Cool Water, along with recent siblings All Over You and The Unauthorized Breakfast Item, really show what the band has been up to in the last decade, namely that they still have outstanding songwriting. Performance and production values are also top notch. If you are feeling down and need some uplifting, positive music with finely honed ideas, lyrics and polished sounds look no further than this or any of the above mentioned titles.
