Ramnad Krishnan, Vidwan - Songs of the Carnatic Tradition / South India
EAC FLAC cue (390 MB) | NO LOG | booklet (10 MB) | ogg.160 (85 MB)
Nonesuch Explorer 72023 (1967) | classical South Indian, carnatic

At the time of this recording, the artists were in residence as Visiting Artists in the World Music Program at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut.
The artistry of Ramnad Krishnan was recorded here for the very first time. When that great musician died of a heart condition in January 1973 while at the prime of his concert career, this recording and its companion album Ramnad Krishnan: kaccheri (Nonesuch H-72040) were cited as "a consolation to those who knew him well and will miss his music.... Krishnan manages to communicate the consummate grasp of technique and melodic imagination for which he was so widely respected" (Jon Higgins, Journal of the Society for Asian Music).

Diabolus in Musica - Manuscrits de Tours
EAC FLAC cue (300 MB) | NO LOG | booklet (30 MB) | ogg.160 (70 MB)
Studio SM D2756 (1996) | medieval

Chris Hinze, Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Swamiji - Music for Meditation
EAC FLAC cue (350 MB) | NO LOG | scans (15 MB) | ogg.160 (70 MB)
Keytone KYT 756 Cd (1987/88) | new age - world-ethnic

After the successful Meditation & Mantras Vol. I and II Chris Hinze came up with this totally different approach towards Meditative music. Compared to the other two productions the vocals are less dominant whereas the instrumental diversity is more important. Clearly this is a CD with a wide musical range, resulting in beautiful serene music.

Diabolus in Musica - La Chambre des Dames
EAC FLAC cue (270 MB) | NO LOG | booklet (55 MB) | ogg.160 (65 MB)
Studio SM D2604 (1994) | medieval

During this long period, which began in his teens, he composed for himself and other leading Arab singers over 1,800 romantic and patriotic songs. EDUARDO PANIAGUA / 13.

EAC FLAC cue (350 MB) | NO LOG | booklet (25 MB) | ogg.160 (70 MB)
Pneuma PN-210 (2000) | medieval

Fairport Convention - Rising for the Moon
EAC FLAC cue+scans (250 MB) | NO LOG | ogg.160+scans (55 MB)
Island IMCD 155 (1975) | folk-rock

EAC FLAC cue (420 MB) | NO LOG | booklet (30 MB) | ogg.160 (80 MB)
Pneuma PN-220 (1996-2000) | medieval

The twenty-four narrative cantigas centered on El Puerto form an important chapter in Alfonso's Marian compilation. Firstly, they stand out owing to their number - more than are devoted to any other single sanctuary in the Cantigas. Secondly, they stand out in forming a lyric chronicle inspired by the signal events associated with the thirteenth-century repopulation efforts in and around Alcanate (the name the Arabs used for El Puerto de Santa María) and its re-Christianization under Alfonso X. Whereas Alfonso does not appear as the protagonist in the miracle accounts at other sanctuaries, in these two dozen cantigas Alfonso figures prominently in exactly half of them: twelve.

Win Mertens - Alle Dinghe
EAC FLAC cue (730 MB) | NO LOG | 3 CDs | scans (15 MB) | ogg.160 (160 MB)

Fairport Convention - Liege & Lief
EAC FLAC cue+scans (290 MB) | NO LOG | ogg.160+scans (60 MB)
Island Records (1969/2002) | folk-rock

For their fourth album, Fairport Convention released what is regarded by many as not only the best record in their history, but also one of the seminal English folk-rock albums of all time. This was also the album that marked the transformation of the group from, essentially, a rock band that utilized folk music (in tandem with modern singer/songwriter material) as a source for part of their sound, and an inspiration for their own songwriting, into a group specializing in reinterpreting traditional English songs. There's only one original number here, the soaring "Come All Ye," the rest being adaptations of old English folk songs; at the time, however, very few groups were doing this with any success, or mixing acoustic and electric sounds quite as adeptly, with the result that Liege & Lief was practically a consciousness-raising album for a lot of listeners. "Farewell Farewell," "Matty Groves," "Reynardine," and "Tam-Lin" were highlights of an LP filled with gems in this style, ornamented with gorgeous harmonies and striking instrumental virtuosity. — All Music Guide Bruce Eder

Win Mertens - Maximizing the Audience
EAC FLAC cue+scans (330 MB) | NO LOG | ogg.160+scans (90 MB)
Les Disques du Crépuscule 9G056 (1984) | new-age

Contemporary music seldom evokes philosophical reflections upon the Arts, yet the exquisiteness of the music of Wim Mertens demands it.
Mertens' music has its roots in American Minimal Music, a tradition which holds that composition can be achieved through the use of the fewest possible musical devices. Despite belonging to this tradition, Mertens' music is distinguishable from that of Reich and Glass, who are comparatively much more concerned with conceptual, System and Process music. These forms of musical conception may truly be described as objectified musical forms. As such they form an autonomous normative system which governs not only each individual composition but also the developmental trend of the composer. ... The repetition which influences the music of Mertens and indeed functions as its dominant compositional principle consists of a special dimension. The repetition occurs for two reasons. Firstly, it is intended to carve out a space for listening in the flowing stream of music and emotion and secondly, it is designed to enlist the feeling of pleasure.

The History of Fairport Convention
EAC FLAC cue (420 MB) | NO LOG | scans (20 MB) | ogg.160 (90 MB)
Island Records CIDD4 (1972) | folk-rock

This 1972 attempt at an overview of Fairport Convention's radical, spirited and beautiful contribution to music in the period 1969 to 1972 was originally a double album. To allow conversion to a single CD, it unfortunately lost two tracks, "Crazy Man Michael" and "Jigs And Reels", because it was assumed that anyone interested in the band would also want to own the superb Liege And Lief from which they are drawn. The flaw in this is that the songs on What We Did On Our Holidays, Unhalfbricking and Full House are just as classic and unmissable. The tracks drawn from these, that form much of the collection, span the broad range of styles that Fairport so expertly made their own. Every number is a stand-out of a different kind, but the Sandy Denny tunes "Fotheringay" and "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" and the Richard Thompson/ Dave Swarbrick collaborations "Sloth" and "Walk Awhile" are immortal by any standards. For those who own the four core albums, this CD still has its value. It contains the superb "Now Be Thankful", a stand-alone single, and a selection of most of the best tracks from the somewhat lesser album Angel Delight and the decidedly poorer Babbacombe Lee. Meet On The Ledge, the 1999 compilation of 1967 to 1975 material is a better overall collection--mostly because it is twice as long--but its track selection post-Full House is somewhat bizarre, only containing one track from each of the above two albums, a serious omission. -- James Swift - amazon.co.uk

Pentangle - So Early in the Spring
EAC FLAC cue+scans (255 MB) | NO LOG | ogg.160+scans (55 MB)
TSPIN CD 139 (1989) | folk-rock, folk

Pentangle - Cruel Sister
EAC FLAC cue+scans (200 MB) | NO LOG | ogg.160+scans (50 MB)
Transatlantic TACD 9.0058 O (1970) | folk-rock, folk
