Guitarist Joe Puma distinguishes the set with thoughtful, understated playing that calls to mind Kenny Burrell's own Prestige dates from this period. Pianist Mal Waldron, drummer Ed Thigpen, and bassist Earl May infuse the performances with a cohesive, relaxed swing. They give each other lots of space, and Waldron makes astute choices in his chord selection, phrasing, and comping strategies. The tracks comprise five pieces associated with Holiday and one Young original, written in homage to Lady Day.

Horace Silver's Rockin' With Rachmaninoff was originally conceived as a stage musical, complete with singers, dancers, musicians, and a narrator to tell the story of the composer's idea of Duke Ellington introducing Sergei Rachmaninoff to all the jazz greats in heaven. Though it was only performed a few times during a short run in 1989 at the Barnesdale Theatre in Hollywood, Silver had the foresight to record selections from it two years later, though it would be a dozen additional years before this music became available, released by Bop City.

Freddie Green (1911-1987) was known throughout his long career as the definitive rhythm guitarist. He rarely soloed (briefly on a few records early on), he stuck to acoustic guitar, and was often more felt than heard. Although he had originally played banjo, Green was playing guitar in New York in early 1937 when producer John Hammond heard him and immediately recommended him to Count Basie.

Mel Torme was known in his early years for his voice's rich, smoky-hued texture. Indeed, such was the smooth, flawless nature of his vocal delivery that he almost seemed to caress the melody of each song he sang. He continues to be regarded as one of the pre-eminent singers of the latter half of the 20th century. Significantly his influence can still be heard, most notably in the music provided by today's new generation of jazz crooners. "In A Soulful Mood" was originally recorded in 1956 in Hollywood for the legendary Bethlehem label. Torme's smooth, soft vocal timbre can be heard on this fantastic 14 track album.

Scott Joplin, the "King of Ragtime" music, was born near Linden, Texas on November 24, 1868. Although Joplin's music was popular and he received modest royalties during his lifetime, he did not receive recognition as a serious composer for more than fifty years after his death. Then, in 1973, his music was featured in the motion picture, The Sting, which won and Academy Award for its film score. Three years later, in 1976, Joplin's opera Treemonisha won the coveted Pulitzer Prize.
