Hard Bop, Cool Jazz | Label: Savoy Jazz, CY-78996 (COCY-78273)

Prior to the official formation of the Jazztet with trumpeter Art Farmer, trombonist Curtis Fuller and tenorman Benny Golson made several albums together, usually with other trumpeters. This somewhat rare date has trumpeter Thad Jones, bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Dave Bailey, and, most significantly, pianist McCoy Tyner in his recording debut completing the sextet. Fuller arranged all five of the songs, four of which were his originals. Although the material (other than the lone standard "Imagination") is unfamiliar, the chord changes inspire the players to create some fine solos. Easily recommended to hard bop fans lucky enough to find this album.

Hard Rock, Heavy Metal | Label: Polydor (Japan), POCP-2307

Heavy Metallized Hard Rock combo with Graham Bonnet on vocals and Yngwie Malmsteen on guitar was short lived but left a few albums, like this first one "No parole from Rock 'n' Roll", quite an interesting exercise of proto baroque metal. You can hear lots of Malmsteen's classical influences, but here those fit the feel of the album very naturally. Graham Bonnet's approach to vocals is also unique. Great album with no filler.

Vocall Jazz | Label: Audiophile Records, ACD 269

Joyce Breach is an highly underexposed New York artist whose albums for Audiophile represent the highest standards both in musicianship and taste. Ms Breach draws her material from the Broadway, jazz and cabaret repertoires; this particular album contains jewels by Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, and Berlin, to name a few. Vocally she is warm and totally natural; this deceptively casual style works extremely well on the dusky ballads she loves, revealing the amazing quality of the great songwriters. If you like Diana Krall or Jane Monheit, give a listen to Joyce and settle back to enjoy.

Roy Rogers is one of the most able slide guitarists performing today. All songs written by Roy Rogers except "Baby, Please Don't Go" (McKinley Morganfield), "Hellhound On My Trail", "Ramblin' Blues" (Robert Johnson), and the traditional "Black Cat Bone".

It's much more a classical album rather than jazz. A blend of original compositions and respectful reworkings of timeless classics from Bach, Bartok, Villalobos, Mompov, and Segovia, the collection -- which features stellar guest performances by opera star Renee Fleming, violinist Gil Shaham, and cellist Julian Lloyd-Webber -- finds Ritenour and Grusin joyously reconnecting with their rich classical roots.

EAC rip | FLAC image + cue + log + scans | 00:32:57 | 226 MB (3% rec.)
Progressive Rock | Label: One Way (US) / BMG, OW 35130

Styx is the self-titled debut album by an American rock band, released in 1972. Since then it was reissued under the title Styx I and with new artwork. The fact that the album includes such diverse fare as Copland's "Fanfare For The Common Man" & George Clinton's "After You Leave Me" alongside the original "Best Thing", seemingly indicates the the band had a taste for experimenting and an unknowing sense of humor that vanished during their stadium rock dynasty of the late '70s & early '80s.
