A group of kids grow up on the short, wrong -east- side of the Sonnenallee (Sun Alley) in Berlin, right next to one of the few border crossings between East and West reserved for German citizens. The antics of these kids, their families, of the "West German" friends and relatives who come to visit, and of the East German border guards, all serve to illustrate the absurdity of everyday life on the Sonnenallee, and therefore throughout the former East Germany.

The plot centres around three sisters, two of whom are happily married, or so it appears. The youngest sister is single and living with her cute older brother, whom she is desperately in love with. A second sister is married to a man who has another woman and child elsewhere whom he loves just as much as his wife -with a few conditions, she agrees to carry on with the marriage. The third sister and her husband are overjoyed to discover she is pregnant, and though he is tempted, her husband remains loyal to her.

During WWII, beautiful and urbane nurse Eliska is part of a secret resistance movement with her lover, surgeon Richard Littner. When he is discovered, Eliska is forced to leave the hospital in order to hide from the Nazis. Her colleague Dr. Chladek sends her off with mountain man Joza, who had been a patient in the hospital. Under the name Hana, Eliska travels with Joza to the tiny Moravian village of Zelary. They live in a modest cabin for two years, waiting for the Nazi occupation to end. Based on true events.

Traumatised by the separation from his wife, a philosophy teacher, Martin finds himself experiencing a mid-life crisis. When he learns that an ageing artist he met recently died whilst making love, he is intrigued and visits the artist’s studio. Here, he meets the artist’s model, a plump seventeen year old named Cécilia, who reveals that her former employer had an insatiable appetite for sex. Martin’s curiosity about the relationship between artist and model soon turns into obsession as he arranges a daily meeting with Cécilia in his apartment, where, in between having sex with her, he interrogates her about every detail of her life. Martin’s obsession intensifies and takes a dangerous turn when he discovers that Cécilia is dating another man...
