Duke Ellington - The Private Collection vol. 7
(disc 7 of 10: The Suites, New York 1968, 1970)
(First issued 1986, this issue: KAZ CD 507, 1996)
Jazz | EAC | FLAC, CUE, LOG | art | 330 Mb | RS

It blows your mind to think that this is the kind of stuff Ellington had in the vaults when he died. The Private Collection consists mainly of studio recordings Ellington produced at his own expense. The exceptions, volumes 9 and 10, are dance dates.
Duke called these sessions "the stockpile". The purpose of these recordings were more experimental than commercial. They enabled him to hear what he had written the previous night; to try out new pieces with his chief virtuosi.
Two of Duke's best longer compositions are here and nowhere else. The Degas Suite (the soundtrack to a movie about the painter) and The River (a ballet).
