Leroy Thompson, "British Paratroops in Action - Combat Troops".
Publisher: Squadron/Signal Publications | ISBN: 0897472330 | 1989 edition | PDF | 50 Pages | 12.84 MB

The Russians. Italians and Germans had experimented with parachute troops long before the British gave serious consideration to the formation of parachute units. The British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, was always interested in new techniques, especially those that would instill an aggressive spirit and take the war to the enemy. During June of 1940, he suggested that a corps of at least 5,000 parachute troops be formed to carry out commando style raids against the enemy. Initially, the concept was opposed by the Royal Air Force, which feared that such a force would put a drain on its severely limited resources of transport aircraft.

Rebecca Mead, "How the Vote Was Won: Woman Suffrage in the Western United States, 1868-1914".
Publisher: NYU Press | ISBN: 081475676X | 2004 edition | PDF | 296 Pages | 1.53 MB

By the end of 1914, almost every Western state and territory had enfranchised its female citizens in the greatest innovation in participatory democracy since Reconstruction. These Western successes stand in profound contrast to the East, where few women voted until after the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, and the South, where African-American men were systematically disenfranchised. How did the frontier West leap ahead of the rest of the nation in the enfranchisement of the majority of its citizens?

Tony Day, "Fluid Iron: State Formation in Southeast Asia".
Publisher: University of Hawaii Press | ISBN: 0824825071 | 2002 edition | PDF | 312 Pages | 2.09 MB

Fluid Iron is the first extended treatment of state formation in Southeast Asia from early to contemporary times and the first book-length analysis of Western historical and ethnographic writing on the region. It includes critical assessments of the work of Clifford Geertz, O. W. Wolters, Benedict Anderson, and other major scholars who have written on early, colonial, and modern Southeast Asian history and culture. Making use of the ideas of Weber, Marx, Foucault, and postmodern and postcolonial theory, Tony Day argues that culture must be restored to the study of Southeast Asian history so that the state and historical developments in the region can be returned to their own "alternative" historical contexts and trajectories.

John Elliott, "The Industrial Development of the Ebbw Valleys, 1780-1914".
Publisher: University of Wales Press | ISBN: 0708318908 | 2005 edition | PDF | 216 Pages | 1.60 MB

The historically neglected but unexpectedly remarkable Ebbw Valley, one of Wales's major coal-producing areas, is explored in this study. The valley’s substantial contributions to the genesis of the modern industrial world and to the understanding of industrial change are discussed. Innovative research, including the use of models from accountancy, marketing, and labor markets for interrogating and ordering data, reveals the elements that differentiate the Ebbw Valley from other industrial areas of Wales.
