Genre: Comedy | Romance

This superb BBC adaptation from 1980 zips along, thanks to lively performances, fluid direction, and a keen grasp of the wit of Austen's dialogue (expertly translated to the screen by British novelist Fay Weldon) and her satirical characters, who range from clever and kind to utterly odious. Due to its faithfulness and deep appreciation of the material, this five-episode miniseries stands up against any other film or television adaptation (at least nine to date), though Rintoul may not sets hearts aflutter the way Colin Firth did in the also excellent 1995 miniseries.

William Shakespeare, "Shakespeare's Sonnets" (The Arden Shakespeare, 3rd Edition)
Edited by Katherine Duncan-Jones
Thomas Nelson Publishers | 3rd Edition | 1997 | ISBN: 017443474X | 504 pages | siPDF | 8.6 MB

This Arden edition of Shakespeare's sonnets is closely based on the 1609 Quarto. As Katherine Duncan-Jones demonstrates, this text was authorized by Shakespeare himself, and may be based on an authorial manuscript. The whole carefully-ordered sequence, including "A Lover's Complaint", is read in the context of Shakespeare's career and of the poems' historical setting within early Jacobean culture. A clear-eyed analysis of homoerotic elements in the sonnets puts an end to the century of homophobic readings initiated by Sir Sidney Lee in 1897. Succinct and accessible notes guide the reader through complex vocabulary and syntax, as well as the poems' literary and cultural background. For ease of reference, these are printed on the same page-opening as the text.

For this updated edition of Twelfth Night, Penny Gay has written a wholly new Introduction to this well-loved Shakespearean comedy. She stresses the play's theatricality, its elaborate linguistic games and its complex use of Ovidian myths. She analyses the play's delicate balance between romance and realism and its exploration of gender, sexuality and identity. In examining the stage history, Professor Gay suggests that contemporary critical theory could have much to offer twenty-first-century directors and actors. An updated reading list completes the edition.

Basic Books | 2001 | ISBN: 0465023258 | 572 pages | siPDF | 11.2 MB

An acclaimed historian offers a radical new history of the links between politics and economics, one that draws unsettling conclusions about the future of both capitalism and democracy. Does money make the world go round, as Cabaret's Master of Ceremonies sang to us? In The Cash Nexus, acclaimed historian Niall Ferguson offers a radical and surprising answer—No. Ferguson thinks it is high time we re-examined the link between economics and politics, in the aftermath not only of the failure of socialism but also of the apparent triumph of American-style capitalism. His central argument is that the conflicting impulses of sex, violence, and power are together more powerful than money. In particular, political events and institutions have often dominated economic development.

Cumberland House Publishing | 1973, 1996 | ISBN: 1888952245 | 241 pages | siPDF | 5.4 MB

In every mystery Wolfe and his wry young operative and fellow detective Archie Goodwin sit down to an extraordinary meal prepared by Fritz Brenner, Wolfe's world-class personal chef. In response to readers who demanded recipes for the dishes, The Nero Wolfe Cookbook was created, in which the secrets of many of Brenner's recipes are revealed, such as Shad-Roe Mousse Pocahontas, Salad with Devil's Rain Dressing, Bread Triangles Fried in Anchovy Butter, and more than 200 others. The Nero Wolfe Cookbook is filled with one-of-a-kind, high-cuisine recipes spiced by quotes from memorable Nero Wolfe whodumts, as well as observations about Wolfe and food from the books. Forty-four photos recall New York in the 1930s, '40s, and '50s when the Empire State Building was new, art deco was the rage, and Wolfe and Goodwin were in their prime.

William Shakespeare, "The Taming of the Shrew" (The New Cambridge Shakespeare, Updated Edition)
Edited by Ann Thompson
Cambridge University Press | 2003 | ISBN: 0521532493 | 212 pages | siPDF | 5.6 MB

One of Shakespeare's most popular yet controversial plays, this edition of The Taming of the Shrew considers its reception in the light of the hostility and embarrassment it often arouses, taking account of both scholarly defences and modern feminist criticism of the play. For this updated edition Ann Thompson has added new sections to the Introduction which describe the 'deeply problematic' nature of debates about the play and its reception since the 1980s. She discusses recent editions and textual, performance and critical studies.
Atlantic Monthly Press | 2008 | ISBN: 0871139790 | 495 pages | siPDF | 9.3 MB

A sweeping narrative history of world trade—from Mesopotamia in 3000 B.C. to the firestorm over globalization today—that brilliantly explores trade's colorful and contentious past and provides new insights into its future. Lively, authoritative, and astonishing in scope, A Splendid Exchange is a riveting narrative that views trade and globalization not in political terms, but rather as an evolutionary process as old as war and religion—a historical constant—that will continue to foster the growth of intellectual capital, shrink the world, and propel the trajectory of the human species.

William Shakespeare, "The Merchant of Venice" (The New Cambridge Shakespeare, Updated Edition)
Cambridge University Press | 2003 | ISBN: 0521532515 | 216 pages | siPDF | 5.7 MB

The Merchant of Venice has been performed more often than any other comedy by Shakespeare. Molly Mahood pays special attention to the expectations of the play's first audience, and to our modern experience of seeing and hearing the play. In a substantial new addition to the Introduction, Charles Edelman focuses on the play's sexual politics and recent scholarship devoted to the position of Jews in Shakespeare's time. He surveys the international scope and diversity of theatrical interpretations of The Merchant in the 1980s and 1990s and their different ways of tackling the troubling figure of Shylock.

Doubleday | 2009 | ISBN: 0385509707 | 301 pages | siPDF | 6.8 MB

In the 1920s Los Angeles was the fastest growing city in the world, mad with oil fever, get-rich-quick schemes, celebrity scandals, and religious fervor. It was also rife with organized crime, with a mayor in the pocket of the syndicates and a DA taking bribes to throw trials. In A Bright and Guilty Place, Richard Rayner narrates the entwined lives of two men, Dave Clark and Leslie White, who were caught up in the crimes, murders, and swindles of the day. Over a few transformative years, as the boom times shaded into the Depression, the adventures of Clark and White would inspire pulp fiction and replace L.A.’s reckless optimism with a new cynicism. Key to the tale are the story of the theft of water from the Owens River Valley that let L.A. grow; the Teapot Dome scandal that brought shame to President Harding; and the emergence of crime writers like Raymond Chandler and James M. Cain, who helped mythologize L.A. In Rayner’s hands, the ballad of Dave Clark is the story of the coming of age of a great American city.

Sue Parrill, "Jane Austen on Film and Television: A Critical Study of the Adaptations"
McFarland & Company | 2002 | ISBN: 0786413492 | 229 pages | siPDF | 6.5 MB

This book traces the history of film and television adaptations (nearly 30 to date) of Jane Austen manuscripts, compares the adaptations to the manuscripts, compares the way different adaptations treat the novels, and analyzes the adaptations as examples of cinematic art. The first of seven chapters explains why the novels of Jane Austen have become a popular source of film and television adaptations. Each [following] chapter begins with a summary of the main events of the novel. Then a history of the adaptations is presented followed by an analysis of the unique qualities of each adaptation, a comparison of these adaptations to each other and to the novels on which they are based, and a reflection of relevant film and literary criticism as it applies to the adaptations.
