Business Communication Today
English | Prentice Hall; 9th edition edition (July 14, 2008) | 326 Pages | PDF | ISBN-10: 0136154174 | 54.4 Mb

As a university prof teaching ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and EAP (English for Academic Purposes) courses at undergraduate level, I regularly use texts that offer authentic language (English, not designed for english teching) from various fields to design study material, mostly from the technology and business sectors. While attending a conference in Singapore this winter I stumbled across this text and immediatelly recognised I had found a gem, but I had no idea how valuable it would become until later.

13 Things that Don't Make Sense: The Most Baffling Scientific Mysteries of Our Time (Vintage)
English | Publisher: Vintage; Reprint edition (August 11, 2009) | ISBN-10: 0307278816 | MP3 96Kbps | 494.15 MB

When we look to the "anomalies" that science can’t explain, we often discover where science is about to go. Here are a few of the anomalies that Michael Brooks investigates in 13 Things That Don’t Make Sense:
Homeopathic remedies seem to have biological effects that cannot be explained by chemistry
Gases have been detected on Mars that could only have come from carbon-based life forms
Cold fusion, theoretically impossible and discredited in the 1980s, seems to work in some modern laboratory experiments.

How Pleasure Works: The New Science of Why We Like What We Like
English | Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company; 1ST edition (June 14, 2010) | ISBN-10: 0393066320 | MP3 64Kbps | 192.79 MB

Bloom (Descartes' Baby), a psychology professor at Yale, explores pleasure from evolutionary and social perspectives, distancing himself from the subject's common association with the senses. By examining studies and anecdotes of pleasure-inducing activities like eating, art, sex, and shopping, Bloom posits that pleasure takes us closer to the essence of a thing, be it animal, vegetable, or mineral. He argues that humans seem to be hard-wired to give, as well as receive, pleasure.

In this engaging, enlightening, and anecdote-filled history, Michael Krondl, a noted chef turned writer and food historian, tells the story of three legendary cities–Venice, Lisbon, and Amsterdam–and how their single-minded pursuit of spice helped to make (and remake) the Western diet and set in motion the first great wave of globalization.

Joe Abercrombie - The Heroes
English | Publisher: Gollancz (January 27, 2011) | ASIN: B004JHY6OG | 512 pages | PDF | 7.94 MB

This blood-drenched, thought-provoking dissection of a three-day battle is set in the same world as Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy (The Blade Itself, etc.), but stands very well alone. Union commander Lord Marshal Kroy coordinates the fight with the aid of a motley group of incompetent, self-important officers. The strangely sympathetic Col. Bremer dan Gorst is officially a royal observer who nurses a burning desire to kill or be killed. Leading a much smaller army against the Union is Black Dow, whose grip on the throne of the Northmen is tenuous and based on fear and brutality. Calder, a slippery and cunning egotist, advocates peace while plotting to take Black Dow's place. Abercrombie never glosses over a moment of the madness, passion, and horror of war, nor the tribulations that turn ordinary people into the titular heroes.

You know all about the trouble with “mean girls” and competitive, judgmental women. Maybe you had a cruel high school experience straight out of the movie Carrie. Maybe you find yourself anxious because your daughter’s peers are excluding her. Maybe you’ve been harassed or marginalized by other females for being something they were or are not: fat, acne-prone, brainy, a different religion, too pretty, overconfident, a different kind of mother. Maybe you have a difficult female boss who is wreaking havoc on your ability to trust women in the workplace. And maybe you’ve shrugged it all off and figured: That’s just the way girls and women operate.
