“Although the great drummer Art Blakey took full control of the Messengers soon after, this 1955 live date features the original lineup, the one co-led by pianist Horace Silver. Filled out by trumpeter Kenny Dorham, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, and bassist Doug Watkins, the original Messengers recorded just one studio record (billed as Horace Silver & the Jazz Messengers), which quickly became the standard to beat in hard bop. Volume 1 of the Bohemia records shows them to be a versatile bunch capable of lightning-quick bop workouts, tender ballads, and deep, bluesy grooves. Dorham's trumpet work is especially vibrant; Silver's piano is an unmatched combination of funk and fire, and he also offers some marvelously clever accompaniment. Blakey, of course, steers from behind the skins. “The Silver Seas (formerly The Bees U.S.) are a rock and alternative band from Nashville, Tennessee, which formed when producer Jason Lehning met singer-songwriter Daniel Tashian, son of Barry and Holly Tashian. The band toured as an opening act for Guster in 2004 after the independent release of their debut album, Starry Gazey Pie. Their second album, High Society, was released in early 2006.On May 2, 2007, it was announced that The Bees U.S. had signed to Los Angeles-based Cheap Lullaby, and that the label intended to re-release High Society. Copyright issues, namely that a UK band was already using 'The Bees', forced the band to change their name, and they rechristened themselves The Silver Seas. Under this new name, their label released High Society on October 9, 2007.”

“The Dirty Heads comfortably combine hip-hop and reggae with somewhat lesser dollops of conventional rock songwriting and arrangements on Any Port in a Storm. While those are the three main styles the group blend, they don't always use all three idioms in the same song, some tracks coming close to being straight hip-hop, reggae, and/or rock. Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan are even referenced in "Believe." It's an unusual mixture, but more clever than exciting, without standout tunes or lyrics. Topics for the latter include statements of mild musical and social outsiderdom, declarations of pride for sticking to their principles, and the occasional nod to romance. A fair amount of profanity is used, but hardly in an aggressive manner, almost as if it's running a little counter to their generally upbeat natures.
