| “ | The myths of the Norse come to life in composer Al Conti's new recording. Northern Seas is Conti's fourth album and contains eleven original New Age/World-fusion pieces that draw on ancient Norse mythology while weaving in modern sensibilities. As with his previous award-winning album, Scheherazade, Conti has taken well-known tales, this time from the mystical lands of the north that originated during Scandinavia's Viking Age, and woven music around themes and images. By combining ancient and exotic instruments (kantele, Jew's harp, hurdy gurdy, pump organ, accordion, and tribal drums) with modern ones (piano, violin, cello and both acoustic and electric guitar), Conti has created a mythical landscape that will carry the listener to another time and place, one cloaked in veils of mist when the gods ruled over harsh Nordic lands. | ” |
| “ | Planet Mu present the debut album of pastoral electronica from Solar Bears. Their 'Inner Sunshine' 12" gave us a sweet taste of what to expect, and the full deal is a very pleasant experience, crossing untangled lines between IDM, folktronica, pastoral kosmische and soundtracky synth music. Their music calls to mind everyone from Emeralds and OPN to Bibio or Morricone, but with an unpretentiousness, naive, and intuitive feel to their melodic arrangements. There's a seam of new age soul to 'Twin Stars', while the flourish of desert guitars over 'She Was Coloured In' justifies the Morricone comparison. 'Primary Colours At The Back Of My Mind' meanwhile conjures imagery of rolling green hills and that, whereas 'Hidden Lake' glistens with the buttery finish of a Bibio record. 'Head Supernova' is about the best you'll find here, like a holistic version of Emeralds with a tripped out agenda. Lush. | ” |
| “ | Orange Mountain Music presents Philip Glass second violin concerto, subtitled The American Four Seasons, performed by violinist Robert McDuffie accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Marin Alsop. This live performance was captured on the occasion of the UK premiere of the work in the spring of 2010. The concerto is in four movements, with each movement preceded by a piece for solo violin comprised of a prologue and three songs. The strings-only orchestra is complemented by a synthesizer producing a sound palette that harkens back to the Philip Glass of the 1970s. The American Four Seasons was commissioned by McDuffie to act as a companion piece to Vivaldi s Four Seasons concertos, which are among the most performed and recorded works in the history of music. | ” |
| “ | A recording of the acclaimed Portland Opera production of Philip Glass' take on Jean Cocteau's 1949 film, Orphée, presented as a full soundtrack recording by Orange Mountain Music. "Based on Cocteau's fascinating retelling of the Orpheus myth, Orphée, the first opera of Philip Glass' Cocteau Trilogy, is an extended parable on the life of an artist, a poet harassed and misunderstood by peers." | ” |
| “ | "The pieces featured on EARTHLIGHT are purely synthesizer-based, with sounds created from the ground up, from the inside out. The pieces were recorded in nearly real-time; the direct emotions and artistry were not lost in a realm of too many choices. The release features David's arching, cloud-like atmospheres combined with subtle percolating electronic percussion and buoyant rhythmic patterns. The delicate quality stands out, blending perfectly with the atmospherics. This release stands among my favorite releases this year, and is highly recommended." — review by Steve Roach | ” |
| “ | Digitally remastered two CD set containing a trio of albums from this Soul/R&B act, an offshoot of The Isley Brothers. Broadway's Closer To Sunset Boulevard (1985) boasted the Top 14 R&B smash 'Look The Other Way', as well as favourites 'Serve You Right' and the samba tinged 'I Can't Get Over Losin' You'. Caravan Of Love (1985) had a title track that topped the R&B charts and was an international smash that would also later be covered by The Housemartins. Different Drummer, the third and final album from the second generation of Isleys, issued in 1987 and as the previous albums, all songs were written, arrange, produced and performed by Ernie Isley, Chris Jasper and Marvin Isley. | ” |
| “ | It's extremely rare and newly discovered Bob Dylan live concert CD, features a gig from May 10, 1963 at Brandeis University’s first annual folk festival. | ” |
| “ | Inspired by the exotic astrophysical phenomena of the 10th planet. A mixture of masterful, spooky alien soundscapes and fluid textures. | ” |
| “ | Three heavyweights of the dubstep scene - Scream, Benga and Artwork - team up for this debut album. Hybridizing the crushing bass pressure of dubstep with surprisingly accessible pop-RnB song structures, and featuring a number of guest vocalists including Ms. Dynamite and John Legend, this promises to be a crossover smash. Includes the singles 'I Need Air' and 'Perfect Stranger' and, in this special edition, a bonus disc featuring five additional tracks. | ” |
| “ | A mixture of masterful, spooky alien soundscapes and fluid textures by one of ambient music premier electro-tribal sound designers. | ” |
| “ | Dubbed by Gilles Peterson as the best rare grooves compilation series of all time, Strange Games and Funky Things returns with the fifth volume (it's been 14 years since BBE's Peter Adarkwah conceived and launched the series), which offers classic dancefloor-ready tracks ("War Is Coming! War Is Coming!") alongside lesser-known world music gems ("Asafo Beesuon/ Obaa Yaa Aye Me Bone" by C.K. Mann & His Carousel 7). Definitely one of the strongest comps in the series. Recommended. | ” |
| “ | Seattles Jeff Greinke is considered by many to be one of the great talents in the ambient/experimental music scene. His career has progressed from early experimentalism, through his mid-period ambience and fourth-world atmospherics, to his recent work in a loop-oriented world/jazz/ambient hybrid style. The one release of Greinkes most often mentioned by fans of his work is 1992s Lost Terrain, originally released on Silent Records. With a sound that ranges from an austere minimalism reminiscent of Budd and Eno, to strange, surreal soundworlds uniquely Greinkes own, Terrain showcases all that is strong and unique about Greinkes work. Out of print for several years, this crucial mid-period release is now available again, digitally remastered and repackaged, from Hypnos Recordings. | ” |
| “ | Like the greatest works by Syd Barrett, Brian Wilson, Pere Ubu and Captain Beefheart, this album delights in wild juxtapositions of mood. It contrasts jarring dissonance with sugary twee pop moments, primal scream therapy and John Lennon-on-helium warped classicism. It’s a rollercoaster ride through the history of post-Beatles pop that sideswipes the avant garde and summersaults into a no-man’s land of music yet to be pigeonholed. | ” |
