Two friends compete for the affections of the same man in this romantic drama from Canada. Marie (Monia Chokri) is a woman living in Montreal who has frequently been let down in her relationships with men, while her close friend Francis (Xavier Dolan) is a gay man who hasn't been faring much better in his love life. When Marie meets Nicolas (Niels Schneider), a good-looking man who is new in town, she's immediately attracted to him and tries to use her feminine allure to win him over. However, Francis is equally drawn to Nicolas, and the new man hasn't revealed his sexual preferences strongly enough for either Marie or Francis to be certain where they stand. The two friends each begin taking bolder steps in hopes of earning Nicolas' attention until their rivalry threatens to destroy their friendship. Heartbeats (aka Les Amours Imaginaires) was directed, written, and edited by Xavier Dolan, who also co-stars as Francis; the film was an official selection at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

The Scarlet Letter is a 2004 South Korean film about a police detective who investigates a murder case while struggling to hang onto his relationships with his wife and mistress. The film debuted as the closing film of the Pusan International Film Festival in 2004. It is the second film by La Femis-graduate and academic Byun Hyuk (Daniel Byun), and starred Han Suk-kyu, Lee Eun-ju, Sung Hyun-ah and Uhm Ji-won.

Despite Lee Eun-ju's prior experience with depicting sex and nudity in Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors (2000), she came under the scrutiny of Korean press and netizens, for the (highly emotional) sex scenes and the notorious "trunk scene" in The Scarlet Letter. It is speculated her demanding role and its public scrutiny, had compounded and overlapped with an existing variety of family, financial, and career issues. Her severe depression ended in suicide in February 2005, and the tragic conclusion has since become the central focus in popular perception and interpretation of the film, this particular one being her last.

Director Kim Ki-duk, no stranger to controversy over his own films, is quoted by Chinese film magazine "Movie Watch" (看電影) in singling out The Scarlet Letter as among the key Korean dramas from recent years. He subsequently cast Sung Hyun-ah, who rose to prominence with her role in The Scarlet Letter, as the heroine in his Time.

The jurors: a racist taxi-driver, a suspicious doctor, a vacillating TV producer, a Holocaust survivor, a flamboyant musician, a cemetery manager, and others represent the fragmented society of modern day Russia. A stray bird (a touch of New Age cinema) is flying above the jurors' heads, alluding to tolerance.

The life of Nick Keller can hardly be called well sorted. He stumbles from one temporary employment to the next and he has very serious problems with Heinrich, his rich and influential stepfather, as well as with his brother Viktor. Nick’s latest temporary job is as a cleaner in a psychiatric clinic, where he prevents the notorious barefooted patient Leila from committing suicide. Leila’s story is also complex. The first nineteen years of her life she had been confined at home by her mother. She has been hospitalized into the clinic after the death of her mother, but is desperate to leave. However mentally Leila is still a child, for example, everything that she is told she takes literally, and she dislikes physical contact with strangers. The unexpected consequence of Nick’s act is that Leila follows her saviour secretly, in her nightdress and once again barefooted, and appears in front of his door at night-time.

As Leila constantly refuses go back to the clinic, she and Nick go on a road trip together in order to attend his brother’s wedding to Nick's ex-girlfriend. During the trip the relationship between the two deepens significantly. However, after serious disputes with his family Nick once again tries to hospitalize Leila. Thereby he has to confess to himself that he has fallen in love with Leila.

Nick is then arrested fo attempted kidnapping and Leila is brought back into the clinic. Nick pretends to have mental problems so he too can go into the clinic with Leila, but only after Leila once again attempts suicide does her doctor admit him. The last scene shows them both together shopping in a supermarket, some months later, having both been released from the clinic.
