If there's a curse on reformed punk band Blondie, then their second reunion album sure doesn't suffer from it. "Curse of Blondie" manages the unique quality that most reunion albums lack: It makes us think of their older stuff, while still having fresh, new material.

The 52nd Street Blues Project: Blues & Grass (2004)
SACD EAC REDBOOK RIP (Secure Mode) | FLAC + LOG + CUE | Scans | 274,1 MB | RS
Label: Chesky Records SACD286 | Genre: Blues

James Blood Ulmer has been on a something of a roll since the late '90s, after reuniting with longtime cohort Charlie Burnham and delving into the blues. The two Vernon Reid-produced blues albums were among the best of his career, with Ulmer adding his harmolodic shadings to classics from the blues canon. The 52nd Street Blues Project is a stripped-down offshoot of those albums, but they operate as a band instead of simply supporting Ulmer. Along with Ulmer and Burnham are Blood's rhythm section -- Aubrey Dayle (drums) and Mark Peterson (bass) -- and vocalist Queen Esther, all veterans of Blood's blues albums.

Label: Elektra/Rhino R2 79287 | Genre: Reggae

Although the group's first three albums are generally considered their finest, there is a very strong case to be made for including Steel Pulse's Elektra debut in their core collection as well. Where Reggae Fever had found the band moving from hardcore Rasta politics into lover's rock and party anthems, True Democracy marks a return to more ideological subject matter; the cover art, which shows singer David Hinds reading the Bible to his rapt bandmates, is a dead giveaway.

It appears that Eric Clapton had more Robert Johnson in his blood than he thought -- or perhaps it was planned this way. This DVD/CD set (and really, it's not the other way around despite the packaging), showcases Clapton mining the Robert Johnson vein ever more deeply in no less than four different settings.

Archive: Controlling Crowds Part IV (2009)
EAC rip (Secure Mode) | FLAC + LOG + CUE | 279,8 MB | RS | 3% recovery
Label: Warner Music France | Genre: Pop/Rock, Electronic, Trip-Hop

When Archive entered the Swiss Top Ten, it obviously wasn't because of their novelty factor, because Controlling Crowds is an exploration of the trip-hop sound developed in Bristol over a decade prior (and, admittedly, explored by this London-based band since the mid-‘90s). That said, it is an intriguing, if slightly patchy, record densely packed with music that may not necessary control crowds, but does a good job of hypnotizing the occasional individual listener.

The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads (2004)

Although most people probably think the only Talking Heads live release is Stop Making Sense, the fact is that there's an earlier, better live album called The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads. Originally released in 1982 on LP and cassette, the album chronicles the growth of the band, both stylistically and personnel-wise.

Talking Heads: 12 X 12 Original Remixes (1999)
EAC rip (Secure Mode) | FLAC + LOG + CUE | 300 DPI Scans | 489,2 MB + 17,4 MB | RS | 3% recovery
Label: EMI 7243 5 21856 2 7 | Genre: Pop/Rock

Although "Houses in Motion" (from Remain in Light) was released in an extended version, Talking Heads didn't start dabbling in extended remixes until Speaking in Tongues, which had some brilliant remixed B-sides. Remixed, however, only includes tunes from their final three albums: Little Creatures, True Stories, and Naked, arguably Talking Heads' least experimental albums. Some of these versions stick pretty close to the originals, others get more creative, but ultimately this release is intended for collectors and fans who missed out on these the first time around. Material: One Down (1982)
EAC rip (Secure Mode) | FLAC + LOG + CUE | Complete 300 DPI Scans | 316,7 MB + 11,1 MB | RS | 3% recovery
Label: Celluloid NY 5504 | Genre: Pop/Rock

One Down marked a distinct shift in sound for Material, the avant-garde downtown pickup group organized around bassist Bill Laswell and keyboardist Michael Beinhorn. The edgy experimentalism that characterized earlier efforts like Temporary Music and Memory Serves is downplayed here in favor of funk and disco tunes delivered with a minimum of weirdness. Sure, it sounds dated but that doesn't make it less attractive. Laswell is a master of funk bass, and with guests like drummer Yogi Horton, guitarist Nile Rodgers and singers Nona Hendryx and Whitney Houston (just before she became a superstar on her own), he didn't really have much chance to go wrong. Highlights include"Take a Chance" and the strutting "I'm the One"; if you want something a little more challenging, check out Archie Shepp's squalling sax solo on the Houston vehicle "Memories." This is straight-ahead turn-of-the-80s funk at its old-fashioned best from the folks you'd have least suspected of harboring such sympathies. AMG Review by Rick Anderson

Material: Temporary Music (1979-1981) (1992)
EAC rip (Secure Mode) | FLAC + LOG + CUE | Complete 300 DPI Scans | 384,9 MB + 28,2 MB | RS | 3% recovery

If you like "Memory Serves" or any of the earlier Material projects, you'll definitely dig this compilation of recordings from their earliest period. You can hear the disparate elements that fused together to make Material one of the most unique collectives in music.

Bill Laswell proves quite the ringleader here with his darting/slithery bass (check out "Discourse", and doubly cool is Bill Bacon's busy, yet grooving drumming, whatever became of him?). His core cohorts Michael Beinhorn (tapes/synths/vocals.found sounds) and guitarist Cliff Cultreri along with a varied cast create music that is indeed very forwrd thinking, more times than not, danceable and genuinely experimental without going so far out in the ozone that you lose interest. Ominous rockers ("Slow Murder", "Detached") dance uneasily with avant-funk workouts ("Discourse", "Ciquiri", I'll NEVER be able to get that "This dance is no white man's business" chant out of my head!)and industrial sounds in ways that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
