Label: Pressure Sounds PS 39| Genre: Reggae/Dub

If any one individual can be credited with being the catalyst for English reggae and dub then Dennis Bovell is that man: from the mid seventies onwards he has been at the centre of the English reggae scene. Pressure Sounds have now gathered sixteen of his must have rare dubs and instrumentals as well as a couple of outstanding vocal tracks on one essential album.

'Decibel' brings together some of his heaviest productions out for the first time since their original release in the mid-seventies on Dennis' 'Rama' and 'More Cut' labels. Dennis produced many dub plates and specials that have never been heard outside of Sound System dances and several of these dubs are also featured on 'Decibel'.

Burning Spear: Chant Down Babylon (The Island Anthology) (1996)

Label: Island 524 190-2 | Genre: Reggae

Between 1975 and 1978, while he was on Island, Burning Spear, aka Winston Rodney, recorded his classic albums. The combination of Spear and producer Jack Ruby seem unstoppable, bringing forth heavy, spiritual reggae and some wicked dub, making him one of the most influential reggae figures of the period. Chant Down Babylon cherry-picks the best from his six records for Island, and two CDs is barely enough to contain it, with gems like "Slavery Days," "Man in the Hills," "Mek We Dweet," and "Social Living." As an introduction to the man at his very best, this can't be beat. Chris Nickson @ amazon

Black Uhuru: Complete Anthem Sessions (Ltd Edition 4 CD Box) (2004)
4 X CD EAC rip (Secure) | FLAC + LOG + CUE | 300 DPI Scans | 1,62 GB + 22,3 MB | RS | 3% recovery
Label: Hip-O Select/Island/Universal| Genre: Reggae

Anthem is the sound of Black Uhuru conquering the world. Back in the days of black vinyl records, reggae bands had to trim their groove to fit the grooves. So it was with Black Uhuru's legendary album, which just had too much dubwise goodness to fit on a single LP. When the non-LP single Solidarity began to connect at radio, the label had the album remixed and rush-re-released: one version for the UK and one for the US. We gathered all the versions, plundered the vaults for some amazing bonus tracks, and put it all in a beautiful bound book with four discs, rare photos and the complete story behind the first reggae album ever to win a Grammy®. Disc One contains the original full length mixes of the Anthem album, plus both sides of the Party Next Door/Party In Session 12-inch. Disc Two features the original dub mixes of the album; all seven tracks are previously unreleased. Disc Three, the UK remix version of the album, also contains both sides of the What Is Life / Solidarity / Party Next Door 12-inch. Disc Four is the US remix version of Anthem, plus two previously unreleased mixes of Somebody's Watching You. I and I dig it. We think you will, too. (amazon product description)

Linton Kwesi Johnson: Independant Intavenshan (The Island Anthology) (1998)
2 X CD EAC rip | FLAC + LOG + CUE | 300 DPI Scans | 468,3 MB + 412,3 MB + 14,2 MB | RS | 3% recovery
Label: Island 524 575-2 | Genre: Reggae

The fact that 1998's highest-ranking reggae album is a reissue speaks more to the power of dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson than to the weak crop of contemporary reggae artists. Independent Intavenshan is a two-fisted blast of LKJ's smoldering patois poems backed by the liquid rhythms of Dennis Bovell's Dub Band. Including all four of LKJ's Island albums--Forces of Victory, Bass Culture, LKJ in Dub, and Making History--Intavenshan is a timeless, literate, and politically charged document. --S. Duda @ amazon

Lee Scratch Perry: Panic In Babylon (2006 w/ Bonus Remixes CD)

Label: Narnack Records NCK7037| Genre: Reggae

Yes, he's a genius, and yes, he's probably certifiably nuts, and yes, that combination of genius and insanity has now yielded several decades of absolutely brilliant (if notoriously inconsistent) music. And yes again, it's true that most of what has come out under his name in the last seven or eight years has been a big disappointment. But the latest album from Lee "Scratch" Perry is a brilliant return to form. On Panic in Babylon he's teamed up with the White Belly Rats, a Swiss reggae band with an uncommon ability to simultaneously stir up rich, dense reggae grooves and put the focus squarely on Perry and his sometimes incoherent, sometimes brilliant, sometimes hilarious ravings.

Label: RAS | Genre: Reggae

I have never understood why Don Carlos, both in his collaborations with Gold and alone, has not gotten more recognition as one of the most hypnotic, fluid, absolutely kick-___ reggae singers. He can be simultaneously embracing and menacing. This album is superb, with a beautiful balance and mixing -- fantastic harmonies from Gold, too. I was a reggae radio d.j. for 7 years, and I kid you not. You will not regret buying this album.

Simple Minds: New Gold Dream (1982/2005)
DVD9 ISO + INI | NTSC Region 0 96/24 5.1 MLP, DTS 5.1, 96/24 2.0 LPCM | 36 X 200 MB + 1 X 26,9 MB

Genre: Pop/Rock | Label: EMI

One of Scotland's finest imports, Simple Minds deliver a strong synth-reared release on New Gold Dream. This album harks the darker side of the band's musicianship, and such material alludes to their forthcoming pop-stadium sound which hurled them into rock mainstream during the latter part of the '80s.

Edgar Winter: Jasmine Nightdreams (1975/1997)
Retail DTS CD (cue + bin) | 44/20 5.1 DTS | 4 x 99 MB + 1 X 19,2 MB| RS | 3% recovery
Genre: Pop/Rock, Album Rock | Label: DTS Entertainment

Not since his debut, Entrance, had Edgar Winter appeared in a solo capacity. This time out, he reverts to his heavy jazz and gospel influences to produce an album that merits much more attention than what it ultimately received. Winter is decidedly laid-back on tracks such as "Hello Mellow Feelin'" and "Tell Me in a Whisper," which serve as the finest of the nine tracks here. Winter puts on his party hat once again with the rocking "Out of Control," the final track on a pretty nice little rock & roll document.

Stephen Stills: Stills (1975/1997)
Retail DTS CD (cue + wav) | 44/20 5.1 DTS | 3 x 99 MB + 1 X 57,2 MB| RS | 3% recovery
Genre: Pop/Rock, Folk-Rock | Label: DTS Entertainment

On his first album for Columbia Records, Stephen Stills reached into his songwriting past, wrote a few new ditties, and borrowed a tune from an old friend. It was released at a time when Stills' addictive behaviour was toned down, after the break-up of the seminal Stills' band Manassas, and before either his misguided reunion with Neil Young (The Stills-Young Band) or excellent reunion with Crosby and Nash (CSN). The result is an engaging and ecclectic collection of songs from a man confident in his past accomplishments but uncertain of where his musical future might lay.
