James "Blood" Ulmer: Harmolodic Guitar With Strings (1993)
EAC rip | FLAC + LOG + CUE | Scans | 254,9 MB | RS | 3% recovery
Label: DIW-878 | Genre: Jazz/Avant-Garde/Free Funk

Harmolodic guitarist James Blood Ulmer extends his own musical vocabulary by using a string quartet to feature his first notated harmolodic compositions. This is not a jazz or classical string quartet but a harmolodic string quartet. Briefly, the system developed by Ornette Coleman and later extended by Ulmer reveals the possibilities for all members of an ensemble to play with equal weight; there is no tonal, melodic, or rhythmic hierarchy. These compositions work that way -- the string quartet doesn't merely back Ulmer. There are five compositions on the disc: three of them are written in movements, and another is a complete reconstruction of Tales of Captain Black.

Genre: Goth Rock, Hard Rock, Prog Metal | Label: Century Media

Many fans of prog metal would like to believe that once upon a time, the dramatic mood and operatic self-importance that define the genre came as a natural result of the music's compositional influences, and only recently has the over-the-top tone taken priority over musical quality. Whether or not such a magical time ever really existed, Lacuna Coil hearkens back to those possibly imaginary days with their 2006 release Karmacode.

Genre: Pop/Vocal | Label: DTS Entertainment

When the Polyphonic Spree first appeared in 2000, the Dallas symphonic pop group was as much a band as a "happening," in the 1960s sense of the word. The Spree's two dozen members took the stage in flowing robes of snowy white, an appropriate backdrop for their happy and uplifting blend of pop, orchestral rock, and minimal touches of gospel. The costumes changed over the years, but the Polyphonic Spree's message remained consistent, drawing comparisons to the Flaming Lips and the Beach Boys with a smidgen of lively Godspell-like attitude thrown into the mix.

As implausible as it seems now, back in 1994, three scruffy heavy-metal fans from Belfast were tipped to take over Nirvana's crown. Therapy? had hit upon a genuinely thrilling mash-up of punk, metal, speed, volume, pop and lyrics of pure Rockney: try "Masturbation saved my life" or "I know how Jeffrey Dahmer feels--lonely, lonely" on your pencil-case and see what Amanda in Personnel says. Troublegum was the band's mighty peak: "Screamager" rolls its sleeves up and gets on with the business of punching you repeatedly in the face with the power of rock; "Stop It You're Killing Me" has a triumvirate of power-chords that could stop Metallica in their steps, and by the time "Unrequited"'s thrown in its arse-kicking jazz time-signature and a minute of pure screaming--you'll be rejecting solids for a week. Steven Wilson is not a man to rest on his laurels -- like his similarly disposed No-Man partner Tim Bowness, Wilson isn't content to let one group or project be the sum of his musical work. Starting in 1994, Wilson began solo recordings described as "experiments in texture," resulting in his work under the name Bass Communion. Eschewing synths and keyboards, Wilson, in this guise, works with sampled live performances of a variety of instruments, sometimes with the help of other musicians like Robert Fripp, to create a series of fine ambient/electronic pieces.

This adventurous co-op quartet consists of George Adams on tenor, soprano and flute, guitarist James Blood Ulmer, bassist Sirone and drummer Rashied Ali; it is not at all surprising that the results would never pass as "easy-listening." The performances dispense quickly with the opening themes except as abstract reminders of the orignal moods and emphasize both solo and group improvisations. Adams has his ferocious moments and Ulmer makes the ensembles quite crowded and intense (he also plays some flute during a couple of the melody statements) while bassist Sirone and drummer Ali keep the group interactions quite stimulating. After a slow start, the fiery sounds result in some memorable music. AMG Review by Scott Yanow
