In 2002, the original lineup of the Blasters -- vocalist and guitarist Phil Alvin, guitarist Dave Alvin, drummer Bill Bateman, and bassist John Bazz -- reunited to play a few shows to celebrate the release of a retrospective compilation of their recordings for Slash Records. In the grand tradition of giving the public what they want, a year after the original set of five shows had come and gone the reunited Blasters were still playing gigs for their loyal fans, and when Dave Alvin decided to pull the plug on the reunion in August of 2003, he did so in style with a special gig featuring a handful of special guests -- Chicago blues harp master Billy Boy Arnold, rockabilly legend Sonny Burgess, and members of two classic L.A. doo wop groups, the Calvanes and the Medallions.

The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor. Musically, it's arguably even more impressive, showcasing the group's interplay and David Gilmour's solos in particular. Although she was born in Louisiana, Ida Guillory has been the reigning zydeco player on the west coast thanks to the fact that she moved to San Francisco as a teenager. Although she didn't seriously take up the accordion until middle age, Ida's star rose quickly, partly due to the fact that she is the only woman performer in what up until her appearance was a genre dominated by men. Recorded in 1989, this is her finest album, showing off her aggressive, fun-loving approach to what she lovingly refers to as "Chanky Chank" music. This new release by James "Blood" Ulmer is a continuation of the direction he's been on with his last several releases (and even back to his fine albums in the 80's),except his fine solo release,which took a left turn into deep blues/spiritual material. Along with Ulmer-guitar,flute and vocals,the trio heard here consists of Mark Peterson-electric and acoustic bass,and Aubrey Dayle-drums. All the songs were written by James Ulmer,and the album was recorded in Germany,in 2008. Why we're getting to hear these tracks only now is a mystery-but better late than never,especially for someone like Ulmer,who records sparingly.

The 21st album from Ulmer, who was working here with new arrangements of material, a new lineup for the Blues Experience (with bassist Amin Ali returning and drummer Aubrey Dayle replacing Grant Calvin Weston) and a brand-new 24-bit digital recording system based around a Mac Quadra hard disc recording system. Engineer Winnie Leyh's live mix to two-track is outstanding, and the performances are very fine indeed. Ulmer's vocal style is engagingly rough and heartfelt, pure blues all the way; this provides an effective contrast to his convoluted guitar work (and the band's support). Ulmer's guitar work is outstanding, transcending the blues label and heading for the outer territories of jazz at quite a rate of knots. AMG Review by Steven McDonald
