Scientific and Technological Thinking
Publisher: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates | ISBN: 0805845291 | edition 2004 | PDF | 379 pages | 19,5 mb

At the turn of the 21st century, the most valuable commodity in society is knowledge--particularly new knowledge that may give a culture, company, or laboratory an adaptive advantage. Knowledge about the cognitive processes that lead to discovery and invention can enhance the probability of making valuable new discoveries and inventions. Such knowledge needs to be made widely available to ensure that no particular interest group "corners the market" on techno-scientific creativity. Knowledge can also facilitate the development of business strategies and social policies based on a genuine understanding of the creative process. Furthermore, through an understanding of principles underlying the cognitive processes related to discovery, educators can utilize these principles to teach students effective problem-solving strategies as part of their education as future scientists.

Microsoft SharePoint 2003 Unleashed
Publisher: Sams | ISBN: 0672328038 | edition 2005 | CHM | 816 pages | 30 mb

As businesses attempt to maximize every employee hour, knowledge management and collaboration tools have become more popular. SharePoint Portal Server 2003 offers businesses a secure enterprise portal solution for knowledge management, document sharing, and user collaboration. Built as a hub for the Office 2003 desktop, SharePoint makes it easy for users to get information, work together, and make smarter, faster business decisions. Because the adoption of the 2001 version of the server was slow, Microsoft built the need for SharePoint into the new Office 2003 applications. For instance, using FrontPage 2003 without SharePoint Portal Server 2003 allows only 60-70% of FrontPage functionality. The power of SPS 2003 allows users to create and manage robust, easy-to-build Web sites for collaboration on documents, projects and tasks, and allows these sites to be leveraged throughout the organization. Features such as document versioning, approval workflow, document profiling, and publishing help improve information flow. Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Unleashed fills the void readers have been looking for in previous books on the topic with a complete reference written by experts with valuable experience with enterprise-level solution design and implementation.

Fiber Bragg Gratings (Optics and Photonics)
Publisher: Academic Press | ISBN: 0124005608 | edition 1999 | PDF | 478 pages | 28,5 mb

Optical fibers have revolutionized telecommunication, becoming the most widely used and the most efficient device for relaying information over long distances. While the market for optical fiber continues to grow, the next stage in the field of communication is the mass delivery of integrated services, such as home banking, shopping, internet services, and entertainment using video on demand. The economies and performance potential will determine the type of technology likely to succeed in the provision of these services. But it is already clear that optical fibers will play a crucial role in communication systems of the future. The opportunities provided by fiber Bragg gratings are of enormous importance for the further development of the fiber optic communication lines as cost-effective and efficient devices of the future.

Clinical Medicine: with STUDENT CONSULT Access
Publisher: Saunders | ISBN: 0702027634 | edition 2005 | CHM | 1528 pages | 14,3 mb

The book alone is worth the money but you get more than this when you purchase it. You get free on line access to the full text through http://www.studentconsult.com/ and this is marvellous. This facility can be accessed through any Internet enabled computer and is dead easy to use. Navigation is easy as is searching and the whole book is there. Also thrown are animations of practical procedures, a drug database, cardiac and breathing sounds. These are nice little extras but it is having the book online and freely accessible (being built into the purchase price) is the big boon.
I have seen this book mature over the editions and the latest incarnation does the lineage proud. This is one of a select few books that deserves to be in most doctors' personal possession and it's as simple as that. Clinical medicine impacts on every aspect of medicine and so most doctors in most specialties should have one general medical textbook in their possession and this one certainly fits the bill. This is primarily a British textbook with a wide range of contributors. However there is also an international advisory panel which gives this book global appeal and it is good to see a British textbook still slugging it out with the big guns. This is a big book and is over 1500 pages and despite being a paperback, it can survive the ravages of regular use. The depth of coverage is superb and will certainly help the majority of users from general clinicians to all the specialties. It will make a superb reference source as well.

Optical Switching
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 0387261419 | edition 2006| PDF | 454 pages | 30,2 mb

Optical Switching is the most comprehensive and up to date reference book on its subject. After three decades of research and development efforts, optical switching has started to be deployed in cutting-edge networking initiatives. The optical devices, optical networks, and telecommunications/data networking communities are in need of a reference book that compiles diverse optical switching research, from device technologies to system and network architectures, into one properly structured volume. This book provides such a service to these communities.
The book is structured into three parts. The first part provides the foundation for understanding the potential role of optical switching in communication networks. The second part is focused on optical switching technologies and on devices based upon them. Theories, operation principles, and fabrication techniques are discussed. The third part covers optical-switching fabrics, systems, and networks. Applications of optical switching in communication networks are discussed, involving optical circuit, packet, and burst switching.

Physics Modeling for Game Programmers
Publisher: Course Technology PTR | ISBN: 1592000932 | edition 2004 | PDF | 544 pages | 47,8 mb

Physics Modeling for Game Programmers demystifies the variety of physical models on the forefront of the next major revolution in game development that will add photo-realism to games: Sound, Wave Motion, Light, Fluids, Fabrics, and Solids. The book covers high-level material while making it accessible to a wide range of readers. Each subject covered includes illustrations and fun, visual examples. The code is simple and comprehensible, but the effects it produces are stunning. Programmers who want to include 3D math and physics in a game have to wade through physics textbooks and dreary tomes on linear algebra and group theory, only to find that the material is too abstract to be used directly in their games. This book gives readers the skills they want and need to incorporate real physics into their games. As they work through the book, they will constantly develop tools, demos and working games. The highly graphical demos ensure that, instead of just reading about how to calculuate a trajectory of a a projectile, the reader will actually see a canon firing rouns toward the front lines.

Mesh-based Survivable Transport Networks
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR | ISBN: 013494576X | edition 2003 | PDF | 784 pages | 29,5 mb

Mesh-based survivability offers many advantages, but the research, educational and perational communications communities need to absorb new concepts and ideas about network operation; letting the network self-organize its own logical configuration for example. Operators also need to understand, evaluate and adopt new methods and models for network design and planning. This book is designed to contribute to enabling this evolution towards mesh-based survivable networking.
