Numerical Treatment of Partial Differential Equations
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540715827 | edition 2007 | PDF | 601 pages | 14,7 mb

This book deals with discretization techniques for elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic partial differential equations. It provides an introduction to the main principles of discretizations and presents to the reader the ideas and analysis of advanced numerical methods in this area.
It is the authors' aim to give mathematically-inclined students, scientists and engineers a textbook that contains all the basic discretization techniques for the three fundamental types of partial differential equations and in which the reader can find analytical tools, properties of discretizations, and some advice on algorithmic aspects. The book also covers recent research developments: for instance, introductions are given to a posteriori error estimation, discontinuous Galerkin methods, and optimal control for partial differential equations---these topics of current interest are rarely considered in other textbooks. While finite element methods are the main focus of the book, finite difference methods and finite volume techniques are also presented.
Furthermore, the book provides the basic tools needed to solve the discrete problems generated, while chapters on singularly perturbed problems, variational inequalities and optimal control illuminate special topics that reflect the research interests of the authors.

Adaptive Image Processing: A Computational Intelligence Perspective
Publisher: CRC Press | ISBN: 0849302838 | edition 2001 | PDF | 271 pages | 13 mb

Adaptive image processing is one of the most important techniques in visual information processing, especially in early vision such as image restoration, filtering, enhancement, and segmentation. While existing books present some important aspects of the issue, there is not a single book that treats this problem from a viewpoint that is directly linked to human perception - until now. This reference treats adaptive image processing from a computational intelligence viewpoint, systematically and successfully, from theory to applications, using the synergies of neural networks, fuzzy logic, and evolutionary computation. Based on the fundamentals of human perception, this book gives a detailed account of computational intelligence methods and algorithms for adaptive image processing in regularization, edge detection, and early vision.Adaptive Image Processing: A Computational Intelligence Perspective consists of 8 chapters:Chapter 1 - Provides material of an introductory nature to describe the basic concepts and current state-of-the-art in the field of computational intelligence for image restoration and edge detectionChapter 2 - Gives a mathematical description of the restoration problem from the neural network perspective, and describes current algorithms based on this method...

Embedded Java Security: Security for Mobile Devices
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 1846285909 | edition 2006 | PDF | 243 pages | 11 mb

Whereas Java brings functionality and versatility to the world of mobile devices, at the same time it also introduces new security threats. The rapid growth of the number of mobile devices that support Java makes this a pressing issue. Embedded Java Security carefully examines the security aspects of Java and offers a security evaluation for the Java platform.
After explaining background material on the architecture of embedded platforms and relating to its role in security, the book deconstructs the security model into its main components: It explains each component and relates it to the aim of securing the applications and the device. Toward this end, several implementations of the Java platform are examined and tested to relate the model to its actual implementation on devices. The security holes found are further used to clarify security issues and point out common errors. Finally, the book provides an evaluation of embedded Java security that includes security models and security tests performed on real-life implementations.

Material Inhomogeneities and their Evolution: A Geometric Approach (Interaction of Mechanics and Mathematics)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540723722 | edition 2007 | PDF | 275 pages | 13 mb

Inhomogeneity theory is of importance for the description of a variety of material phenomena, including continuous distributions of dislocations, fracture mechanics, plasticity, biological remodelling and growth and, more generally, all processes that entail changes in the material body driven by forces known in literature as material or configurational. This monograph presents a unified treatment of the theory using some of the tools of modern differential geometry. The first part of the book deals with the geometrical description of uniform bodies and their homogeneity (i.e., integrability) conditions. In the second part, a theory of material evolution is developed and its relevance in various applied contexts discussed. The necessary geometrical notions are introduced as needed in the first two parts but often without due attention to an uncompromising mathematical rigour. This task is left for the third part of the book, which is a highly technical compendium of those concepts of modern differential geometry that are invoked in the first two parts (differentiable manifolds, Lie groups, jets, principal fibre bundles, G-structures, connections, frame bundles, integrable prolongations, groupoids, etc.). To make the text as useful as possible to active researchers and graduate students, considerable attention has been devoted to non-standard topics, such as second-grade materials, Cosserat media and functionally graded bodies.

.NET Framework Solutions: In Search of the Lost Win32 API
Publisher: Sybex | ISBN: 078214134X | edition 2003 | PDF | 437 pages | 14,3 mb

If you’ve begun programming using Microsoft’s .NET Framework, you’ve discovered a lot of new and improved functionality. But, more than likely, you’ve also discovered a lot of missing functionality. Indeed, a third of the functions supported by the old Win32 API are not yet supported by .NET. Although you may not at first notice the loss of Win32 API functionality in .NET, the more you program, the more you’ll realize how essential it is. As a programmer, you will not want to do without these solutions.

Single-Cell-Based Models in Biology and Medicine (Mathematics and Biosciences in Interaction)
Publisher: Birkhäuser Basel | ISBN: 3764381019 | edition 2007 | PDF | 346 pages | 13 mb

Many different single-cell-based models have been developed and applied to biological and medical problems. Computational approaches used are Monte-Carlo simulations, energy minimisation techniques, volume conservation laws, solutions of the equations of motion for each individual cell or for each point on the cell membrane. They differ in the level of detail that defines the cell structure and subsequently in the number of individual cells that the model can incorporate.
This volume presents a collection of mathematical and computational single-cell-based models and their application. The main sections cover four general model groupings: hybrid cellular automata, cellular potts, lattice-free cells, and viscoelastic cells. Each section is introduced by a discussion of the applicability of the particular modelling approach and its advantages and disadvantages, which will make the book suitable for students starting research in mathematical biology as well as scientists modelling multicellular processes.
