It is difficult to imagine a more ideal casting than Anna Moffo in the role of Violetta Valery in Verdi's LA TRAVIATA. This movie preserves for posterity the reason why Moffo was the Violetta of the 1960's. A stunningly beautiful woman with an equally beautiful voice, Moffo has all the vocal and interpretative skills to manage this difficult role. The movie is very faithful to the score and the libretto, perhaps too much, sometimes to the point of looking like a theatrical performance instead. The movie does not have subtitles either, something that can be difficult for people with no knowledge of the opera. Besides this, the color and costumes are really good. Alfredo Bonisolli as Alfredo and Gino Bechi as Germont support Moffo both on the visual and musical aspects. Among the best scenes of the movie are "A Forse lui...Sempre Libera" with a sparkling display of Moffo's beautiful eyes and coloratura technique. Also remarkable is the Violetta-Germont duet, a moment where Moffo and Bechi create a great moment of musical theater. This movie is in my opinion, even with its technical flaws, more effective in making a case for this wonderful opera than the Zefirelli. It presents Moffo in her best role one, one of the best interpretations in opera history. ~ amazon.com

This box makes a nice alternative to the Philips boxes under Colin Davis. Not to take anything away from Davis. Universal has brought us a great compilation of some of Berlioz' best works from a variety of performers with different styles.
The jewel has to be Ozawa's unsurpassed Romeo and Juliet. This 1976 studio recording had its birth at the Tanglewood Festival and features excellent soloists (Julia Hamari, Jose Van Dam, and Jean Dupouy), a very competent choir, and of course the reliable Boston SO. The recording is of outstanding quality.
Barenboim's Damnaton is perdictably Furtwangler-like in tempo, and again features top notch singers in Fischer Dieskau, Jules Bastin, & Placido Domingo.
Levine directs a well recorded and balanced classical-sounding Requiem, and Abbado is more than competent in the Te Deum. Chung's Fantastique is fun and enjoyable.
In short, you can't go wrong for the price, and if you love Berlioz' Romeo, you've got to get this box just for the Ozawa gem. ~ amazon.com

In 1986 - the centenary of Liszt's death - Leslie Howard gave a series of ten Liszt recitals in London. By carefully selecting only Liszt own compsitions, Howard was able to represent Liszt's entire solo piano work.
Consequently Howard made the largest recording project ever - the complete music for solo piano of Liszt (1985-1999).
All Liszt's versions of his piano music were included, including more than 300 premiere performances and recordings, and pieces unheard since Liszt's lifetime, and also all arrangements of other composers' work. Four discs were given to Liszt's seventeen works for piano and orchestra, about half of which were premiere recordings made from unpublished manuscripts.
The series ran at first to 94 full-length CDs, and earned Howard a place in the Guinness Book Of Records. One bonus disc and two later Cds - New Liszt Discoveries raised the number to 97. Two new discs were recently recorded and will appear in 2010.

Pau Carles Salvador Casals i Defilló (December 29, 1876 – October 22, 1973), was a catalan cellist and composer. He studied at Barcelona from 1887 and made his début there in 1891. After further study in Madrid and Brussels his international career began in 1899, when he played Lalo's Concerto under Lamoureux in Paris. In 1905 he formed a trio with Thibaud and Cortot, recording works by Schubert and Beethoven. As a soloist Casals was renowned for his beautiful tone and intellectual strength. His playing did much to bring Bach's suites into the repertory. He formed the Orquestra Pau Casals in Barcelona in 1919 but his activities were curtailed by the Spanish Civil War. In 1950 at Prades he returned to music-making and later directed festivals at Perpignan and Puerto Rico. His many pupils included Guilhermina Suggia, with whom he formed a liaison. Casals wrote instrumental works and many choral pieces of a simple, devotional nature. ~ Music Encyclopedia
