Urban Structure Matters: Residential Location, Car Dependence and Travel Behaviour
Publisher: Routledge | ISBN: 0415375746 | edition 2006 | PDF | 344 pages | 10 mb

Going beyond previous investigations into urban land use and travel, Petter Næss presents new research from Denmark on residential location and travel to show how and why urban spatial structures affect people's travel behaviour. In a comprehensive case study of the Copenhagen metropolitan area, Næss combines traditional quantitative travel surveys with qualitative interviews in order to identify the more detailed mechanisms through which urban structure affects travel behaviour. The case study findings are compared with those from other Nordic countries and analyzed and evaluated in the light of relevant theory and literature to provide solid, valuable conclusions for planning sustainable urban development.

Some Assembly Required
Publisher: University of Minnesota Press | ISBN: 0816634823 | edition 2001 | PDF | 264 pages | 11,7 mb

Michael Sorkin is widely hailed as one of the best architecture critics writing today. Iconoclastic and often controversial, he is a witty, entertaining, yet ultimately serious writer. In this new collection, Sorkin reviews the state of contemporary architecture and surveys the dramatic changes in the urban environment of the past decade. From New York to New Delhi, from Shanghai to Cairo, Sorkin offers a sweeping assessment of the impact of globalization, environmental degradation, electronic media, rapid growth, and the legacies of modernist planning. Whether laying out, manifesto-like, eleven necessary tasks for urban design, providing a fresh take on the Disneyfication of Times Square, grappling with sprawl, or blasting the nostalgic prescriptions of "new urbanist" communities (which he dubs "Reaganville"), Sorkin makes a compelling argument for an architecture and urbanism firmly grounded in both artistic expression and social purpose.

Guide to the Architecture of Minnesota
Publisher: University of Minnesota Press | ISBN: 0816607753 | edition 1978 | PDF | 320 pages | 37,8 mb

This book was conceived from its inception to supplement and augment the Bicentennial exhibition, The Art and Architecture of Minnesota, organized and presented by the University Gallery in conjunction with the Minnesota Society of Architects. The exhibition was more than three years in the planning stages, and at every step our desire was to publish something other than an exhibition catalogue — something at once less ephemeral and more comprehensive yet not boring that ubiquitous person, the "interested layman," with heavily erudite prose. In the end we decided to publish A Guide to the Architecture of Minnesota. Long a priority of the Minnesota Society of Architects, such a guide seemed to us to be the sort of publication which would most nearly meet our needs.

Kathy E. Zimon, "The Rule Wynn and Rule Architectural Drawings"
Univ of Calgary Pr | 1997-03 | ISBN: 1895176816 | 321 pages | PDF --> html | 10 MB

In 1938, John Rule and Gordon Wynn established their firm, which eventually became one of the leading architectural practices in western Canada. John's brother, Peter Rule, joined the firm in the following year. With offices in both Edmonton and Calgary, the firm achieved some success in institutional commissions, such as schools and hospital renovations. After the war, Rule Wynn and Rule were commissioned to do the headquarters for the Greyhound Buslines Terminals in Calgary, Winnipeg, Lethbridge, Fort MacLeod, Kingsgate, B.C., and Edmonton. During the 1950s, the firm designed a number of significant office buildings in Calgary as well as the Rutherford Library at the University of Alberta and the Rialto Theatre, the Weston Bread factory and the AGT (Alberta Government Telephones) building in Edmonton. They also designed the original buildings for the Banff Centre.

The holdings of the Canadian Architectural Archives focus on the architecture of twentieth-century Canada and the work of its outstanding architects.
