Tolkien's masterpiece, and arguably the greatest fantasy work in Western literature, is a massive and complex epic simultaneously about the history of the imaginary kingdom of Middle Earth and the difficult quest of a group of adventurers as they strike out against the dark forces of Sauron, the Dark Lord.

This and the BBC dramatisation are two different things. The BBC dramatisation although very long is by it's very nature an abridged version of the books and therefore is not a true AudioBook. This unabridged version is complete, so it all comes down to a matter of taste do you prefer a dramatisation of a book or reading of it. Both are excellent in their own right, and in my opinion I would start with this version first and then go onto the BBC version.
