Careers in Focus: Child Care describes a variety of careers in the rewarding world of child care—in child care centers, hospitals, medical offices, libraries, schools, and countless other settings. These careers are as diverse in nature as they are in their earnings and educational requirements.A few of these careers—such as nannies, child care workers, and teacher aides—require little formal education, but are excellent starting points for a career in the industry. Others—such as child care service owners, coaches, neonatal nurses, preschool teachers, and school nurses—require some postsecondary training. The majority of careers in the child care and services industry, though, require a bachelor’s degree (such as child life specialists, elementary school teachers, social workers, and special education teachers) or a master’s degree (such as child psychologists, children’s librarians, creative arts therapists, guidance counselors, and speech-language pathologists and audiologists). The career of pediatrician requires a medical degree.
