Speech Quality of VoIP: Assessment and Prediction
Publisher: Wiley | ISBN: 0470030607 | edition 2006 | PDF | 337 pages | 2,54 mb

Current instrumental speech quality measurement techniques cannot necessarily be classified in a strict manner according to this black-box/glass-box dichotomy. Instead, different methods enable more or less diagnostic information to be obtained. Sometimes the terms ‘whitebox’ and ‘grey-box’ are used in the literature in these cases (M¨oller, 2005a, pp. 86–89). Methods of speech quality measurement can also be distinguished according to the applied type of measurement apparatus into auditory and instrumental methods. Since perceived quality is internal to the user, auditory quality tests are ultimately the only means of validly and reliably assessing quality (see Section 1.2). As auditory speech quality tests are time-consuming and costly, instrumental quality measurement methods have been developed. Within the range of network configurations these models have been designed for, and proven to provide valid and reliable quality predictions, they can be used as a replacement or complement of auditory tests. The present chapter gives an overview of different auditory and instrumental quality measurement methods relevant for this book.
