Born in Nazi Germany, Richard Schmitt came to the United States after World War II. He was educated at the University of Chicago and at Yale University. Author of a number of books and many articles about existentialism and political theory, he taught at Brown Uni-versity and also at Stanford University, the University of California at Santa Barbara and at Miles College in Birmingham, AL.
