Statistical models for the description of microbial population growth have been reviewed with emphasis on their features that make them useful for applications. Evidence is shown that the integrodifferential equations of population balance are solvable using approximate methods. Simulative techniques have been shown to be useful in dealing with growth situations for which the equations are not easily solved.

The theory of elasticity is concerned with the mechanics of defor- mable media which, after the removal of the forces producing defor- deformation, completely recover their original shape and give up all the work expended in the deformation. The first attempts to develop the theory of elasticity on the basis of the concept of a continuous medium, which enables one to ignore its molecular structure and describe macroscopic phenomena by the methods of mathematical analysis, date back to the first half of the eighteenth century.

The aim of this book is to introduce a range of combinatorial methods for those who want to apply these methods in the solution of practical and theoretical problems. Various tricks and techniques are taught by means of exercises. Hints are given in a separate section and a third section contains all solutions in detail. A dictionary section gives definitions of the combinatorial notions occurring in the book.

The space we see around us is the end product of a long series of processes: physical, physiological, and cognitive. It is a highly structured perceptual entity. In contrast to the fact that most studies of visual perception are concerned with local phenomena in this visual space, the main purpose of this book is to discuss the global structure of visual space. The physical space which surrounds us is of Euclidean structure, but its perceived image is not necessarily structured in that way. Problems such as why the sky appears as a vault and why the horizon is located at eye level are discussed in the book.

This book is a unique collection of experimental data in the field of internal friction, anelastic relaxation, and damping properties of metallic materials. It reviews virtually all anelastic relaxation phenomena ever published, and also most of the internal friction effects based on other types of dissipation of mechanical (elastic) energy. Furthermore, the reader is also supplied with explanations of the basic physical mechanisms of internal friction, a summary of typical effects for different groups of metals, and more than 2000 references to original papers.

This monograph was begun in 1902-3. Class I, Class II, Part I, and the self- conjugate groups of Class III, which contain all the groups with independent generators, formed the thesis which I presented to the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Pennsylvania in June, 1903, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The entire paper was rewritten and the other groups added while the author was Research Fellow in Mathematics at the University.

This book explores medieval uses of the incest motif in a variety of literary genres, including romance, hagiography, and exempla.
