FRANK ZAPPA Zoot Allures Original 1976 US Warners 9-track vinyl LP.

Year: 1979
Lable: Warner Brothers Records BS2970
Style: Jazz
Country: USA
Audio: 24bit-96kHz - Vinyl Rip, FLAC
Size: 954 MB

About the Recording

Among Zappa's grittier works, ZOOT ALLURES is a strong piece of mid-'70s work that focuses more on the interaction of Zappa and a small group that includes Terry Bozzio, Ruth Underwood and Roy Estrada, temporarily abandoning the jazzy, large-scale efforts of previous albums like ONE SIZE FITS ALL. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but all the disparate ingredients for a satisfying whole. There are simple, catchy rock tunes like "Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station," "Ms. Pinky," a synth-led ode to a sexual toy, and "Disco Boy," which foreshadowed Zappa's hit "Dancing Fool." The lovely instrumental "Black Napkins" is among the prettiest compositions in Zappa's canon, highlighting his guitar work in an uncharacteristically restrained mode. The arguable centerpiece of the album is the epic-length "The Torture Never Stops." Sung by Zappa in his deepest, dirtiest, most ominous voice, the song recounts the tale of an evil monarch who does unspeakable things in the depths of his castle. Full of Zappa's bluesy guitar interjections, its one of the most deliciously unsavory things FZ ever committed to tape.

That one is audio CD, this one is hi-resolution LP rip.

Excellent choice! Can't wait to hear this one. My internet connection can't keep up with yours & aksman's rips.
Do you do any declicking after ripping? So far your stuff has sounded very clean.
Posted By: dimsal Date: 27 May 2009 03:53:17
I usually do manual de-clicking and I also had very good results with ClickRepair done in reverse mode.

dimsal,
could you please publish MD5 check sum for all arch. parts in yor posts?
Thank you!

In the days when I used to buy my vinyl records nothing would piss me off more than one or two minor clicks. Seems like you have found yourself a flawless copy!
I guess I'm a real dummy when the art of vinyl ripping is involved so I'll take your Ripping Equipment details for granted. But what an awesome piece of work you have accomplished here, dimsal! Listening to one of my all-time favourite Zappa track "The Torture Never Stops" gives me a boner, even when produced through a PC speaker set. Thanks a million for this landmark post!!

Thanks, I have the UK pressing of this LP, it'll be nice to compare to this US pressing :)
Posted By: dimsal Date: 27 May 2009 13:48:32
@anyone who has trouble unzipping. you have to first combine all files into a single one. Use a program like HJSplit (you can download it here http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/). Then you can use any program to uzip.

@ el3434 - I don't have MD5 check sum, sorry.

@ Mister Cee - yes, it should be interesting comparison, I've heard that this original US pressing considered by many to be the best.

dimsal
there are many tools for md5 calc. e.g. you can find some of them at
http://en.softonic.com/s/md5
(some sort of check sum generates http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit
but its not md5.... in worst case you also may use it.)
or you may use TotalCommander.

Thanks for the tip on HJ Split - it worked fine for me. It would have taken me a while to figure out what to do with these files on my own. Publishing some kind of checksum is not a bad idea, also publishing the flac fingerprints is not a bad idea - this way when your files start showing up on other sites (which they surely will), people can verify that they are your original, unmodified files.

BTW- if you have any 70s fusion along the lines of Weather Report, Mahavishnu, or Brand X it would be most welcome. :-)

Thank you! No problems with the extraction for me.
Posted By: bruno.tessari Date: 28 May 2009 23:30:42
Sorry but... how can I listen this file?
Since it's a 96KHz / 24 bits file it is impossible to listen using Windows Media Player etc..
Posted By: SuperFuzz Date: 30 May 2009 16:28:05
Bruno: many media players will play these. Try Foobar, or Winamp.
Posted By: xlebywek Date: 30 May 2009 17:37:11
Dimsal , my man
Why do you post the rips in such an arrangement , its prone to all the problems one can have with unarchiving , and no recovery record to remedy.
Can you just post in 200MB RAR parts with recovery record ?

Other than that , your rips are amazing :)
Want to send you a bottle of "black label" for the "jazz at the pawnshop" you did :)
The sound is really good with just the right amount of clicks to set the mood for authentic vinyl mood without being annoying :)

Well, I'm doing it on a Mac, and I couldn't find a better solution to satisfy both Mac and Windows users, if you know one let me know I'll be happy to use it.
I'm a bit lazy, I could launch a Parallels on my Mac and use it to WinRar the files of course, perhaps that's what I'm going to do from now on.
