Money Jungle is a jazz album by Duke Ellington with Charles Mingus and Max Roach recorded on September 17, 1962 and released in February 1963 by United Artists Jazz.

The almost all-Ellington repertoire on this album is not only reworks of older compositions, as Ellington wrote the bulk of the material specifically for the LP.

All songs composed by Duke Ellington solely (except where otherwise stated).

Review by Ken Dryden

Duke Ellington surprised the jazz world in 1962 with his historic trio session featuring Charles Mingus and Max Roach. Not in a mood to simply rework older compositions, the bulk of the LP focused on music he wrote specifically for the session. "Money Jungle" is a thunderous opener, a blues that might be classified somewhere between post-bop and avant-garde. The gem of the date is the fragile, somewhat haunting ballad "Fleurette Africaine," where Mingus' floating bassline and Roach's understated drumming add to the mystique of an Ellington work that has slowly been gathering steam among jazz musicians as a piece worth exploring more often. "Very Special" is a jaunty upbeat blues, while the angular, descending line of "Wig Wise" also proves to be quite catchy. Ellington also revisits "Warm Valley" (a lovely ballad indelibly associated with Johnny Hodges) and an almost meditative "Solitude." Thunderous percussion and wild basslines complement a wilder-than-usual approach to "Caravan." Every jazz fan should own a copy of this sensational recording session.

Personal Note

With my vinyl transfers, I try to catch the whole beauty of vinyl records; therefore I don't use any post-processing or any sound improvement. What you get is a clear and flat transfer. For getting a clear sound, I'll do an extended washing of each record with my RCM, which can take up to 30 minutes brushing on each side. Resistant ticks and clicks I try to remove as good as possible, but the priority is not to lose any musical information in the process. Surface noises, as long they are not too high, are left in place. Only on bad pressings or on records recorded at extremely low levels do I use a fade in-/-out. As John Peel said, "Life is full of surface noises." In some cases this means that I have to make a compromise.... The result has to pass my personal quality criteria, which is IMO quite high.

I used to hate this album up until a few months ago. And I have no idea either. It contains two people that are among my top favorite jazz artists(duke and monk), so I have no idea why I didn't like this. But now I do, and it's nice to have a vinyl rip of this. Especially an aksman vinyl rip.

Thank you for your work. It is very appreciated.

Big thanks for your transfer ! Wonderful recording but poorly recorded.

Compared to the 2 cd releases (97 & 2002), the balance is inversed & the vinyl version include the original mix (really nice to hear that) instead of (two) new remixes from the multitracks.

The average recording is not improved on the remixes because piano distorsion are on the multitracks and cannot be reduced and the hiss is always too present.
The latest cd edition suffer from some limiting (not on each track) that are not present on vinyl and 1st cd remix (1997).
There are reverb on the piano on the second (2002) remix.

The remix reduce the stereo panning but unfortunatley not improve the sound, it's not worst but not better too, just different & maybe a little more aggressive on the mids.

The cd edition include bonus tracks.

Thanks a million for all of your efforts on this and so many other lp transfers! If you'll allow just a small nitpick, please: the last 2 tracks on side 1 exhibit a bit of wow...is it possible the pressing was rather off-center? Without a removable spindle centering is a pain, and can involve gouging a bit extra out of the center hole...I'm always reluctant to do it, but have resorted to this method a few times!

Thank you!!
