Barenboim's Beethoven symphony cycle is the most emotionally complete, humane, and perfectly realized series of non-period instrument performances of this music to have appeared in decades. The best cycles of the past few years (Mackerras, Gielen, and Harnoncourt) have all belonged to the "authenticist" school to greater or lesser degree. Barenboim's achievement clearly demonstrates that a wonderful tradition is alive, vital, and still capable of renewal through intelligent understanding expressed in partnership with a like-minded orchestra, and above all, through supreme musicianship on the podium. His encounter with this music's generosity of spirit and deep passion will provoke, stimulate, challenge, and delight. - David Hurwitz

Engine: DVDFab in clone mode
The first five discs are my original rips. I downloaded the 6th disc (Symphony No. 9). Thanks to the original uploader.
ISOs of discs 1-5 are watermarked. The last ISO is not.
The files were named according to the symphonies included in each DVD (1&2, 3, 4&5 etc.). The names of the links for the scans end in "SC".
I have the Haitink 9 symphony box set as a PS3 rip, they are also similarly dynamic to these.
It will be interesting to compare the 2 versions.
I wouldn't be surprised to find I prefer the sound of the DVD-As over the SACDs.
I'll have to wait for the wee wee hours to download from these servers though and it'll take all night.
It's a shame you could not have them on RS as I'd then have them all before midnight.
Again many thanks and keep going on.
I already could compare the two versions and I prefer the Haitink one on SACD (stereo layer). As I only have a stereo equipment I don't really know how the Barenboim version sounds on a 5-channel equipment (curiously the Barenboim set doesn't come in stereo as many other DVD-A).
Other question: as most of the BArenboim DVD-A are watermarked I currently listen to them as 5-channel flac files (extracted from the ISOs with DVD Audio Extractor). I play the files on a DUNE HD BASE 3.0 network player which I suppose downmixes the 5 channel to 2 channels on the SPDIF coax out.
Do you think there is an other (better) way to play these DVD-A with a stereo system?
Like atolones2000, I would like to know how best to play these 5-channel DVD-As with a stereo system.
Does DVD Audio Extractor work with watermarked ISOs?
Thanks to evaristegalois for an excellent post.
A few precisions for ManWhoCan: my Denon DVD-3910 plays perfectly the SACD ISOs but not the watermarked DVD-As. And with DVD Audio Extractor I only can extract the 5-channel audio files (seems to be no stereo layer) from the Barenboim's Beethoven Symphonies. DVD Audio Extractor allows to extract the 5-channel files in stereo but I don't trust this method because I'm afraid the quality is poor. That's why I ask for the better way to enjoy these ripped DVD-As with a stereo hi-fi system.
Many thanks to evaristegalois for this post!
IMHO I generally prefer the DVD-A format over SACD but there is no way to compare the Barenboim or the Haitink in both formats. One is DVD-A and the other is SACD and they are entirely different recordings/masterings, so any comparison has to be highly subjective. I notice a general theme with SACD mastering; that the stereo version usually has less time and care spent on it and the Mch nearly always has higher DR.
I have not spent enough time with these particular recordings, discussed here, to give much opinion either way and it is ONLY my opinion that I can give, not any clever analysis or whatever.
Please bare in mind the Barenboims are 5ch not 5.1 so you need to set up your system with the LFE off to get the best from them. But most people have dismally small speakers nowadays, due to the WAF & the popularity of subwoofers.
As well as a large centre speaker, I have 4 full size cabinets with 12" woofers in each one, so I have no need of any sub. Therefore on my system 5ch sounds so much better that on many people's systems that have to rely on a sub for bass or who are stereo only.
As for stereo reproduction of the Barenboims 5ch recording I dunno for certain, but I imagine the 5ch MLP has a stereo mixdown it nearly always does. This is essentially the same content as in 5ch with the rears and centre re-mixed into the 2 fronts. I would think this sounds fine but I see there is also Dolby surround on the DVD-As so if your equipment is not DVD-A/MLP enabled then you are only ever going to get the nasty Dolby sound on a Dune or Logitech Squeeze e.g..
Watermarks are removable from any DVD-A, but it is time consuming and needs great care to do. The disc of the 9th symphony is not watermarked.
I have, on at least 2/3 occasions, posted in comments on this hraphile page instructions on watermark removal. I don't know if the comments on Avax are searchable.
Update:
There are stereo downmixes and you can see them via foobar. To get the stereo mix from the actual disc use DVDAExplorer, but I don't think DVDAExplorer can open the iso posted here as it looks for the AUDIO_TS folder. It should be possible to use some iso opening softs like UltraISO or Isobuster to get the AUDIO-TS folder from these iso and then use DVDAExplorer to open that AUDIO_TS folder and extract the stereo MLP. You might also be able to do this in foobar.
DVD Audio Extractor is not up to the job it seems.
As I said I don't trust the downmixes with foobar and DVD Audio Extractor. That's why I extract the audio 5-channel files from these DVD-As. How? It's simple: just mount the disc image of the DVD-A with DAEMON Tools Lite (free) and open it with DVD Audio Extractor. Then you can choose the output format and "stereo" or "all channels".
I'll search for your instructions on watermark removal (found!!): http://avaxhome.ws/hraphile/mlp_dvda/zmh_mhl.html
Thanks again!!
Are you sure you are getting the lossless MLP stereo version with DVD Audio Extractor via Daemon tools? I would think not and you probably only get the lossy Dolby version.
Use DVDAExplorer then you can see and grab the MLP version, which will sound so much better that the Dolby. Even if it is a so called 'downmix' which is a misnomer in a way as really it is a 're-mix' or alternate mix.
Tested both softwares (DVD Audio Extractor / DVDAExplorer) :
the extracted/stereo dowmixed track (Beethoven Symph. 4, first movement) is exactly the same (as stated by foobar):
PCM / 4608 kbps / 96000 khz / stereo / 399 MB
Only difference:
The volume level of the DVDAExplorer one is slightly higher.
I compared these 2 stereo versions whith the 5-channel versions extracted in the same way (with DVD Audio Extractor and then with DVDAExplorer). I find the 5ch ones are better (richer sound, may be a subjective opinion). They are technically the same :
PCM / 11520 kbps / 96000 khz / 5ch /998 MB
Conclusion: I'll keep extracting the 5-channel tracks (and buy hard disks as they are bigger)!
LOL! At least HDDs are cheap now.
I respectfully suggest your money would be well spent on a good surround system for audio. You can keep your speakers, add a couple more and a nice AVR maybe a Denon, even 2nd hand to save a bit, to add to your stereo amp. Then you can really enjoy these surround files.
LOL Stereo is so 60's! Quad arrived in the 70s and 5.1 not so long after. Stereo buffs are such dinosaurs :-)
"Stereo buffs are such dinosaurs." - Nice one, ManWhoCan.
No chance for a 5.1 system: no enough space (my equipment is in my bedroom). I'll keep my stereo buffs!!! :-)
HDCD's are technically 20-bit 44.1kHz audio CD's. Converting these tracks to FLAC produces 24-bit files that are the same size as the 16-bit original files, within a small margin.
The FLAC files ripped the from 24-bit DVD-Audio (the stuff located in the AUDIO_TS folder) were significantly larger than comparable 20-bit HDCD files.
FLAC seems to be able to drop the padded bits in the 20-bit audio. The larger file sizes from DVD-Audio compared to HDCD indicate to me that DVD-Audio Extractor is producing real 24-bit audio files.
I invite anyone to try the HDCD comparison using eac3to.exe
Interesting experience in ripping HDCDs. Thanks for sharing!
