For this classic encounter, Duke Ellington "sat in" with the John Coltrane Quartet for a set dominated by Ellington's songs; some performances have his usual sidemen (bassist Aaron Bell and drummer Sam Woodyard) replacing Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones in the group. Although it would have been preferable to hear Coltrane play in the Duke Ellington orchestra instead of the other way around, the results are quite rewarding. Their version of "In a Sentimental Mood" is a high point, and such numbers as "Take the Coltrane," "Big Nick," and "My Little Brown Book" are quite memorable. Ellington always recognized talent, and Coltrane seemed quite happy to be recording with a fellow genius. ~ AllMusic

Never heard this one. Grabbing the FLAC files.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the ISO!

Thanks!!!!
I first downloaded the flacs, as usally for pratically reasons, but then I grab also the iso, for curiosity.
I palyed them with foobar and....I cleary ear a difference! The flac seems more "emphatic", more loud.
Are my impressions correct? Which one do you prefer?

The flac tracks will sound more loud as they have been gain adjusted but the iso has not and has much lower volume.

I reckon there should have been no digital gain adjustment made in FLACs. It is not desirable and doesn't present the music as intended by the engineer. We all have our amplifiers for this. For better sonic performance it's more reasonable to employ your amplifier's power to do the job than to add low quality digital gain during file conversion.

Thanks for brilliant upload!

@ ZZBottom: Depending on the peak value of the 1-bit data, it is always recommended to add a gain of -3 to -6 dB when converting from DSD to PCM. DSD, by its very nature, contains very loud data that are beyond the defined range of PCM stream. Those signals will invariably be clipped during conversion & playback. To avoid that you MUST apply gain, so no clipping occurs, and noise shaping stays smooth. Of course, you can always add those lost decibels back afterwards during the playback of PCM.
