Grohl's most memorable set of songs since 1997's The Colour and the Shape.
- Mikael Wood/Spin

Wasting Light is the seventh studio album by American alternative rock band Foo Fighters, released April 12, 2011, on RCA Records. It was produced by Butch Vig and described by the band's lead vocalist and guitarist Dave Grohl as their "heaviest album yet." The title is taken from the lyrics of the song "Miss the Misery". Guest musicians include Bob Mould and Krist Novoselic.

The album sold 235,000 in its first week of release and debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, becoming the band's first number-one album in the United States. It also attained chart success in several other countries. Upon its release, Wasting Light received positive reviews from most music critics, who complimented its production and the band's songwriting.

Background and recording

Recording of the album began September 6, 2010 with producer Butch Vig, who had previously produced the two new tracks for the band's Greatest Hits album. The band's lead vocalist and guitarist Dave Grohl said of the album, "With [Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace] we were too concerned with being musical. Now it's time for us to be a rock band again." Unlike the band's previous two albums, In Your Honor and Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, Wasting Light was recorded in Dave Grohl's garage, as opposed to the band's home-built studio, Studio 606. Regarding this decision, Grohl states: "There's poetry in being the band that can sell out Wembley but also makes a record in a garage." Vig said in an interview with MTV that the album was recorded using entirely analogue equipment until post-mastering. All copies of the album contain a small section of the original analogue master tape, an idea by Dave Grohl.

Although he has performed live with the band since 2006, Wasting Light is the first studio album to feature guitarist Pat Smear as an official member since The Colour and the Shape (1997). The recording of the album was filmed as part of a career-spanning documentary called Back and Forth.

Personal Note

With my vinyl transfers, I try to catch the whole beauty of vinyl records; therefore I don't use any post-processing or any sound improvement. What you get is a clear and flat transfer. For getting a clear sound, I'll do an extended washing of each record with my RCM, which can take up to 30 minutes brushing on each side. Resistant ticks and clicks I try to remove as good as possible, but the priority is not to lose any musical information in the process. Surface noises, as long they are not too high, are left in place. Only on bad pressings or on records recorded at extremely low levels do I use a fade in-/-out. As John Peel said, "Life is full of surface noises." In some cases this means that I have to make a compromise.... The result has to pass my personal quality criteria, which is IMO quite high.

Holy smokes! Thanks for this one! Does anyone know if this was mastered in analog as well? I know it was recorded in analog, just haven't heard about the mastering.

Thank you Aksman & Radam40 for this great share. :-)

Thanks for this one aksman, hoped I'd see this record here!! Like Johhenrik, I've been wondering about the mastering for ages. Looks like it doesn't say AAA anywhere on the record, so who knows. Vig said it was all analogue until post mastering, but that could mean they mastered it in the analogue domain, and then fed that into an ADC, and then cut the vinyl from the digital master. The CD was definitely limited in the digital domain, cos no analogue gear clips like that!!

OMG!
Actually I was waiting months for this rip. Thank you very much aksman!

Hi aksman,

I hope you don't take this as criticism, because it's not, I love your rips, they sound
amazing to me all the time and you sure know a hell of a lot more about this than me, that's
not even a doubt.

I was just wondering about the SBE errors correction or lack of on your redbook rips, I don't
think it ever would make any difference listening on a computer, but could cause playback issues
when burnt to cd, or so I've read.

I grab both versions, hi rez and redbook, even though I know how to convert to redbook with your
and Docs help on the izotope settings and process. It's just easier to downlaod them for me and
I now have 4 3TB drives, so storage isn't an issue.

I grab the redbook for burning to CDs for friends that want them and aren't up on playing hi rez or
just want to jam in the car and for myself for car playback.

I don't mind fixing or padding the SBE alignment errors, it's simple with trader's little helper, flac
fronted will do it too...and if that's all I have to do while you do all the hard work it's no big deal.

Just curious I guess, maybe SBE errors aren't a big deal and I'm wasting my time, plus some folks that burn to
CD may not be aware that it could cause playback issues, but I have no idea how much of an issue since
I've never tested it, just fixed them to be safe.

Like I said, not complaining, love the music and the effort you put into it, I have an idea of how much
time goes into your efforts and I appreciate it very much.

Have a good one, keep up the great work you do and we all love.

In flac frontend, check "Align on Sector Boundaries", which is the easiest way to avoid SBE's...
Posted By: aksman Date: 16 Aug 2011 08:44:21
@ dngruss

Thx for pointing on that prob... Didn't been aware of it because I never had trouble when burning my rips on CD.
I will try to fix it for future posts.

@ bazjed

Sounds easy but didn't work for me... FLAC didn't start when I activate "Allign on Sector Boundaries".

aksman,

I'm glad I didn't offend you aksman, you do great rips. I'm not even positive it's that big a
deal, but better safe than sorry I suppose and it's easy to address. I know it isn't my intention
to make things harder for you.

I don't know that SBEs are really that big a problem, but most seem to agree that fixing them after
splitting a wave file in CD format of a self recorded source is the proper way to go, I guess they
can cause audible clicks at ends of tracks and sometimes cause seek problems, things of that nature.

I prefer traders little helper over flac frontend for checking for and either fixing or padding
SBE's and you can encode with it too of course.

I've had issues with flac frontend at times myself too with the align on sector boundaires either not
working or not aligning all tracks. I think in my case it's a windows 7 issue, but I haven't investigated
it because trader's little helper does the job better for me at the moment with no headache.

The biggest headache I've had with Trader's little helper, if you can call it one, is when fixing SBEs, it
appends fixed to the filename ....when fixing flac encoding to flac....and doesn't carry over the tag metadata
to the new file, at least I haven't noticed an option for copying metadata tags over.

I just use the old files and load them either in foobar with the new one's or mp3tag and transfer the tag info
over and then unload the old one's and use the "convert tag to filename" option to get rid of the -fixed at the
end of the filename.

It's probably easier to just load the wav files in TLH and fix the SBEs while encoding to flac...you won't have
that -fixed filename issue I described above.

Trader's Little Helper

You may look into XrecodeII aksman, I think like Xact for mac it handles the SBE deal while encoding.

Anyways, hope I didn't make things more difficult for you dude.

Dear Aksman,

Yes xACT for the Mac fixes SBE while encoding from AIFF to FLAC. Before I found xACT I used Trader's Little Helper within Windows. I used it to fix SBE's. As I recall I went from the AIFF's out of iZotope to WAV with TLH, from the fixed WAV I converted to FLAC.
