Jimi Hendrix's second album followed up his groundbreaking debut effort with a solid collection of great tunes and great interactive playing between himself, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, and the recording studio itself.- Cub Koda/AMG (5/5 Stars)

Axis: Bold as Love is the second studio album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Under pressure from their record company to follow-up the successful debut of their May 1967 album Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love was released on Track Records in the UK in December 1967. It reached #5 in the UK and later, #3 in the US.

The album was recorded to fulfill the band's contract, which stated that they must produce two albums in 1967. Even so, it was not released in the USA until 1968 due to fears that it might have disturbed the sales of the first album. Bassist Noel Redding has noted that this was his favourite of three Experience albums. He plays eight string bass on some tracks.

Just before the album's completion, Hendrix left the master tapes of side 1 in a taxi. They were never found again, and thus the A-side had to be mixed again quickly.

Personal Note

With my vinyl transfers, I try to catch the whole beauty of vinyl records; therefore I don't use any post-processing or any sound improvement. What you get is a clear and flat transfer. For getting a clear sound, I'll do an extended washing of each record with my RCM, which can take up to 30 minutes brushing on each side. Resistant ticks and clicks I try to remove as good as possible, but the priority is not to lose any musical information in the process. Surface noises, as long they are not too high, are left in place. Only on bad pressings or on records recorded at extremely low levels do I use a fade in-/-out. As John Peel said, "Life is full of surface noises." In some cases this means that I have to make a compromise.... The result has to pass my personal quality criteria, which is IMO quite high.

Can I ask for opinions about the stereo/mono versions, please?
Like how or why is one 'better' or 'nicer' than the other?
Posted By: kwork Date: 16 Aug 2011 15:32:10
While I can't answer your question, when I find out that there is a dedicated mono mix, as well as a stereo, I like to get both. It means that both were mixed separately. In the case of Beatles albums, it could sometimes mean a difference in instrumentation, vocals, reverb, etc. My advice is to grab both, and listen and see for yourself. That is my plan.

Wow! This is up again!

Just a question, aksman.

I remember the first time you captured and shared this mono version in two channels (stereo). But this time I notice you're sharing a single channel file.
My question: in this new rip, did you transfered in two channels and then fold down to a single channel?
Because when you record in stereo from mono source (even 100% flat mono), the channels has are not 100% alike, there's some "stereo noise".
So it's important that you didn't join both channels, even if they're "supposed" to be same. I think you know what I mean ;).

And, again, let me thank you so much for sharing this =D!

Great sounding rip! Thanks aksman! In response to MasterGlove, these are not single channel files. I checked the files in a wave editor and they are in fact 2 channel files with each one very slightly different from the other. There is no channel mixing going on here.
