In every way, it's a considerable, lasting achievement and it's little wonder that Peter Gabriel had to leave the band after this record: they had gone as far as they could go together, and could never top this extraordinary album.
- Stephen Thomas Erlewine/AMG (5/5 Stars)

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a double concept album recorded and released in 1974 by the British rock band Genesis. It was their sixth studio album and the last album by the group to feature the involvement of lead singer Peter Gabriel.

Premise

The album tells the surreal story of a half Puerto Rican juvenile delinquent named Rael living in New York City, who is swept underground to face bizarre creatures and nightmarish dangers in order to rescue his brother John. Several of the story's occurrences and places were derived from Peter Gabriel's dreams, and the protagonist's name is a play on his surname. In an interview Phil Collins remarked, "It's about a 'split personality'[citation needed]. In this context, Rael would believe he is looking for John but is actually looking for a missing part of himself. The individual songs also make satirical allusions to everything from mythology to the sexual revolution to advertising and consumerism. The title track, as well as "The Carpet Crawlers" and "In the Cage", are live favourites for the band. Both "In the Cage" and "The Carpet Crawlers" were included in 2007's Turn it On Again: The Tour, with "The Carpet Crawlers" played as the closing number.

Reception

In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, the album came No.14 in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums".

The album came 9th in Uncut's "10 best concept albums", where it was described as an "impressionistic, intense album" and "pure theatre (in a good way) and still Gabriel's best work".

Ripping Note

While the overall sound quality of this Classic Records release is very good, the pressing quality was a bit disappointing. The whole record is noisier as usual. Due to the low music level (because of playing time) and the amount of quite parts, this could be may be disturbing for those who are not used to listen to vinyl.

Aksman I don't know what to say. I would dream owning these audiophile pressings and general pressings that were done with precision. You the Doc Kel and Pbthal and Tube Doctor and many many others literally made a dream coming through with your postings this technology is a dream. MH ( and the pressing is fine. I have a 1980's reissue and sounds great too w the Atco label in mint condition, I wish I can say the same for my 1969 Dusty in Memphis sealed copy got hit with mold deposits )
and that new Robert Johnson rarity Dear Lord

Posted By: Howra Date: 05 Sep 2011 19:28:52

Nice rip! Better than Pbthals classic Record Genesis rips, for some reason they sound 'bright' by comparison. No offence Pat! :)

I can't understand all the slobbering over the SACD rips? I have the SACD boxsets and I can only bear a few of them.

This is the 3rd version of "Lamb" that I have downloaded in the past 2 days. With every version, when I get ready to burn to CD, all 3 programs I use to burn CDs gives me an error message that the file name of "The Colony of Slippermen (The Arrival - A Visit to the Doktor - Raven" is invalid. These programs are "Burrrn" "Foobar" and "Nero". Can anyone please help?
Posted By: mertin Date: 09 Sep 2011 12:54:20
@dreamweaver;
this is because that filename contains a slash: "/", (or was it "\" I don't remember) Just rename it to "-" and that's it.

Thanks aksman for this rip. I'm enjoying this album and getting into it after quite a few times during my life of trying and not succeeding. Now I'm finally getting there! Sounds good too! Although it seems theres some debate as to which is the best edition to listen to. It would seem that a real audiophile remaster hasn't been done yet on CD or vinyl (like DCC, MFSL, XRCD, Analogue Productions, etc). It would benefit from that. Not to mention the 2008 remix that is said to suffer from the loudness syndrome, although I haven't listened to it.

Cheers
