Genesis - Selling England By The Pound
Vinyl rip in 24-bit/192kHz (presented in 24/96 & 16/44.1) | FLAC | m3u, cue & Tech Log
Artwork | DR Analysis | 1.06 gb/310 mb incl. recovery | FSonic, FF & WU | Prog | 1973
Mastered from the original analog master tapes by Bernie Grundman
Classic Records 200g LP (Quiex SV-P) / Cat.#: FC 6060-200g

It's this delicate balance and how the album showcases the band's narrative force on a small scale as well as large that makes this their arguable high-water mark.
- Stephen Thomas Erlewine/AMG (5/5 Stars)

Selling England by the Pound is the fifth studio album by the progressive rock band Genesis and was recorded and released in 1973. It followed Foxtrot and was the band's commercial peak so far hitting No.3 in the UK where it remained on the charts for 21 weeks. The album went gold in the US in 1990. It was also a major breakthrough in terms of critical reception.

The album cover is a painting by Betty Swanwick called The Dream. The original painting did not feature a lawn mower; the band had Swanwick add it later as an allusion to the song "I Know What I Like."

Ripping Note

While the sound quality of this Classic Records release is very good, the pressing quality was a bit disappointing. The whole record is noisier is usual. Due to the low music level (because of playing time) and the amount of quite parts, this could be may be disturbing for those who are not used to listen to vinyl.

Highly appreciated for the best Genesis-album ever!
Yes, I'm gonna comparing this one to Your remastered LPs-Box :-)

This is very high in my Genesis faves too and on the basis that I doubt aksman wouldn't have gone to the bother if it wasn't worthy... so I'm definitely looking forward to hearing this one.

many thanks

"best Genesis-album ever" + magic words in header (aksman and Classic Records 200g LP) - must be the top-notch version. Thanks a lot!

UPD
...and after comparison I have to say that SEBTP from aksman's 6-box rip remains the best. of course that's valid for my ears and DIY speakers or Grados, so opinions may vary. But my opinion is right!

Unfortunately, recordings of Genesis, from the technical point of view, are pretty mediocre, with poor sound and painful at times.

Personally I'm looking for a good vinyl rip Foxtrot, Genesis masterpiece.

Thank you very much, aksman.

Love it, thanks for sharing this classic with us! Can't wait to listen to it, this might be my ultimate version.

Thank you. It was only recently, while ripping the Genesis SACDs, that I came across your older post of their boxset, done with audacity in those days. I thought you might like to re do them now you have out grown Audacity, but this is a different LP is it?

Your previous rip DR analysis:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So on these figures alone, which of course are limited in their scope, your new rip is quite some improvement.

This is a true masterpiece, the greatest of all progressive rock (in my humble opinion).

Thank you very much.

Hi aksman,
just listen to this rip and compare with your box version half speed mastered. For my ears, the half speed version sound more open, not so compressed like this one, although Bernie did the mastering. Thank you very much for the possibility to compare!!!
Posted By: umbilical Date: 02 Sep 2011 18:49:37
wow great, you plan post the whole set?

I never understand about this 200g genesis series, is a new mix? not the originals from original master tapes?

thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Also my favorite Genesis album, but... some of the comments above sent me looking for your boxset rip, only to find that your links are down for that rip. Any chance that you will re-up so we can compare? (and redbook versions of that boxset rip for those of us with limited bandwidth would be spectacular... but probably too much to ask)

THANKS for all your excellent work, Aksman!

@samdaman... THANKS!

Thanks to Doc Rob!
Be warned though, aksman might re-rip if he still has the set!

Thanks man. Your efforts are sensational.
Only a short while ago I listened to your box set. To me the box set sounds more brilliant and open. Highs are cleaner and mids more defined. AB comparison on Firth Of Fifth revealed the box set as the winner for me.

Thank you for this great rip. I believe the vinyl box reissues are new mixes altogether, as in from the multitrack. That would make their sound completely different and subject to an interesting comparison if this new rip is from a remaster of the original mixes.

Thank you for you great rip axman! I have one thing to ask, though. Is it just me or the left channel is a tad bit louder and brighter than the right one?

EDIT: Nevermind, I think it's just fine.

Anyway, the sound quality is just impeccable... Now may I ask, which release do you yourself prefer, this Classic release or the Nick Davis remaster?
Posted By: aksman Date: 04 Sep 2011 04:49:12
@ vlad951

If there are any differences between left and right then it must be in the groove (although I didn't noticed something here)... I never change the settings of the ADC.

Beside that, I prefer the Classic's because of the use of the original mixes. They have a better dynamic and sound more natural to me.

Great album and good quality sound, but too much crackle pops in this rip.
